"Once Were Friends", known as "Clash of Secret Arts!" in the Japanese version, is the forty-eighth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS anime. It first aired in Japan on May 16, 2021 and aired in Australia on January 8, 2023.

Tiger and Asana fight each other on a snowy Duel Field deep in the Maximum Mountain's mine. What could have happened to drive them apart when they used to be so close they called each other "Tialina" and "Asalina"? Their fleeting childhood memories cross. It was snowing that day too...

Summary

Pidgetrap delivers a message to Yuga, Nail and Roa.

Yuga, Nail and Roa thank the Ramen Hut Owner for the meal as they leave the Ramen Hut, Roa deciding he wants Curry Rush Ramen next time. As Yuga asks him what that's supposed to be, Pidgetrap flies towards them and perches on Yuga's shoulder with a message attached to his leg. Yuga realizes that it's from Luke, and he opens the note, which reads "Goha's Main Server is located within Maximum Mountain", information that shocks Nail. Yuga further explains that Goha 66 were trying to get their hands on it to stage a coup d'état and Pidgetrap chirps in agreement, but Nail is still floored by the news that the server is in Maximum Mountain and Roa teases Nail over not knowing where it was. Nail admits that even an executive like him wasn't informed of its location, as it's the main server containing all Dueling information, including the data on Rush Dueling, and Roa looks up at the Goha Enterprises Main Office, musing that it's something that would give one great power if they were to obtain it.

Asana admits that she is fated to fight Tiger.

At Maximum Mountain, Luke triumphantly repeats his statement that Goha's main server is buried here as he holds up Kaizo, much to Tiger's shock. Luke in turn is shocked to see his older sister here and he hugs Gavin's leg in fear as Gavin, Romin, Saburamen, Sushiko and Briscoe all sweatdrop. Tiger walks past the Heavy Cavalry Duel Club to stand by Asana as Asana realizes that Luke is Tiger's younger brother and she giggles behind her hand as Tiger grumpily reminds her of her nickname. Asana admits that she knew Luke as Lucidien, and Romin, Gavin and Saburamen sweatdrop, admitting that it's still Lucidien now but Asana didn't realize until now. The man from Goha 66 bursts out of his collapsed fellows, uncaring if they were exposed and explaining that they were going to take over the main server while everyone was busy with the Goha Rush Duel Team Battle Royal. Luke declares that they need to find that server now, but the man from Goha 66 insists that the server is theirs, although Tiger tells them both not to do as they please, calling them an annoying old man and annoying mira-brogias and yelling them into the wall as Romin and Gavin sweatdrop. Tiger insists that their fight isn't over yet and Asana agrees that Harruchi is right (once again prompting Tiger to demand she use her nickname), explaining that Tiger is her rival who she has been destined to fight when their paths crossed again. As sparks crackle between the two girls, Schubel (sans Pidgetrap) discreetly sidles up to Caterpillio and Galian and he asks if he knew about this. Galian explains to them that Asana and Tiger are like this because of an incident on a snowy day, but Tiger yells them into the wall for whispering amongst themselves, prompting Asana, Romin, Gavin, Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko to sweatdrop again (while Luke is still embedded in the wall himself). Tiger asks them to raise their hands if anyone else wants to interrupt, and Gavin, Romin, Saburamen, Briscoe and Sushiko promptly clam up. Tiger and Asana take up positions on two platforms of stone and Tiger plants her bassoon in the ground and straps on her Duel Disk, telling Asana to prepare herself, while Asana declares that her preparations are complete and leaps into the air as she calls R6 v2, which bursts through the wall, Gavin and Romin gasping in shock as Luke hides behind Gavin. Asana stands proudly atop the refurbished R6 and both girls insert their Decks into their Duel Disks, calling "Rush Duel!" and deploying the blade of Tiger's Duel Disk and R6's Solid Vision projectors as the green holographic dome rises around them.

Tiger declares her turn and draws "Ensembullfighter the Music Fiend", which she adds to her hand containing "Clubinet the Music Princess", "Brassaxophone the Music Princess", "Defensive Breath", and "Music Princess Art - Triplet". She Summons "Clubinet the Music Princess" and "Brassaxophone the Music Princess", and then she Tributes them to Tribute Summon, chanting "Right now, and as always, my oxygen and those kinds of things are steadily carried by my hemoglobins! Even if you tell me to stop, it's way too late! I will only say it once. Feel it with your fighting spirit! My very breath! Ensembullfighter the Music Fiend!" With "Emsemble Fighter" out, Tiger Sets two cards and she ends her turn.

Asana declares her turn and draws "Constructor Wyrm Buildragon", adding it to her hand containing "Constructor Soldier Drillzard", "Constructor Warrior Shovelon", "Constructor Resurrection", and "Constructor Art - Buildestruction". She Summons "Constructor Soldier Drillzard" and "Constructor Warrior Shovelon", then she Tributes them to Tribute Summon, chanting "No path lies before you. As you press on, a path is built behind you! Continue on into eternity, o infinite track! Constructor Wyrm Buildragon, engage!" Setting two cards, Asana attacks "Ensembullfighter" with "Buildragon" but Tiger sends the top two cards of her Deck ("Trumpetonfa the Music Princess" and "Nuncharinet the Music Princess") to her Graveyard to activate her Trap Card, "Defensive Breath", and as Asana gasps "What?!" Tiger explains that it changes "Ensembullfighter" to Defense Position and increases its DEF by 300, to 2500. "Buildragon" swings its tail club, but it bounces harmlessly off "Ensembullfighter" as Gavin explains that if an attacking monster's ATK is equal to the defending monster's DEF, neither will be destroyed (while Luke continues to freak out beside them), and Romin clarifies that he means that the battle was a draw. Asana ends her turn, returning the DEF of "Ensembullfighter" to normal.

"Ensembullfighter" detects Asana's Traps.

Tiger declares her turn and draws five cards; "Horn Knives the Music Princess", "Digisoon the Music Fiend", "Music Princess's Whirling Wind", "Straight Pierce", and "One-Side Reverse". She changes "Ensembullfighter" back into Attack Position, then she Summons "Horn Knives the Music Princess" and activates its effect, sending the top card of her Deck to the Graveyard, and if she sent a Warrior monster she can add a Normal Monster from her Graveyard to her hand. Sending "Flutomahawk the Music Princess" to her Graveyard, she immediately adds it back to her hand and then Summons it. Then Tiger Tributes "Flutomahawk" and "Horn Knives" to Tribute Summon, chanting "The long, middle fingered older brother, standoffish with his pinky, adrenaline in his sprained finger. With a swelling breath, he proposes to the thumb princess! Come forth! Digisoon the Music Fiend!" Next Tiger activates the Spell Card "Music Princess's Whirling Wind", changing "Buildragon" into Defense Position, and she follows that up with the "Breath Doubling Power" effect of "Digisoon", sending the top card of her Deck (another "Nuncharinet") to the Graveyard to increase its ATK by 800 for each Defense Position monster Asana controls until the end of the turn, powering it up to 3200 ATK as it glows green. Then she returns five WIND Warrior monsters ("Brassaxophone", "Trumpetonfa", "Horn Knives", "Flutomahawk", and "Nuncharinet") to her Deck to activate the Spell "Straight Pierce", increasing the ATK of "Digisoon" by 2000, to 5200, an ATK value Luke gasps in shock as Galian calls out in worry to Asana. But Tiger isn't finished yet, sending the "One-Side Reverse" in her hand to the Graveyard to activate the effect of "Ensembullfighter", preventing Asana from activating Trap Cards until the end of the turn when her WIND Warrior monsters attack. Tiger laughs that her ring finger is holding back laughter, while her index finger is screaming "tiger, tiger, tiger", and all of them are fierce warriors. "Digisoon" ignites its energy fingers and Tiger orders it to go forth with its "Ensemble Slash of the Lucky-Fingered Divine Strike" attack. As the green energy stream approaches the 2000 DEF "Buildragon", Tiger explains that the effect of "Straight Pierce" will allow "Digisoon" to inflict piercing battle damage and "Buildragon" is destroyed, reducing Asana to 800 LP. Galian calls out to her as Schubel and Caterpillio cry her name, while Luke cowers in fear as Romin comments on Tiger's ruthlessness despite being childhood friends with Asana and Gavin wonders wha happened between them, though Luke denies knowing anything when asked about the matter.

"Buildragon" is revived to protect Asana.

Tiger orders "Ensembullfighter" to end this Duel, but Asana explains that when "Buildragon" is destroyed she can activate a Trap Card, "Constructor Resurrection", Special Summoning "Buildragon" from her Graveyard. "Buildragon" rises up in Attack Position as Tiger gasps "What?!" in shock and Asana welcomes "Buildragon" back on-site. Schubel, Galian and Caterpillio are all impressed by Asana's move, and Tiger is forced to end her turn, the ATK of "Digisoon" returning to normal.

Asana declares her turn and draws five cards, then she activates a Field Spell Card; "Silvermountain of Blisstopia", explaining that it will allow her to Tribute Summon Level 7 or higher Wyrm monsters with only one Tribute. Snowy mountaintops surround everyone as they look around in surprise and Tiger muses that she could never forget that snowy day.

Asana and Tiadosia in their youth.

Asana was riding in R6's bucket as her great-grandfather drove the Heavy Cavalry, asking if this new girl would be her friend. Her great-grandfather replied that of course she would, given they were the same age. Asana asked the girl's name, and her great-grandfather told her it was Tiadosia Kallister just as they spotted her breaking down martial arts stands in her gi, impressing Asana. Tiadosia spotted Asana, finding her as cute as a princess, and Asana recalls that they became fast friends as she remembers clasping hands with Tiadosia in a field of sunflowers and giving one another the nicknames "Asalina" and "Tialina". From that day on they spent every day together and even had their first Goha Duels with one another. Tiger tears through the flashbacks and urges Asana to stop talking and just get to the snowy day.

Asana and Tiadosia searching for the missing Lucidien.

She remembers walking with Tiadosia in the snow, searching for Lucidien - Luke - (with Tiadosia calling her brother names to try get his attention) and eventually suggesting they split up. Tiadosia wasn't happy about it, but conceded this made sense due to how large their grounds were. Asana reassured Tiadosia that they'd find Lucidien in no time and after they parted ways, she called her great-grandfather and told him that Lucidien had gone missing, asking him to come with R6. In the present, Romin comments to Luke that their backstory is becoming all about him, though Luke frantically denies knowing anything, and when Gavin presses him further, insists that he doesn't know what he doesn't know. Romin and Gavin shrug it off as Luke being Luke, and he promptly springs up proudly and declares that he is Luke. Tiger scoffs that as soon as Asana said those flowery words she gave up searching and went home; she ended up finding her stupid mira-brogias on her own, having fallen asleep in a building containing a large clock behind an assemblage of gears while he was drawing. Tiadosia called him a stupid sleepyhead, but then dashed off to let Asana know, though she never found her.

Asana brings back her second "Drake Crush" with the effect of "Buildragon".

Since that day, Tiger swore that if she ever faced Asalina...no, Asana Mutsuba again, that she would defeat her. Schubel gasps in shock as Galian muses that the child they were searching for that day was Master Luke, and Romin asks if Luke really doesn't know anything. Luke cheerfully denies that he does, pointing out that he's Luke after all. Tiger demands that they return to the Duel, and Asana Summons another "Constructor Soldier Drillzard", then adds that she can Tribute Summon a Level 7 or higher Wyrm monster by using "Drillzard" as the only Tribute due to the effect of "Silvermountain of Blisstopia". Tributing "Drillzard", she chants "A black steel ball held up by heavy cavalry, its power exceeds that of our blue Earth! Constructor Demolisher Wyrm Drake Crush, engage!" "Drake Crush" stands with 2400 ATK, but Asana immediately uses the effect of "Silvermountain of Blisstopia" to Tribute it and Tribute Summon another "Drake Crush". Romin curiously wonders why Asana Tributed "Drake Crush" just to Summon another, though Gavin realizes what Asana is after; she activates the "Infinity Reclamation" effect of "Constructor Wyrm Buildragon" to Special Summon the "Drake Crush" from her Graveyard. Luke cheers Asana's move, and Romin realizes that this is what she's aiming for.

Schubel intervenes to tell Tiger the truth about what happened on the snowy day.

Tiger scoffs at the notion of letting Asana do that, activating her Trap Card "Music Princess Art - Triplet" to increase the ATK of all monsters on her field by 1000 until the end of the turn. "Digisoon" powers up to 3400 ATK and "Ensembullfighter" to 3200 as Galian calls out to Asana and Caterpillio gasps that she's in a pinch, while Schubel squirms uncomfortably as Tiger declares that she'll have Asana apologize to her for what happened that day, as she's never once heard an apology from her and she'll have her on her knees. This proves to be the final straw for Schubel, who jumps in with the just-arrived Pidgetrap to insist that Asana didn't do anything wrong. Asana gasps their names in surprise and Tiger orders them to move out of her way, but Schubel insists that Asana was still looking for Luke after they split up that day, much to Tiger's shock. Pidgetrap chirps, and Schubel translates; it was because of that Asana found them. Asana protests that it's fine, but Schubel insists that it isn't and Pidgetrap chirps in agreement. Schubel explains that he and Pidgetrap were helping out with the family delivery business that day, much to Tiger's confusion, and he clarifies that their family runs CooQuill Express. Tiger asks what he means by "their family", and Asana clarifies that Schubel and Pidgetrap are brothers, much to Tiger, Luke, Romin and Gavin's collective shock. Luke asks if it's the CooQuill Express (singing the title as he does so) and Schubel proudly confirms that it is (also singing the title); they're a super well-known household and he and Pidgetrap grew up in a large delivery warehouse and office. The father pigeon had sent the eldest son off to the East Area, their daughter to the West Area, their second son to the South Area and left the North Area to Pidgetrap and Schubel, who had vowed they would do their best. Their mother pigeon had warned them to be careful due to the heavy snow, but a massive pile of snow fell from the trees above them during their delivery and buried them. As they were buried, Schubel told Pidgetrap that they would always be together, and though Pidgetrap weakly accused Schubel of being a crybaby, Schubel weakly pointed out that Pidgetrap was crying too. Fortunately they were rescued by Asana and her great-grandfather using R6, Asana asking if they were all right.

Asana apologizes to Tiger.

Back in the present Schubel explained that Asana then learned that Luke had been found, so they immediately took Schubel and Pidgetrap to the hospital since they were so weak. Tiger angrily demands why Asana never said anything about this until now, and Asana admits that she didn't want to make excuses, as it was her fault for leaving Tialina without saying anything, so she believed she had no right to explain herself. (In the dub, Asana claims she sent a message via a pigeon, which Tiger never received. Chevelle admits this was likely his family's fault too, as they would have been too worried over his condition to deliver it.) Tiger can only gasp in shock as Asana bows to her and apologizes to Tialina, but then corrects herself and calls her Tiger. Tiger finally collects herself and she smiles, telling Asana that she can call her Tialina, much to Asana's surprise. Tiger apologizes as well, calling Asana "Asalina", and Asana smiles at her as Schubel and Caterpillio smile and Galian tears up, while Romin and Gavin smile too...and then Luke ruins the moment by calling his sister "Tialina" and is promptly yelled into a wall for doing so, much to Romin, Gavin and Schubel's exasperation. Tiger smiles and suggests that they continue their Duel, and Asana eagerly agrees. Tiger reflects that her anger from that day is gone like the melting snow, but the past is the past and they are in the present, and a Duel is always a serious battle; the fact that they are rivals has not changed. She vows that she will win with her own techniques.

Tiger is defeated.

Asana wonders about that, as she also has her own techniques. Tiger gasps in shock and Gavin takes note of techniques clashing and declares that this is worth their maximum attention. Asana activates her face-down Spell, "Constructor Art - Buildestruction", increasing the ATK of her two "Drake Crush" by 600, to 3000 each, then reducing the ATK of all monsters Tiger controls with at least 3000 ATK by 1200, reducing "Digisoon" to 2200 ATK and "Ensembullfighter" to 2000 ATK. Tiger can only gasp "What?!" and Asana orders her two "Drake Crush" to attack with "Termination Crush"; the first one destroys "Ensembullfighter" with a sweep of its tail club and reduces Tiger to 3000 LP, while the second crushes "Digisoon" beneath its tail club, reducing Tiger to 2200 LP. Asana orders "Buildragon" to finish it, attacking directly with "Heavy Pride Crush". "Buildragon" sweeps its own tail club towards Tiger, who jams her bassoon into the ground to brace herself as the attack hits, screaming as her LP falls to zero.

The Solid Vision around them disappears, and their Duel Disks retract. Tiger grits her teeth in frustration, but is surprised to see Asana holding out her hand and telling her that it was a fun Duel. Tiger blushes and she takes Asana's hand to get to her feet, agreeing that it was fun, but she won't lose next time. Asana vows that she won't either...and once again the moment is ruined by Luke, who butts in and comments that this is great while calling them "Asalina" and "Tialina". Tiger promptly yells him away for calling her "Tialina" again (in the dub she declares that only she can call Asana "Asalina") - and the wall shatters behind Luke, revealing a large box emblazoned with the Goha Enterprises label. The Goha 66 members promptly swarm over it, gasping that it's the main server, despite Luke's protests, but they don't seem to know how it works. Gavin notes that it looks very outdated, and the still-bound Kaizo declares that a server like that could never contain all Dueling information, and the leader of Goha 66 collapses in disappointment with a scrap of paper in his hand, asking what this is. Gavin, Luke and Romin peek over to look at it and are shocked by what they see written there as a black Goha Enterprises Drone records them.

Pidgetrap delivers another message to Yuga after Nail defeats Booster.

As the sun sets over Goha City, "Yggdrago the Sky Emperor" fades away and a pink Goha Enterprises Drone declares that Nail Saionji is the winner. The defeated Booster Page opens his visor and admits that Nail's "Yggdrago" really was amazing and admits that he deserve the win. Nail claims that it was providence, and Roa comments that Booster, Leo and Valencia tried their best. Then Pidgetrap delivers another message to them, reading "My best, most awesome plan to take over Goha" (in the dub it's simply a message explaining what transpired at Maximum Mountain) and as Yuga looks at Valencia's binoculars he realizes something. On a videoscreen attached to a blimp above them, Oceania Illumilina announces the point totals; the first and second teams are Team YNR, with 770 points and just seven points behind them, on 763 are Team King Luke's Kings. With a gasp of "Oh. My. Cod!" Oceania declares that the final matches will be super close and urges the viewers not to miss it, as Nail, Yuga and Roa watch in determination.

Featured Duel: Tiadosia "Tiger" Kallister vs Asana Mutsuba

Tiger VS Asana.png

The Duel is conducted as a Rush Duel.

Turn 1: Tiger
Tiger's hand contains "Clubinet the Music Princess", "Brassaxophone the Music Princess", "Defensive Breath", and "Music Princess Art - Triplet". Tiger draws "Ensembullfighter the Music Fiend". Tiger Normal Summons "Clubinet the Music Princess" (800/1400) and "Brassaxophone the Music Princess" (1000/1200). Tiger Tributes "Clubinet" and "Brassaxophone" to Tribute Summon "Ensembullfighter the Music Fiend" (2200/2200). Tiger Sets two cards.

Turn 2: Asana
Asana's hand contains "Constructor Soldier Drillzard", "Constructor Warrior Shovelon", "Constructor Resurrection", and "Constructor Art - Buildestruction". Asana draws "Constructor Wyrm Buildragon". Asana Normal Summons "Constructor Soldier Drillzard" (1100/800) and "Constructor Warrior Shovelon" (1500/0). Asana Tributes "Drillzard" and "Shovelon" to Tribute Summon "Constructor Wyrm Buildragon" (2500/2000). Asana Sets two cards. "Buildragon" attacks "Ensembullfighter", but as a monster Asana controls declared an attack, Tiger activates her Set Trap "Defensive Breath", sending the top two cards of her Deck to the Graveyard to choose a WIND Warrior monster she controls and change it to face-up Defense Position and have that monster gain 300 DEF until the end of this turn. She sends "Trumpetonfa the Music Princess" and "Nuncharinet the Music Princess" from the top of her Deck to the Graveyard and chooses "Ensembullfighter", changing it to face-up Defense Position ("Ensembullfighter": 2200/2200 → 2200/2500). The attack fails.

Turn 3: Tiger
Tiger draws "Horn Knives the Music Princess", "Digisoon the Music Fiend", "Music Princess's Whirling Wind", "Straight Pierce", and "One-Side Reverse". Tiger switches "Ensembullfighter" to Attack Position. Tiger Normal Summons "Horn Knives the Music Princess" (500/500). As "Horn Knives" was Normal Summoned this turn, Tiger activates its effect, sending the top card of her Deck to the Graveyard, and if that card is a Warrior monster, she can add a Warrior Normal Monster from her Graveyard to her hand. She sends "Flutomahawk the Music Princess" from the top of her Deck to the Graveyard, then adds "Flutomahawk" from her Graveyard to her hand. Tiger Normal Summons "Flutomahawk the Music Princess" (1500/0). Tiger Tributes "Horn Knives" and "Flutomahawk" to Tribute Summon "Digisoon the Music Fiend" (2400/2000). As Tiger controls a Level 5 or higher WIND Warrior monster, she activates the Spell "Music Princess's Whirling Wind", choosing up to two Attack Position monsters Asana controls and changing them to face-up Defense Position. She changes "Buildragon" to Defense Position. As Asana controls a Defense Position monster, Tiger activates the effect of "Digisoon", sending the top card of her Deck to the Graveyard to have it gain 800 ATK for each Defense Position monster Asana controls. Tiger sends "Nuncharinet" from the top of her Deck to the Graveyard ("Digisoon": 2400/2000 → 3200/2000). Tiger activates the Spell "Straight Pierce", returning five WIND Warrior monsters from her Graveyard to her Deck to choose a Level 7 or 8 monster she controls to have it gain 2000 ATK until the end of this turn and grant it the ability to inflict piercing battle damage this turn. She returns "Brassaxophone", "Trumpetonfa", "Horn Knives", "Flutomahawk", and "Nuncharinet" from her Graveyard to her Deck and chooses "Digisoon" ("Digisoon": 3200/2000 → 5200/2000). Tiger activates the effect of "Ensembullfighter", sending a card from her hand to the Graveyard to prevent Asana from activating Trap Cards this turn when her WIND Warrior monsters attack while "Ensembullfighter" is face-up. She sends "One-Side Reverse" from her hand to the Graveyard. Asana's Set cards are "Constructor Art - Buildestruction" and "Constructor Resurrection". "Digisoon" attacks and destroys "Buildragon" (Asana: 4000 → 800 LP). As a Level 7 or higher Wyrm monster she controls was destroyed by battle with an opponent's attacking monster, Asana activates her Set Trap "Constructor Resurrection", Special Summoning a Level 7 or higher Wyrm monster from her Graveyard. She Special Summons "Buildragon" in Attack Position (2500/2000).

Turn 4: Asana
As Tiger controls a Level 7 or higher monster, Asana activates the Field Spell "Silvermountain of Blisstopia". The effect of "Silvermountain" allows both players to Tribute Summon Level 7 or higher Wyrm monsters in Attack Position by Tributing one monster. Asana Normal Summons "Drillzard" (1100/800). Asana Tributes "Drillzard" to Tribute Summon "Constructor Demolisher Wyrm Drake Crush" (2400/1900). Asana Tributes "Drake Crush" to Tribute Summon a second "Drake Crush" (2400/1900). As there is a face-up Field Spell on the field, Asana activates the effect of "Buildragon", Special Summoning a Wyrm Normal Monster from her Graveyard. She Special Summons "Drake Crush" from her Graveyard in Attack Position (2400/1900). As Asana Normal or Special Summoned a monster and she now controls three monsters, Tiger activates her Set Trap "Music Princess Art - Triplet", increasing the ATK of all WIND Warrior monsters she controls by 1000 until the end of the turn ("Ensembullfighter": 2200/2200 → 3200/2200) ("Digisoon": 2400/2000 → 3400/2000). Asana activates her Set Spell "Constructor Art - Buildestruction", increasing the ATK of all Level 7 or higher Wyrm Normal Monsters she controls by 600 until the end of this turn, then reducing the ATK all monsters Tiger controls with 3000 or more ATK by 1200 until the end of the turn ("Drake Crush": 2400/1900 → 3000/1900) ("Drake Crush": 2400/1900 → 3000/1900) ("Ensembullfighter": 3200/2200 → 2000/2200) ("Digisoon": 3400/2000 → 2200/2000). One "Drake Crush" attacks and destroys "Ensembullfighter" (Tiger: 4000 → 3000 LP). The other "Drake Crush" attacks and destroys "Digisoon" (Tiger: 3000 → 2200 LP). "Buildragon" attacks Tiger directly (Tiger: 2200 → 0 LP).
