So Close Yet So Far, entitled The Darkness of the Kaiba Family in the Japanese version, is the 119th episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! television series.

The Duel between Yugi Muto and Noah Kaiba comes to a close, with Yugi the victor—but their troubles are far from over, as the gang must now contend with the true mastermind behind all their ordeals in the Virtual World: Gozaburo Kaiba.

Synopsis

With the 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons having launched their triple Direct attack, Yugi wins his Duel against Noah, enabling him to free Seto, Mokuba and the rest of the gang from stone. Noah realizes that he'd lost because Yugi had the same thing Seto had: the courage to never give up, even when the situation seemed hopeless.

Left alone in the Virtual World for 6 years after his accident, Noah feels that his father, Gozaburo, forgot him upon Seto's arrival into the Kaiba family. Because of this, he blames his stepbrother for robbing him of his birthright and intends to take revenge by escaping to the real world. He targets Yugi and tries to possess him by force, but gets the shock of his life when he discovers that not one, but two souls inhabit Yugi's body. The "other Yugi" forces Noah to back out, but not before he discovers that their minds have also been digitized into this virtual prison.

Moments later, Gozaburo Kaiba reveals his own virtual self to Noah and the gang and explains the story behind Seto's adoption: Initially, Seto was to become a replacement body for Noah's digitized mind, but Gozaburo later determined that, even though Noah would have a body, his son would never truly grow up and always remain a child in spirit. As such, Gozaburo turned his attention toward training Seto into inheriting KaibaCorp—except he felt that his stepson had stolen the company, which led to his (Gozaburo's) demise.

But now, Gozaburo has a new plan: to destroy the entire real world and trap everyone's mind in Virtual Reality (using an idea that he says Noah originally thought of); in doing so, Gozaburo says, the population of Earth would essentially become immortal. Noah realizes that he and the Big Five were being used by his father all along and offers to help free Yugi, Kaiba and the gang from the Virtual World.

But after all this time, can Noah truly be trusted?

Featured Duel: Yami Yugi vs. Noah Kaiba

Duel continues from previous episode.

Turn 41: Yami Yugi
Yugi just attacked Noah directly with his 3 Blue-Eyes White Dragons. (Noah: 8300 → 5300 → 2300 → 0 Life Points). Yugi wins.

Differences in adaptations

  • In the original version Noah didn't know that Gozaburo digitized his mind into the virtual world while in the English version, he knew.
  • In the original version Gozaburo said that the missile satellite that was in space was actually from the secret underwater base, while in the English version he said that the satellite was one of many things he made when he was in charge of KaibaCorp.
  • In the original version Gozaburo said that he would use the missiles of the satellite to blow up the world, while in the English version he planned to digitize the entire planet with the satellite.

Epilogue

  • Yugi's friends (Joey, Tristan, Téa, Serenity, Duke, Seto and Mokuba) leave their statue form and are returned to normal.
  • Noah is distraught from losing the Duel and tries to merge with Yugi in order to steal his body. As he does so, he sees images from Yugi's mind including the Spirit of the Millenium Puzzle. Yami stops Noah from taking over Yugi's body.
  • Noah's biological father (and the adoptive father of Seto and Mokuba), Gozaburo Kaiba makes an appearance. He reveals that his body is dead but his mind has been transferred to a computer (just like Noah) and that he is, in fact, the mastermind of the capture of Seto Kaiba and everyone else.
