"God Phoenix vs Thunder Dragon" (神不死鳥ゴッドフェニックスVSバーサス雷竜サンダー・ドラゴン Goddo Fenikkusu Bāsasu Sandā Doragon) is the sixth chapter of the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG Structures manga. It was first published November 21, 2019, in the V Jump magazine.

Shoma continues his Duel against Psychic Tendo, ready to do battle with a Deck built for the World Championships.

Summary

Shoma has just Special Summoned "God Phoenix Gearfried", despite that Tendo's "Maxx "C"" is still in play. Jukyu notes to Kuroda that Shoma didn't end his turn, and therefore he wins their argument; however, Kuroda counters by asking if it was worth allowing his opponent to gain free advantage. Shoma starts his Battle Phase by attacking "Some Summer Summoner" with "Super Quantum Red Layer", destroying it, but not before Tendo can use it to revive "Thunder Dragonroar".

Shoma continues, but rather than use "God Phoenix Gearfried" to overpower "Thunder Dragon Colossus" in battle, Shoma first equips it with "Flame Noble Knight Roland" from his hand by its effect, then uses it to attack "Thunder Dragonroar" instead. Then, since it has attack, he uses its effect to equip "Thunder Dragon Colossus" onto it as an Equip Spell, circumventing its inherent ability to prevent destruction by banishing a Thunder monster from his Graveyard. This makes it less of a threat than if he had just destroyed it, but only for as long as he can keep it equipped.

The attack continues, and with his monster's "Phoenix God Blade", "Thunder Dragonroar" is destroyed. Kuroda grades the attack name as being "pretty simple", and only gives it 28 points. Tendo attempts to use his destroyed monster's effect to Special Summon another "Thunder Dragon" monster, but Shoma counters with the effect of "God Phoenix Gearfried" to send "Roland" to the Graveyard and negate that effect. Shoma is free to attack Tendo directly with "Evocator Eveque", and Tendo's LP end at 6100 this turn.

During the End Phase, Shoma uses the effect of "Roland" in his Graveyard to add another "God Phoenix Gearfried" from his Deck to his hand, and Tendo uses the effect of "Thunder Dragondark" in his hand to discard it and add another "Thunder Dragondark" from his Deck to his hand. Shoma's turn ends, and it looks as though Shoma has the advantage, with his monster's ability to negate any effect while it has an Equip Spell on it. However, as Kuroda and Tsukiko point out, the "Thunder Dragon" Deck is quite capable of using its cards from the Graveyard, so Shoma using his monster's effect would benefit Tendo more than it would hurt him. In addition, he only has the single negate, so he must be careful what effect he negates.

Tendo declares that he will go to the World Championships, and that he won't lose to someone like Shoma, and begins his turn. He swiftly tries to use the effect of "Thunder Dragondark" to gather more "Thunder Dragons", but Shoma immediately uses his monster's effect to negate that effect by sending "Thunder Dragon Colossus" to the Graveyard. However, this gives Tendo free reign to activate "Thunder Dragon Fusion", shuffling "Thunder Dragon Colossus" and two "Thunder Dragondark" from his Graveyard back to the Deck. Tendo calls out that if Shoma will Summon a "God", then he'll just have to bring out a stronger one. Tendo Fusion Summons "Thunder Dragon Titan", the ace of his Deck. Shoma notes that Tendo has four cards in his hand to support his monster's effect.

Sure enough, Tendo begins using his "Thunder Dragon" monsters' effect in his hand, and every time a Thunder monster's effect activates in his hand, "Thunder Dragon Titan" allows him to destroy any card on the field. Using his monster's "Judgment Thunder", Tendo destroys "God Phoenix Gearfried", then "Super Quantum Red Layer", then "Evocator Eveque". Jukyu is amazed that such a powerful effect can be used more than once per turn (more due to the fact that he still isn't sure what all the "Thunder Dragon" cards do). Kuroda confirms it, adding that as long as he has the right cards in his hand, he can continue indefinitely.

Tsukiko notes that, with his field completely empty now, the odds have completely turned in Tendo's favor. Shoma still has his full LP and another "God Phoenix Gearfried" in his hand, though, so as long as he can hold out for the rest of this turn, he still has a chance, as long as he can draw an Equip Spell. However, Tendo knows that one of the two cards left in Shoma's hand is that irksome "God Phoenix Gearfried", and though he doesn't know what the other one is (it's "Blazewing Butterfly"), he can't afford to allow Shoma to have the chance to Summon it. "God Phoenix Gearfried" will not be gracing the field again, Tendo declares, continuing his turn.

Faster than anyone can react, Tendo enters his Battle Phase. However, not only does he have more monsters than when he started, his monsters include another "Some Summoner Summoner" and two copies of "Thunder Dragon Titan", whose total ATK equals exactly 8000. Tendo declares checkmate and attack Shoma directly, whose LP fall to 0. Tendo is declared the winner. Shoma is silent for a moment, contemplating his defeat. However, he approaches Tendo with hand outstretched, complimenting his opponent on a fun Duel and wishing him luck on his National Qualifiers Duel tomorrow.

However, Tendo is disappointed to hear that Shoma would describe the Duel as "fun", as he was hoping for a more serious Duel from the person who beat Dark Kuroda. Tendo ignores Shoma's handshake and stalks past him, saying that if he's the sort of person who has "fun" losing, then he shouldn't bother wishing him luck. Shoma is hurt by his words, but Des, friendly part-timer, urges him to not take it personally, as Tendo is likely to be very nervous about tomorrow's Duel.

The next day, Shoma is at the Qualifiers Duel anyway, cheering Tendo on just as loudly as anyone else. Jukyu and Kuroda are there as well to support one of their fellow "Four Duel Kings", but Tsukiko doesn't care about tournaments and the like, so she stayed home today. Tendo has managed to defeat every opponent he's faced to this point, and his "Thunder Dragon" Deck has carried him here to the final match. A victory here would guarantee his spot in the World Championships. And now, the Duel has reached his climax, as his opponent only has 100 LP left while he still has 1700.

Tendo knows he just needs one more attack, just one more good attack to reach his dream of seeing the World Championships with his own eyes, to be just like "him". He reaches out, as if "he" were right there in front of him, only to have that illusion shattered by his opponent's "Knightmare Unicorn". A cruel but necessary reminder that it was his opponent's turn, and he doesn't control any monsters. "Knightmare Unicorn" attacks him directly, and Tendo's LP fall to 0, and his opponent is guaranteed a place in the World Championships.

Tendo steps off the Duel platform, where he is pulled into an embrace by Jukyu. Tendo numbly tells Jukyu to let him go, because he stinks, but Jukyu tells him that it's alright. Kuroda also approaches and puts a hand on Tendo's shoulder, and Tendo starts shaking, before crying outright. He really wanted to see the youth division of Worlds while he still had the chance, and sobs an apology to the other two that he couldn't do what they didn't get the chance to do either.

Shoma stands back and lets his friends comfort their friend on his loss, as he ponders what it must be like to Duel with only winning or losing as the focus. He's always lived for the Duel itself, not the outcome, so the Duel that Tendo was trying for is a completely different world to him.

Featured Duel

Shoma Yusa vs Psychic Tendo

Both players have 8000 LP. Tendo controls "Some Summer Summoner" (1600|↙ ↘) in the Extra Monster Zone and "Thunder Dragon Colossus" (L8|2600/2400) in Attack Position, in the center Main Monster Zone that "Some Summer Summoner" points to. Shoma controls "Super Quantum Red Layer" (L5|2000/800), "Evocator Eveque" (L4|1500/1000), and "God Phoenix Gearfried" (L9|3000/2200), all in Attack Position. It is Shoma's turn.

Turn 2: Shoma Yusa
Shoma has just Special Summoned "God Phoenix Gearfried" by its first effect. Tendo's "Maxx "C"" is still in effect, so Tendo draws a card immediately after its Special Summon.

Shoma attacks "Some Summer Summoner" with "Super Quantum Red Layer". In response to the attack declaration, Tendo activates the Quick Effect of "Some Summer Summoner" to discard a card and Special Summon a Thunder monster from his Graveyard to a zone it points to. Tendo discards "Thunder Dragon Fusion" to Special Summon "Thunder Dragonroar" (L6|2400/0) in Defense Position to the other zone "Some Summer Summoner" points to. The attack continues, and "Some Summer Summoner" is destroyed (Tendo: 8000 → 7600 LP).

Shoma attacks "Thunder Dragonroar" with "God Phoenix Gearfried". In response to his own attack declaration, Shoma activates the effect of "Flame Noble Knight Roland" in his hand, equipping it to "God Phoenix Gearfried" as an Equip Spell that increases its ATK by 500 ("God Phoenix Gearfried": 3000 → 3500 ATK). At that start of the Damage Step, Shoma activates the second effect of "God Phoenix Gearfried" to equip "Thunder Dragon Colossus" to it as another Equip Spell that increases its ATK by 500 ("God Phoenix Gearfried": 3500 → 4000 ATK). The attack continues, and "Thunder Dragonroar" is destroyed.

As it was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragonroar" to Special Summon a "Thunder Dragon" monster from his Deck in Defense Position; however, Shoma activates the third effect of "God Phoenix Gearfried", sending the "Flame Noble Knight Roland" equipped to it to the Graveyard ("God Phoenix Gearfried": 4000 → 3500 ATK) to negate the activation of Tendo's monster's effect. Shoma attacks Tendo directly with "Evocator Eveque" (Tendo: 7600 → 6100 LP).

During the End Phase, as it was sent to the Graveyard this turn, Shoma activates the effect of "Flame Noble Knight Roland" in his Graveyard to add a FIRE Warrior monster or an Equip Spell from his Deck to his hand. He chooses to add a second "God Phoenix Gearfried". Also during the End Phase, Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragondark" in his hand, discarding it to add a third "Thunder Dragondark" from his Deck to his hand.

Turn 3: Psychic Tendo
Note: Tendo's full turn is not depicted during the chapter itself; however, a page from the end of the chapter describes the full turn in detail.

Tendo activates "Allure of Darkness", allowing him to draw 2 cards, but he must then banish a DARK monster from his hand, or else send his entire hand to the Graveyard. He draws, then banishes "Thunder Dragondark" from his hand. As it was banished, Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragondark" to add a "Thunder Dragon" monster from his Deck to his hand; however, Shoma once again activates the third effect of "God Phoenix Gearfried", sending the "Thunder Dragon Colossus" equipped to it to the Graveyard ("God Phoenix Gearfried": 3500 → 3000 ATK) to negate the effect's activation.

Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragon Fusion" in his Graveyard, banishing it to add a Thunder monster from his Deck to his hand. He chooses to add a second "Thunder Dragonroar". He then activates a second "Thunder Dragon Fusion" from his hand. By shuffling "Thunder Dragon Colossus" and the two copies of "Thunder Dragondark" (3 "Thunder Dragon" monsters) from his Graveyard into his Deck, Tendo Fusion Summons "Thunder Dragon Titan" (L10|3200/3200) into the Extra Monster Zone.

Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragonroar" in his hand, discarding it to add another "Thunder Dragon" monster from his Graveyard to his hand. Since a Thunder monster's effect was activated in the hand, Tendo also chains the effect of "Thunder Dragon Titan" to destroy a card on the field. Tendo destroys Shoma's "God Phoenix Gearfried" with the effect of "Thunder Dragon Titan", then adds "Thunder Dragonhawk" from his Graveyard to his hand.

He then activates the effect of "Thunder Dragonhawk" in his hand, discarding it to Special Summon another "Thunder Dragon" monster from his Graveyard. He chains the effect of "Thunder Dragon Titan" again, destroying Shoma's "Super Quantum Red Layer", then Special Summons "Thunder Dragonroar" from his Graveyard in Attack Position. Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragon" in his hand, discarding it to add two additional copies of "Thunder Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. He chains the effect of "Thunder Dragon" again, destroying Shoma's "Evocator Eveque", then adds the two copies of "Thunder Dragon" to his hand.

Tendo Normal Summons "Thunder Dragonmatrix" (L1|0/2000). He sets "Thunder Dragon Titan" and "Thunder Dragonmatrix" (2 Thunder monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon a second "Some Summoner Summoner" to the Extra Monster Zone. As it was sent from the field to the Graveyard, Tendo activates the effect of "Thunder Dragonmatrix" to add a second "Thunder Dragonmatrix" from his Deck to his hand.

Tendo activates "Instant Fusion", paying 1000 LP (Tendo: 6100 → 5100 LP) to Fusion Summon "Kaminari Attack" to a zone that "Some Summer Summoner" points to. Tendo banishes "Thunder Dragonmatrix" in his hand and "Kaminari Attack" on his field to Special Summon a second "Thunder Dragon Titan" from his Extra Deck by its own procedure, to a zone "Some Summer Summoner" points to. As a Thunder monster activated its effect in the hand this turn, Tendo Tributes "Thunder Dragonroar" to Special Summon "Thunder Dragon Colossus" from his Extra Deck by its own procedure, to the other zone that "Some Summer Summoner" points to. He then banishes "Thunder Dragon" in his hand and "Thunder Dragon Colossus" on his field to Special Summon a third "Thunder Dragon Titan" from his Extra Deck to the other zone that "Some Summer Summoner" points to.

Tendo attacks Shoma directly with "Some Summer Summoner" and his two "Thunder Dragon Titans" (Shoma: 8000 → 6400 → 3200 → 0).

Psychic Tendo's Qualifier Duel

Tendo has 1700 LP remaining and controls no cards. His opponent has 100 LP remaining and controls "Knightmare Unicorn" (2200|← ↓ →). The Duel is shown from an unknown turn, and it is Tendo's opponent's turn.

Turn ?: Tendo's opponent
Tendo's opponent attacks Tendo directly with "Knightmare Unicorn" (Tendo: 1700 → 0 LP).
