SummaryEdit

The gang has just heard a shrill scream that echoes throughout the forest. Inside a Duel Arena, Mai Valentine's three Harpie Lady Sisters have just been destroyed all at once, which drops her Life Points from 800 to 0, losing her the Duel. She looks over at her opponent's field, which is shrouded in darkness. As it fades away, her opponent tells her that rules are rules, and that Mai must hand over all her Star Chips as she has now been eliminated.

The gang rushes to the Duel Arena and asks if Mai is okay. Mai tells the gang to be careful, as her opponent is an Eliminator that roams the island and takes Star Chips from Duelists. The Eliminator holds up Mai's empty Dueling Gauntlet and says that he will eliminate Yugi, just like he did to Mai. Téa is in disbelief that Mai is really eliminated, but Mai confirms it and says that now her dream of Dueling Yugi will never come true. The Eliminator pushes Mai away, which causes Joey's temper to flare up. He attempts to rush the Eliminator, but Tristan and Bakura hold him back while Mai says it is no use. Yugi says that violence is not the answer here and asks Joey to let him handle it. Yugi steps forward and transforms into Yami Yugi, promising that he will defeat the Eliminator and get Mai's Star Chips back. (In the dub, Yugi instead dares the Eliminator to try his intimidation tactics on him instead.)

Yugi and the Eliminator enter the Duel Arena, with Joey telling Yugi the Eliminator's name: PaniK. PaniK reveals that the Eliminators, under Industrial Illusions' orders, are hunting Duelists all over the island, and that defeating Yugi is their highest priority. (In the dub, he says there is a bounty on Yugi's head and wonders if he would get extra cash for inflicting bodily harm.) Yugi says that he knew something was up when Kaiba's impersonator appeared. He says that he will not lose, and that he will defeat Pegasus. PaniK says that Yugi will never be able to beat him when he has the shadows on his side. Mai cries to Yugi to be careful, and PaniK says that just because it is night does not mean Duelists can rest—if they let their guard down, the shadows will attack mercilessly. Yugi rebuts this by saying that only cowards and thieves attack in the dark, and that he will show PaniK what happens when a Duelist's honor is harmed.

Yugi says that he will wager all six of his Star Chips on the Duel. PaniK says that although he took eight Star Chips from Mai, Yugi's wager does not matter—he will make up for the rest with this. He clicks a button on his side of the Duel Arena, which causes shackles to appear and capture Yugi's legs, alongside flamethrowers that blast fire near Yugi. The gang scream out, as Yugi just barely avoids the flames. PaniK says that when Yugi loses, flames will attack him from Hell. PaniK turns off the flamethrowers and tells Yugi that although his aim was slightly off, he can destroy Yugi anytime he wishes. The gang all yell out for Yugi to not accept PaniK's terms, but Yugi accepts, saying that he will defeat PaniK and fix his twisted heart. (In the dub, Yugi taunts PaniK, and his acceptance of the Duel is a given, considering that he's shackled in place.) Mai whispers that Yugi needs to forget about her and fight with his own Duelist's honor.

The Duel begins. PaniK goes first and Summons "Castle of Dark Illusions" in Defense Position, which gains a Field Power Bonus from the night, giving it a very high DEF of 2509. Suddenly, shadows start emanating out from the "Castle", which enshroud PaniK and his entire field. PaniK's field on Yugi's monitor also turns pitch-dark, preventing Yugi from seeing his cards or his monsters. Mai tells Yugi to be careful, as the shadows also defeated her Harpies. From the darkness, PaniK tells Yugi that no Field Power Sources work at night, except for the night itself.

Yugi decides to play it safe, Summoning "Celtic Guardian" in Defense Position. Panik Summons a monster and declares an attack, but Yugi is not able to see it. The monster's eyes glow red in the shadows and PaniK declares "Dark Grasp of Fury" ("Dark Absolute" in Japanese). "Celtic Guardian" is engulfed in shadows, dragged in and destroyed. Yugi thinks that the only way to get rid of the shadows is to destroy "Castle of Dark Illusions", but due to its massive DEF stat, it will be tough to knock down.

Yugi Summons another defensive monster, "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress". PaniK says he will not attack this turn, but he does Summon another monster in the shadows, which appears through its glowing purple eyes. Yugi realizes that he will not be able to win the Duel by staying defensive, so he decides to take action. He orders "Winged Dragon" to take flight and use its "Fireball Stone" to attack the darkness itself. For a brief moment, both of PaniK's monsters are illuminated, although the shadows re-emerge when the fireball fizzles out. PaniK orders his monster to attack with "Dark Grasp of Fury" ("Dark Absolute" in Japanese), which results in "Winged Dragon" being engulfed by the darkness and destroyed. Yugi's Life Points drop to 1606.

Yugi calls PaniK a coward who cannot do anything unless he is hiding in the shadows, which prompts PaniK to activate his flamethrowers again, which nearly misses Yugi. Yugi tells PaniK that his twisted heart made him realize how to win, and how in the morning, the sun always comes up and the shadows disappear. (In the dub, PaniK continues to taunt Yugi, referring to himself as the boogeyman and Yugi as helpless. Yugi claps back by saying that his fear only has power until people realize the dark is nothing to be afraid of.) Yugi says that he has found a way to defeat the shadows, and holds a card out from his hand. He says that PaniK has five turns left. PaniK tries to call Yugi's bluff, saying he is backed into a corner, but Yugi says that no Duelist accepts defeat just because their opponent declared victory. He reveals his trump card—"Swords of Revealing Light". He says that when he plays it, the sacred swords will dispel the shadows and stop PaniK's attacks for three turns. PaniK thinks that cannot be, and such a weak card could not possibly destroy his shadows.

On Yugi's turn, he Summons "Curse of Dragon" in Defense Position, then Sets a card face down and ends his turn. (In the dub, he refers to his card as "the card that will make you see the light".) Yugi declares that PaniK's five turns have started now. PaniK thinks that Yugi's Set card must be the "Swords". Téa asks Mai if it was really okay for Yugi to reveal his card like that, and Mai thinks about how Yugi is battling PaniK with a weapon other than cards—his words. Mai says that Yugi's words will be able to reach PaniK through the shadows, even if his monster attacks cannot. (In the dub, Mai thinks that the shadows have gotten to Yugi, and he's panicking. Bakura comments that Yugi would never leave his trump card exposed unless he is nervous.)

PaniK draws a card to start his turn and starts laughing. He says he has never met a Duelist foolish enough to reveal his own card. He Summons "Reaper of the Cards", whose effect allows it to destroy any Spell Cards that are Set on the field. He orders the "Reaper" to destroy Yugi's Set card with "Call of the Graveyard" ("Card Eraser" in Japanese). However, when the scythe of the "Reaper" reaches Yugi's Set card, it suddenly stops. PaniK's monitor displays a "WARNING" as Yugi chuckles. Yugi reveals that although he said that "Swords of Revealing Light" was his trump card, he never said it was the card he played. He reveals his Set card—"Spellbinding Circle"—which ensnares the "Reaper" since it was the one who attacked the card. The "Reaper" is immobilized far away from PaniK's shadows. Yugi says that anyone who plays Duel Monsters must be wary of the "Reaper", and figured that PaniK had one in his deck, but with the "Reaper" taken care of, he's free to lay whatever Spells he wants on the field.

Yugi declares that PaniK wasted his turn. He declares that he is Setting his trump card now, and plays "Swords of Revealing Light" face-down. He also sets another Spell, and the gang wonders as to this new card's identity. The episode ends with a zoom-out shot of the Duel Arena. (In the dub, PaniK instead says that the "Reaper" was just one of his powerful monsters, and the ones that remain will destroy Yugi, showing a preview of "King of Yamimakai" charging an attack.)

Differences in adaptationsEdit

  • The picture on "Chaos Shield" is changed a bit in the dub.
  • A musical montage of the Duel is used to bridge the two episodes together, showing part of the Duel but not its entirety.
  • Cut from the beginning: a flashback of Mai standing on the beach, saying to herself that it is not her style to think of the past, then being grabbed by the Player Killer.
  • The reflection of PaniK in Mai's eyes is added to the US version.
  • In the dub, the episode ends with PaniK telling Yugi that he is going to win the Duel, showing a preview of "King of Yamimakai" charging an attack. In the Japanese version, it ends with Mai watching the Duel, PaniK scowling, Yami smiling and a long shot of the Duel.

MistakesEdit

QuotesEdit

Yami: (smiles) I see how you work, PaniK — sneaking up on unsuspecting Duelists because you haven't the courage to challenge them face to face.
PaniK: (angrily) Watch your mouth, you insolent cur!
Yami: (his smile changes to a frown) True Duelists fight with honor and respect — not the underhanded tactics of a poacher.
