One Step Ahead - Part 1, entitled Kaiba's Intrusion! The Grand Prix Final in the Japanese version, is the 194th episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! television series.

The long-awaited Finals.

FINAL Duel
Sieg Lloyd vs. Leon Wilson

Kaiba's arrival.

  • Suddenly, Kaiba, sporting his Battle City clothing, comes there with a chopper and lands in the Duel Stage, carrying his usual suitcase. Sieg smiles and assumes he's finally unraveled the enigma.
Seto Kaiba: "This is as far as it comes! As the organizer of this competition, I announce a cancellation!"
  • The crowd moans in disappointment and Yuugi's group (Mokuba included) are puzzled. Leon wonders aloud what's going on.
Seto Kaiba: "And, also, Leon Wilson is declared automatic winner and will be allowed to confront the current KC Grand Prix King!"
  • Things don't seem to become clear for anyone.
Sieg Lloyd: "Would please explain what's going on? Mr. Kaiba?"
Seto Kaiba: "There's no need for explanations. You lowlife are the one who knows it better than anyone else in here. Sieg Lloyd... No... Siegfried von Schroider!"
  • Yuugi seems to recognize the name, so he asks his grandpa. It'd seem Kaiba means that he's linked to the Nº1 amusement world company in Europe with powerful international influences, the Schroider group. Anzu grasps that it's Kaiba Corporation's rival company.
Seto Kaiba: "Hmpf. The leader of the Schroider group has even used an alias to participate in the competition held by my Kaiba Corporation. And the one behind the destructive incidents... I've seen through everything. But it's taken me a while to confirm it. However! The fact that you lowlife, Siegfried, have been using a fake name, is undeniable! There are enough reasons to kick you lowlife from this competition!"
  • Siegfried laughs at it. He then goes on saying that he didn't expect Kaiba to be such a straight person. He claims that Kaiba must be afraid of him winning over Yuugi. He then reminds him that their dialogue is being emitted live throughout the world. He's afraid of him, so that's why he's kicking him out. However, Kaiba merely smiles.
Seto Kaiba: "Heh. What are you lowlife misunderstanding? No - one said you were going to be expelled."
Sieg Lloyd: "Huh?"
Seto Kaiba: "I'll personally show you how feeble your power is!"
  • The crowd erupts in excitement: Kaiba is going to Duel Siegfried! Siegfried looks amused while Kaiba claims that it must've been Siegfried's goal from the very start. Kaiba decides to use a Duel Disk just in case. As per rule, they both Shuffle each other's Decks and then make a Coin Toss to decide the order. Siegfried wins it and comments that he's favored by fate. Kaiba in unmoved and growls at the phrase, so Siegfried decides to go second instead.
  • For the steps in the Duel, see Featured Duel#1 below.

Tug-of-war.

  • Leon sits down next to Yuugi & co. Siegfried thinks that he'll bury Kaiba Corporation forever thanks to the fact that this Duel is being emitted worldwide. Kaiba thinks that he won't let him do as he likes. Kaiba starts in a simple manner. When Siegfried's Turn comes, he smiles.
Siegfried von Schroider: "Kaiba. Fate's prologue may not start in a silent manner. Sometimes, it may bring a storm along with it.
Seto Kaiba: "I'm about to throw up from such simple and cold words! Hurry it up and keep with the Duel!" (sarcasm.)
Siegfried von Schroider: "Obviously. My precious little girls are waiting in the Valhalla to get rid of you. I, from my Hand, Engage a Magic Card: "Walkuren ritt"! I can Special Summon all of the Valkyrie Monsters in my Hand!"
Seto Kaiba: "What!?"
  • Sieg manages to bring out 3 Valkyries into the Field and smugly announces that "the final has come before the prelude played". Kaiba survives by forcing the Battle Phase over. However, Sieg plays a Quick-Play Spell Card: "Mischief of the Time Goddess". A discussion over its exacts Effects is explained in the #Notes section below.
  • Kaiba copies its Effect and soon brings out a powerful Monster: "XYZ Head Dragon Cannon" and finds a way to compensate for the cost of his "Dimension Fusion" Card by using a Card which makes him regain LP every time a Monster is removed from the Duel.

"It's to be expected of Kaiba!"

  • When Honda comments aloud upon the good move and claims that "it's to be expected of Kaiba", Siegfried seems to react.
    • He suddenly recalls entering a room with journalists and carrying a suitcase: however, he was too late. Kaiba was there, shaking hands with Pegasus to firm a deal to develop the "Solid Vision" system. He falls to his knees and his suitcase opens, revealing schematics for what look like the "Battle Boxes" used in the Manga. He mutters about being one step too late.
  • Siegfried remains calm and begins his "Nibelung Ring's" combo. He also Summons a Monster which is able to Attack Kaiba directly by halving its ATK. It'd seem Kaiba is getting into one tight spot. He even Destroys Kaiba's Soul Absorption" Card, thus ruining his LP recovery strategy. And as long as his new Monster is in Play, he can keep on using a Direct Attack. The "curse of the Valkyries" has barely started, according to Siegfried.

Notes

"Mischief of the Time Goddess":

  • Seto however, counters Siegfried's second Attack by Activating Trap Card "Magical Trick Mirror": he selects "Mischief of the Time Goddess" in Siegfried's Graveyard and Activates it. It somehow permits Seto to stop Siegfried's current Attack dead in its tracks, and go directly to his next Turn (which Phase is unclear, at least initially).
  • The exact effects of "Mischief of the Time Goddess", as well as the subtleties of its application, aren't fully explained:
    • In the English Dub, Zigfried quotes: "Mischief of the Time Goddess" allows me to skip your turn, then I can pick off where I left off (...)".
    • In the original Japanese, Siegfried reads the exact text of the card instead: "Skip 1 Turn. My Turn to Battle Phase".
    • It is believed the card's text should be something along the lines of: "Immediately End current Turn: its remaining Phases, including the End Phase, are Skipped. Go directly to the Battle Phase of your next Turn". A full discussion on how this conclusion was reached can be found in the "Mischief of the Time Goddess" DISCUSSION Page.
