* At the entrance, [[Téa Gardner|Téa]] asks why they have to rush into things: after all this might be the last time they get to see the Pharaoh. * At the entrance, [[Téa Gardner|Téa]] asks why they have to rush into things: after all this might be the last time they get to see the Pharaoh. Ishizu replies that this battled must be carried out when both Duelists are at top physical and mental condition. Also, the set of recent events have made it possible.

* Inside the Temple and in front of the Tablet of the Realm of the Dead, Ishizu explains what will happen next by reading the text engraved on the Tablet.

The Last Duel of Fate is Episode 221 of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime.

This episode marks the beginning of the final Duel between Yugi Muto and the Pharaoh Atem to determine the Pharaoh's fate. If Yugi wins, the Pharaoh will be able to return to the Realm of the Dead; otherwise, Atem must remain in the living world.

Summary

(NOTE: for steps in the Pharaoh Atem and Yugi Muto Duel please see the Featured Duel section below)

Arrival at the Temple of the Realm of the Dead

  • Ishizu Ishtar has taken Yugi & the Pharaoh (along with all their friends) to the Temple of the Realm of the Dead, its final resting place.
  • At the entrance, Téa asks why they have to rush into things: after all this might be the last time they get to see the Pharaoh. Ishizu replies that this battled must be carried out when both Duelists are at top physical and mental condition. Also, the set of recent events have made it possible.
  • Inside the Temple and in front of the Tablet of the Realm of the Dead, Ishizu explains what will happen next by reading the text engraved on the Tablet.
'Ishizu Ishtar: "Set the 7 ancient treasures in the Tablet of Memories. Announce the name of the Pharaoh. Thus, the door of the Realm of the Dead shall open and allow the Pharaoh's soul to be greeted. However, the Eye of Wdjat will distinguish the truth. It shall determine the existence of the one who stole the Pharaoh's sword and defeated him... If you accept the Ritual of Battle, then set the 7 Millennium Items into the tablet.".
Solomon Muto: (thinking) "If you think about it, ever since Yuugi solved the disassembled Puzzle, all began to transcend..."
Yugi Muto: "Back then... I did... I did wish for friends." (thinking) "This Millennium Puzzle realized that wish. Thank you, Millennium Puzzle."
  • After placing the final item, the Eye of Widjat lights up and separates Pharaoh Atem and Yugi from one another (they both wear the same clothes as the original Yugi, and they both seem to be equal in height; later in Duel however it is obvious Atem is slightly taller than Yugi).
Mokuba Kaiba: "I don't know... just which one of them should I cheer for..."
Téa Gardner: (thinking) "If Atem wins, he can keep on being one of our companions along with us like he'd always been."
Joey Wheeler: "I'm gonna cheer for Yuugi! Even if it's for the sake of sending Atem to the Realm of the Dead...!"
Téa Gardner: (thinking) "That's right... I understand it. It's cruel, but... We must free Atem's soul... That's why I'm going to cheer for Yuugi, too..."
Pharaoh Atem: (thinking) "Aibou. You did a noble thing by accepting this battle. You have my thanks. But,I, as a Duelist... I'll defeat all who stand before my eyes with all of my power. That's my pride!"
Yugi Muto: (thinking) "My other me... If I'm not strong enough, then you won't ever be freed from inside of my heart. That's why... I'll defeat you!"
Seto Kaiba: (thinking) "The ultimate battle with the title of 'Duel King' at stake is now beginning..."

Enter "Giant God Soldier of Obelisk"

Joey Wheeler: "Yuugi!"
Tristan Taylor: "Yuugi! Hang in there!'""
Joey Wheeler: "Don't give up!"
Téa Gardner: "Yuugi...!"
Duke Devlin: "But since a superior God has been Summoned and Yuugi - kun's Monsters can't attack because of "Swords of Sealing Light"!"
Pharaoh Atem: (to Yugi) "Aibou. What's wrong? Is that all?"
Mokuba Kaiba: "With this situation... he can still stand up?"
Solomon Muto: "No. It's more like Yuugi has no other resources left, I'd say."
Duke Devlin: "Then, why...?"
Ryo Bakura: "Maybe... Yuugi - kun doesn't want to split up with Atem - kun..."
Joey Wheeler: "Don't say nonsense! He ain't the kind of Duelist who's gonna start smiling when he's about to lose!"
Téa Gardner: "Jounouchi..."
Joey Wheeler: "He's enjoying it! He's so excited at being able to fight the other Yuugi and that's why he looks animated! It's the first time he's reaching towards the other Yuugi... Both of their honesty flowing between their hearts... That guy was always hidden behind the back, but he's now facing him face-to-face, ain't he!"
Téa Gardner: "Always behind the back..."
Joey Wheeler: (thinking) "Yuugi! Show it to me! Show me your strongness!"
  • The Duel resumes.
