The Story which concludes within the Light is Episode 224th of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime.

Yugi's Final Attack

• During the Duel, Yugi's "Gold Sarcophagus" Negates the return of Atem's "Osiris the Sky Dragon": the Card Yugi had placed Face-Down inside the Sarcophagus was exactly the Card Atem just Activated to resurrect Osiris: "Monster Reborn".

Mokuba Kaiba: "Osiris has... been annihilated...!"

Joey Wheeler: "... "Monster Reborn"... For Yuugi, that's a very important Card... "

Tristan Taylor: "But, of his own volition, he chose to seal it..."

Ishizu Ishtaer: (thinking): "This is a message from Yuugi to the other Yuugi... The souls of the Dead ought not to wander in the living world. It it his requiem to the Pharaoh, who has to return to the Realm of the Dead... Used with a strong determination, it is Yuugi's key Card."

Pharaoh Atem: (thinking): "Aibou has read my key Card... He's... overtaken me."

Duke Devlin: "Atem - kun doesn't a have a Defensive Monster..."

Ryo Bakura: "If Silent Magician were to launch a Direct Attack, then... The outcome will be decided."

Téa Gardner: "Yuugi... "

Pharaoh Atem: (thinking): "Well then... Come at me! Aibou!"

Yugi Muto: "Silent Magician... launches a Direct Attack on the Player...!"

• Duel resumes.

Farewell Pharaoh Atem

• In his final move of the Duel, Yugi uses "Silent Magician" to attack Atem directly and wins. Yugi falls to his knees in tears.

Yugi (right) bursts into tears after his victory. Pharaoh Atem consoles him

.

Pharaoh Atem: "I've lost... Aibou. Stand up. What would a winner do by standing on his knees. If I were you, I wouldn't show any tears."

Yugi Muto: "I-I'm a coward...! For me... You're always my goal... I wanted to become as strong as you...!"

Pharaoh Atem: "You're not a coward! Don't you hold the strongness from never losing to anyone? The tenderness of strongness? I learnt that from you... Aibou! Your courage made you take on the Ritual of Battle! It's set the road I must trek upon."

Yugi Muto: "My other me..."

Pharaoh Atem: "I'm not your 'other you' anymore... And you're no else but you yourself. You're named Mutou Yuugi... The only one which exists in this world!"

The Eye of Wdjat starts shining.

Tristan Taylor: "What the...!?"

Joey Wheeler: "The eye on the door is...!"

Ishizu Ishtar: "The Eye of Wdjat that guards the door to the Realm of the Dead has, through the Ritual of Battle, distinguished the truth of the Pharaoh's soul. The soul of the Pharaoh which has lingered in the living world over 3,000 years, is going to be received upon this instant. Pharaoh's soul! Announce the name of the Pharaoh to the Eye of Wdjat!"

Pharaoh Atem: "My name is Atem!"

The The Eye of Wdjat opens and reveals a door. Atem starts walking towards it.

Everyone: "Yuugi!"

Téa Gardner: "Wait up! Yuugi!'"

Tristan Taylor: "Are you really leaving!? Ain't it fine if you don't go that 'afterlife' thing!? Please don't go!"

Everyone starts crying.

Pharaoh Atem's spirit enters the Realm of the Dead and is finally laid to rest, rejoining the friends from his past

Téa Gardner: "The other Yuugi... No! Atem! Is there a place to return to inside of that light? I knew that...! I tried to understand it...! But...! That light will effectively separate you from us, won't it!? I can't see the point of it yet! As a perfect companion, you're... suddenly vanishing in front of our eyes, aren't you!? I don't get the point of it!'"

Joey Wheeler: "Anzu. It's fine if you don't get it. Because you don't, all of the stuff about him will be engraved in your head. The time you spent with that guy... Remember it! You can't forget it! That's why... Let's see him depart... He's departing towards his future!"

Pharaoh Atem: (thinking): "Everyone...!"

Téa Gardner: (thinking): "I won't forget... the things about you...'"

Joey Wheeler: "Yuugi! It's no matter if you're either the 'Pharaoh' or 'Atem'!' You're Yuugi! Even if 1,000 years pass, you'll keep on being our companion!'"

Pharaoh Atem: "Yeah!"

Yugi Muto: "I won't ever forget! The things about you...!'"

• Atem steps in, making his clothes change to those of ancient Egypt. In the other side of the portal, are his family, friends, and Priests (left to right: Karim, Shada, Isis, Mana, Shimon, Aknadin, King Aknamkanon, Priest Seto, Mahad). The doorway closes behind him.

Téa Gardner: "Yuugi...!'"

Yugi Muto: "My other... me..."

• Suddenly the ground and walls start to crumble. The Tablet of the Realm of the Dead disintegrates and the Millennium Items fall down a chasm in the ground. As the group runs to safer ground towards the exit, the spirit of Shadi watches them leave as the walls continue to crumble.

A New Adventure?

Ishizu Ishtar: "The Pharaoh's soul has been greeted, so the Millennium Items have fulfilled their duty. The Door of the Realm of the Dead shall not open twice."

Tristan Taylor: "He's left... That guy..."

Joey Wheeler: "Yeah."

The FINAL shot of the original Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. This shot and the preceding 2 minutes were cut from the English Dub

• After the credits finish rolling, there is a scene with dialogue:

Yugi Muto: "Grandpa! I'm going!"

Solomon Muto: "Alright! Be careful!"

Téa Gardner: "Yuugi! Good morning!'"

Joey Wheeler & Tristan Taylor: "Hey!'"

Yugi Muto: "Good morning! Everyone!"

• The scene continues with a Yugi voice-over:

Yugi Muto: (voice-over) "This isn't just the story of a special Pharaoh. It isn't anyone's story. That's... It's the History which concludes inside of the Light. And... My own story has just barely begun!"

Featured Duel: Pharaoh Atem vs. Yugi Muto - Part 4

Duel continues from previous episode.

Yugi Muto's Turn

• Sets a Monster.
• Switches "Curse of Dragon" to Defense Position.

Pharaoh Atem's Turn

• Activates Spell Card "Thousand Knives": it Destroys Yugi's Face-Down "Marshmallon" without triggering its Special Ability.
• Uses "Dark Magician" to Attack & Destroy Yugi's "Curse of Dragon".

Yugi Muto's Turn

• Summons "Blockman" (1000 ATK / 1500 DEF) in Defense Position.
• Sets a Card.

Pharaoh Atem's Turn

• Activates Equip Spell Card "Dark Spear" and Equips to his "Dark Magician", giving it Piercing Effect.
• Uses "Dark Magician" to Attack Yugi's "Blockman",
  • Yugi Activates Trap Card "Soul Shield": Yugi Pays half his LP (Yugi Muto: 800 → 400 Life Points) to Negate all Battle Damage and end the Battle Phase.

Yugi Muto's Turn

• Activates Spell Card "Gold Sarcophagus": Yugi selects 1 Card from his Deck and places it Face-Down. If Atem later Activates a Card of the same name, Yugi will be able to Negate its Effect.
• Activates "Blockman's" Special Ability: Yugi Tributes it to Special Summon a number of "Block Tokens" (Rock-Type/EARTH/Level 4/ATK 1000/DEF 1500) equal to the number of Turns "Blockman" has been Face-Up on his side of the Field. Since it has been two Turns, Yugi Special Summons two "Block Tokens" in Defense Position.
• Tributes his two "Block Tokens" to Summon "Gandora the Dragon of Destruction" (0 ATK / 0 DEF) and Activates its Special Ability: Yugi pays Half his LP (Yugi Muto: 400 → 200 Life Points) to Remove all Monsters on the Field from the Game. Gandora is then Destroyed. (Gandora has a slightly different Ability in the TCG/OCG).
  • Atem Activates Trap Card "Dark Illusion": it protects his "Dark Magician" and allows Yugi to Draw one Card
• Yugi Sets two Cards.

Pharaoh Atem's Turn

• Uses "Dark Magician" to Attack Yugi Directly.
  • Yugi Activates Trap Card "Magician's Circle": it allows both Players to Special Summon a Spellcaster-Type Monster with up to 2000 ATK" from their Decks in Attack Position. Yugi Special Summons "Silent Magician LV0" (1000 ATK / 1000 DEF); Atem Special Summons "Dark Magician Girl" (2000 ATK / 1700 DEF).
  • Yugi Activates Quick-Play Spell Card "Spell Textbook": since he is holding no Cards he Discards none, and then Draws 1 Card. Yugi Draws "Card of Sanctity" and immediately Activates it thanks to "Spell Textbook's" Effect: both Players Draw until they have 6 Cards in their Hand.
    • The Special Ability of Yugi's "Silent Magician LV0" Activates: its LV increases by one and its ATK by 500 for each Card Atem Draws, and since he just Drew 5 it becomes LV5 and gains 5 × 500 = 2500 ATK ("Silent Magician LV0" → "Silent Magician LV5": 1000 → 3500 ATK / 1000 DEF).
    • Atem Activates Quick-Play Spell Card "Magicians Unite" from his Hand: "Dark Magician" and "Dark Magician Girl" combine to become one single Monster with 3000 ATK, allowing Atem to survive the Battle Damage. Both of Atem's Monsters are however Destroyed (Pharaoh Atem: 700 → 200 Life Points)
• Atem Activates Spell Card "Monster Reborn" to Special Summon "Osiris the Sky Dragon" (X000 → 4000 ATK / X000 → 4000 DEF) in Attack Position.
  • Yugi's "Gold Sarcophagus" Activates: the Face-Down Card Yugi selected was "Monster Reborn". Atem's "Monster Reborn" is therefore Negated.

Yugi Muto's Turn

• Uses Silent Magician to Attack Atem Directly (Pharaoh Atem: 200 → 0 Life Points). Yugi wins.
