"The Dueling Monkey", known as "The Power of Friendship! Barbarian #1 and Barbarian #2" in the Japanese version, is the eleventh episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime. It first aired in Japan on June 27, 2000 and in the United States on December 15, 2001.

Since Joey defeated her, Mai finds she no longer enjoys Dueling as much as she used to and vows to get revenge. When Rex Raptor challenges her, she says she will take him on, but only if he beats Joey first. Does Joey have what it takes to win his second Duel, especially since Mai has told Yugi not to coach him from the sidelines?

In this episode, Greg Abbey replaces Sam Riegel as the voice of Tristan Taylor.

Summary

The gang is still searching for Mokuba, who was taken away by Kemo following Yugi's last victory over the Impersonator of Death. Joey says that he couldn't find Mokuba anywhere, and Téa says that he must have been taken away to Pegasus Castle. Yugi says that's just another motivation for he and Joey to win ten Star Chips - he has six, and Joey has two.

Joey notices some dropped cards on the floor, which Tristan says are his. He sees that one of Tristan's cards is "Lava Battleguard", and says that it's similar to a card in his deck. He takes out his "Swamp Battleguard" and says that the two should stick together, and "offers" to take it off of Tristan's hands, to which Tristan reluctantly agrees. Téa says they should be called the Lava and Swamp Dummies. (In the dub, she says that she sees a resemblance between the cards and the "muscle-heads".)

Meanwhile, at a Duel Arena, Mai Valentine orders her "Harpie Lady Sisters" to attack with "Triangle Ecstasy Spark", winning her another Duel - but she appears rather bored while doing it. She says that Dueling has lost its thrill. As she lies on a hill, she can't seem to get Joey out of her head. Suddenly, Rex Raptor appears behind her and says that he finally found her again. He is angry for her making a fool out of him on the boat to Duelist Kingdom. Rex challenges Mai to a Duel, but Mai says she isn't interested in men she's already beaten. Rex tries to show off his five Star Chips, but Mai one-ups him by showing off her eight. Mai says she already knows who she wants to get her last two Star Chips from. Rex thinks that she's referring to Yugi, and says he'll Duel him, but Mai thinks of a plan - she tells Rex that she will Duel him, but on one condition. (In the dub, Mai reveals that she lost to Joey, and Yugi isn't mentioned.)

Meanwhile, the gang is trying to find Joey another Duel. They arrive in a meadow with lots of Duelists around, but Téa and Tristan can't help but take shots at Joey's Dueling ability, with Yugi laughing along with them. (In the dub, Téa says that Joey should try and find a 'dueling monkey' to challenge.) Joey snaps at the gang, but then gets interrupted by a shrill laugh - which can only belong to Mai. Mai takes more shots at Joey, saying that the gang is still stuck together and says that if Joey wasn't holding Yugi back, Yugi would already be at Pegasus Castle, which Yugi rebuts. Mai points to Joey, saying that he may have won last time, but her servant will win this time, as Rex walks out from behind a tree.

Despite Téa and Tristan saying there's no way he can win against a regional finalist like Rex, Joey accepts the Duel. Furthermore, Mai adds a condition - that Joey can't get any advice from the "peanut gallery". (In the dub, Mai explicitly says that Joey will be disqualified.) Joey accepts the conditions, saying he needs to use his own skills to win. Tristan tries to intervene and stop the Duel, but Joey tells him to shut up and smacks him to the ground. Joey says that Mai is right and that he's holding Yugi back, and if he can't take care of himself, it's better for him to lose now. Tristan gets back up and asks Joey what will happen to Serenity if he loses, which causes Joey to stand in silence. Téa tries to defuse the situation, but Tristan storms off and says that he's done cheering for "this idiot". Joey reiterates that he's accepting the Duel, and tells Yugi not to give him any advice.

Joey and Rex enter a Duel Arena. Mai tells Rex not to forget that if he loses, he won't get "the prize". Joey asks what that is, and Rex says it's a secret, causing Joey to flare up with anger. (In the dub, Joey instead flares up because Rex makes a "dueling monkey" joke.) Joey wagers both of his remaining Star Chips, which Rex matches. Rex says the field they'll play on is part Grassland and part Wasteland. Joey thinks that Rex's dinosaurs are strong, but if he plays his "Time Wizard" and "Baby Dragon" combo, he'll be able to beat them with his super-powerful dragon. Yugi runs off to go find Tristan.

The Duel begins, and Joey is delighted to see that both "Baby Dragon" and "Time Wizard" are in his opening hand. He Summons "Baby Dragon" in Defense Position. He thinks that no matter what monster Rex plays, his special combo will be able to beat it on the next turn. Rex is unamused, and Summons his "Two-Headed King Rex" in Attack Position, which stomps on "Baby Dragon" and destroys it. Rex says that only a fool would show their monster in Defense Position. (In the dub, Rex says that even three-year-olds know not to defend on their first move.) Mai comments from the sidelines that now Joey's plan is ruined.

Joey thinks that Rex's dinosaur is strong, but he has strong cards in his hand too. He Summons "Leogun" and uses it to attack "King Rex". However, Rex laughs and says that Joey has forgotten that "King Rex" gains a Field Power Bonus from the Wasteland field it was played on, giving it a massive ATK of 2080. "King Rex" uses "Dinosaur Foot Stomp" on "Leogun" and destroys it, dropping Joey's Life Points to 1670.

Joey decides to use his own field's Field Power Bonus for himself. The Grassland field benefits Joey's Warrior and Beast-Warrior monsters, so he Summons "Axe Raider", which is powered up by the Grassland, giving it an ATK of 2210. "Axe Raider" attacks with "Gale Slice" and destroys "King Rex", reducing Rex's Life Points to 1870. Rex responds with "Sword Arm of Dragon", with a field-boosted ATK of 2275. It attacks and destroys "Axe Raider" with "Dragon Tail Sword", and Joey is once again out of monsters as his Life Points fall to 1605. Téa tells Joey to pull himself together, but Joey can't stop thinking about Yugi.

Meanwhile, Tristan is washing his face in a lake. Yugi catches up with him, and Tristan scolds him for not helping Joey. Yugi says that it wouldn't be fair to Joey to help him in a Duel he's determined to win on his own. Yugi says that watching him until the end will prove Tristan's friendship with Joey.

Back at the Duel Arena, Joey is still trying to shake off his dependence on Yugi and focus on the Duel. He thinks that he doesn't have any monsters that can stand up to Rex's Dinosaurs, but stops when he gets to "Time Wizard". He thinks that other than creating "Thousand Dragon", he doesn't know how it works. He Sets it face-down in his Spell & Trap Zone. Mai recognizes it and warns Rex about it, but Rex says that without Yugi's help, Joey probably doesn't even know how to use it. (In the dub, Joey explicitly says his card is "Time Wizard" as he Sets it.) Joey Sets a monster, but Rex Summons "Megazowler" and has it use its charge attack to destroy Joey's Set "Rock Ogre Grotto".

Rex tells Joey to give up, but Joey Summons his "Flame Swordsman" in Attack Position, which gains a Field Power Bonus and powers up to 2340 ATK, identical to "Megazowler". Rex orders "Megazowler" to attack "Flame Swordsman", going for a Double KO, but Mai calls him a fool as "Flame Swordsman" counterattacks and destroys "Megazowler" with "Flaming Sword of Battle". Rex's Life Points drop to 1330. Mai comments that since FIRE monsters are strong against dinosaurs, Rex's monster lost its Field Power Bonus and was destroyed. Rex, now on the back foot, switches "Sword Arm" to Defense Position, but "Flame Swordsman" destroys it with a quick slash. "Flame Swordsman" continues to destroy more of Rex's dinosaurs, and Téa thinks Joey might win. Joey says that things are finally going his way and Summons "Swamp Battleguard" in Attack Position, which powers up to 2340 ATK.

Rex says not to underestimate his deck, which still contains several rare cards. He Summons one of them right then - "Serpent Night Dragon", which has an ATK of 2350 even without a Field Power Bonus. Rex says that this rare card was only given to finalists at the Japanese National Duel Monsters Championship, and that Joey can never hope to own one. He orders "Serpent Night Dragon" to attack "Flame Swordsman" with "Nightmare Shadow Sonic". "Flame Swordsman" is destroyed and Joey's momentum has been wiped out.

Joey draws "Lava Battleguard", the card that Tristan loaned him. He flashes back to when he was surrounded by a gang, trying to protect a small child. The gang says they'll teach him a lesson, when suddenly Tristan intervenes and saves him, and together they beat the gang despite being outnumbered. Despite this, Joey was angry at Tristan, saying that he could have beaten them by himself, and that he doesn't need to be babied. He reminisces that whenever Joey got into trouble, Tristan was always by his side. Suddenly, Tristan calls out to Joey, telling him to pull himself together - he and Yugi have returned.

Joey Summons "Lava Battleguard" and declares that he and Tristan will fight together. Rex says it's pointless, and orders "Serpent Night Dragon" to attack "Swamp Battleguard". However, the attack is reflected back onto "Serpent Night Dragon", destroying it. When the smoke clears, it's revealed that "Lava Battleguard" held out its club to block the attack. Yugi comments that when "Swamp Battleguard" and "Lava Battleguard" are together, their abilities power each other up. Rex's Life Points fall to 840, and Joey resolves to keep going and fight together with Tristan. Rex smirks and thinks that they should celebrate while they can, for an even more powerful monster lurks in his deck.
