SummaryEdit

Playmaker and Ghost Gal continue their Speed Duel; Ghost Gal still has all 4000 LP and controls two Set cards, "Altergeist Meluseek", "Altergeist Marionetter", and "Altergeist Primebanshee", while Playmaker's field is empty and he is down to 1900 LP (Ghost Gal narrates this situation in the dub). Ai tells Playmaker to shape up or the next attack will wipe him out (in the dub, he asks if Playmaker has a plan, and comments that now would be the time to let him in on it). Up above them, Pigeon gasps his boss's real name, and Frog calls it unbelievable, wondering if LINK VRAINS' hero will finally lose today. Pigeon urges him to focus; if they don't get this big scoop they'll be fired for sure. Frog calls him heartless, especially if he calls himself a Duelist. Pigeon replies that he just doesn't want Frog to lose his directing job, and Frog bursts into tears, touched that Pigeon cares about him so. Pigeon states that he respects Yamamoto as his boss, but Frog reaches up to hug him in gratitude, and Pigeon struggles to stay on course as he gasps that he can't breathe (in the dub, rather than worry, Pigeon celebrates the pay they'll get if Playmaker loses, and warns Frog that he could wind up feasting on actual worms if they don't; Frog worries about that, and Pigeon reassures him that he'll take him to a buffet after getting paid. Frog the grabs him, ordering him to catch up with them). In Café Nom, Kolter watches a battle simulation table showing Playmaker's LP being wiped out by the attack of the 2100 ATK "Primebanshee" (in the dub, he thinks that he doesn't know how Yusaku will get out of this, but if anyone can it's him).

Ai tries to convince Ghost Gal to attack them.

Ghost Gal declares battle, ordering "Altergeist Primebanshee" to attack directly. "Primebanshee" readies its tendrils, and Ai screams that it's over, covering his eyes before peeking (in the dub, he screams that he can't watch - or maybe he can). Playmaker explains that when Ghost Gal's monster attacks him directly, he can Special Summon "Lockout Gardna" from his hand in Attack Position, and it can't be destroyed in battle this turn. Ghost Gal's eyes widen in shock, and Ai muses that if the 2100 ATK "Primebanshee" attacks the 1000 ATK "Lockout Gardna", they'll be left with 800 LP; a score low enough for them to activate "Storm Access" (in the dub, he discusses that Ghost Gal now gets to make a replay). Ai gasps that this is bad; if Ghost Gal attacks, they won't lose, but they'll have lost most of their LP. He dramatically cries that it's all over, and as he claims that Playmaker will be sad when he's gone, Ghost Gal wonders what's up with his horrible acting job (in the dub she's silent). Her Duel Disk's A.I. reminds her that Playmaker can activate his Skill when he has 1000 or less LP. Ghost Gal looks back at Ai, wondering if he thinks that horrible acting will get her to attack, and she ends her turn (in the dub, Ghost Gal is at a loss for words before just ending her turn). Ai is shocked, asking why she didn't attack after his performance, and Playmaker tells him it's because his acting stinks. Ai takes the comment literally and sniffs himself for a bit to check. Pigeon wonders why Ghost Gal stopped her attack, and Frog explains that it was to prevent Playmaker from using his Skill (in the dub he doesn't know why, but knows that Ghost Gal was likely wary of a move Playmaker had). Pigeon muses that he sees, and Frog expresses relief that Playmaker's safe. Pigeon reminds him that he needs Playmaker to lose for his bonus special, and Frog cries that he's right, and he wriggles in Pigeon's grasp as he laments that he must remain objective as a reporter (in the dub, he angsts over the moral dilemma of Playmaker losing and him getting a big paycheck).

"Altergeist Primebanshee" is protected from the effect of "Backlinker".

Ghost Gal and Playmaker ride over the crest of a wave and under a bridge, with Playmaker declaring his turn and drawing mid-jump (in the dub, Ai cautions him over his reckless surfing). As they steady, he sees that he's drawn "Balancer Lord", but before he can make a move, Ghost Gal activates the Continuous Trap Card "Altergeist Protocol", and then she Tributes "Meluseek" to activate the effect of "Primebanshee", Special Summoning another "Altergeist" monster from her Deck to a zone that "Primebanshee" points to. She Special Summons "Altergeist Silquitous" in Defense Position, and then activates the effect of "Meluseek" since it was sent to the Graveyard, adding another "Altergeist" from her Deck to her hand. She chooses another "Altergeist Kunquery", and Ai reads the effect of the monster as Playmaker comments that he expected Ghost Gal to search out that monster. Ai whispers that the effect of "Kunquery" can negate a monster's attack, calling it a problematic card. Playmaker replies that he can't let up (in the dub, he tells Ai that there's no point whining), and he declares that he can Special Summon "Backlinker" when Ghost Gal is the only player who controls a monster in the Extra Monster Zone. Then he Tributes "Backlinker" to activate its effect, sending all monsters in the Extra Monster Zones to the Graveyard. Ai cheers the move, and as blue energy surrounds "Primebanshee", Ghost Gal declares that she won't allow it, sending "Marionetter" to the Graveyard to activate the effect of "Altergeist Protocol" and negate the effect of Playmaker's monster. A blue energy shield surrounds "Primebanshee", and Ghost Gal asks how that is; she's anticipated all of Playmaker's strategies.

"Backlinker" attempts to resurrect.

Ai growls that Ghost Gal is tough, and Playmaker explains that when his Cyberse monster's effect is negated, he can Special Summon "Striping Partner" (in the dub, he states that he hoped she'd make that move). Then, when "Striping Partner" is Special Summoned he can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster from his Graveyard, and he chooses "Backlinker". Ghost Gal warns him that she won't let him resurrect "Backlinker" to send "Primebanshee" to the Graveyard, and she activates the effect of "Silquitous", returning "Altergeist Protocol" to her hand to return "Striping Partner" to Playmaker's hand. But Playmaker responds with the effect of "Lockout Gardna" since Ghost Gal's monster's effect targeted a Cyberse monster, negating the effects of both monsters. "Lockout Gardna" shifts into its active form and glows with an orange light, and while "Backlinker" still remains in the Graveyard, saving "Primebanshee", but "Striping Partner" remains on the field, and Ghost Gal's A.I. notes that Playmaker has monsters for a Link Summon now. Ghost Gal looks at her hand, and then her Set "Altergeist Camouflage", noting that she still has that. Poor Pigeon can't keep up with the complexity of the Duel, his eyes swimming in dizziness, and Frog asks what he's talking about; Playmaker and Ghost Gal are outmaneuvering each other and experts would love this Duel (in the dub he tells Pigeon to keep his eyes on the Duel). The watching Kolter admits that he can't predict the outcome; Yusaku and Ghost Gal's Duel is at another level (in the dub, he notes that Ghost Gal seems to have backup plan after backup plan).

As they ride over another wave, Ghost Gal thinks that Playmaker is just as interesting as she expected (in the dub she tells him to Link Summon, as it's impolite to keep a lady waiting). Playmaker chants, "Appear, the circuit that leads to the future!" and conjures a Circuit in front of him. Authorizing the Link Arrows, he explains that the summoning conditions are two Effect Monsters, and he sets "Lockout Gardna" and "Striping Partner" in the Link Arrows to link the Circuit, Link Summoning the Link-2 "Underclock Taker". Then he summons "Balancer Lord", and he explains that as "Balancer Lord" is in a zone "Underclock Taker" points to, he can reduce the ATK of "Primebanshee" by the 1700 ATK of "Balancer Lord". Ghost Gal replies that she won't let him (in the dub, she calls it a scary combo - if it worked), activating her Set Trap Card "Altergeist Camouflage" and equipping it to "Primebanshee", which turns it transparent. It prevents the effect from affecting "Primebanshee", and Ai laments that the effect of "Underclock Taker" was negated (in the dub, he grouches over her sarcasm). Ghost Gal adds that "Camouflage" also prevents Playmaker from attacking "Primebanshee", so it's completely protected. She thinks that Playmaker is interesting, but he's reached his limit (in the dub, she tells him that it's over).

The effect of "Balancer Lord" drops Playmaker's LP below 1000.

Playmaker asks if she's sure, and he pays 1000 LP to activate the effect of "Balancer Lord", bringing him down to 900 LP. Ghost Gal's A.I. notes that Playmaker has 900 LP, so he can now activate his Skill. Ghost Gal snaps that she won't let him activate his Skill, and Playmaker isn't the only one with a Skill. She activates her own Skill, "Secret Cure", and the lines on her outfit glow purple. Ai is shocked, wondering what her Skill is (in the dub, he admits that he's excited to see what it is) and Ghost Gal explains that she can excavate cards from the top of her Deck until she reveals a monster, which will be added to her and and they will both gain LP equal to its ATK. She glows a bright purple, and then draws. The first card is another "Altergeist Camouflage", which goes to the Graveyard, but the second is another "Altergeist Meluseek", and its 500 ATK is added to their LP. Ghost Gal rises to 4500 LP, and Playmaker to 1400. Ai notes that she drew "Meluseek", and he doesn't like it since that card gave them trouble before (in the dub, Ai is irritated that they couldn't use their Skill, though he admits that the extra LP is a nice touch...that makes him so angry). Playmaker comments that he doesn't like giving up, and he explains that he still has the effect of "Balancer Lord" that he activated, allowing him to Normal Summon another Cyberse monster in addition to his Normal Summon/Set. He summons "Scan Doll", and activates its effect since it was summoned by paying 1000 LP. His LP falls to 400, and Ghost Gal's A.I. informs her that Playmaker has 400 LP, much to her displeasure (in the dub she calls the move rude). Playmaker explains that the effect of "Scan Doll" allows him to activate the effect of her "Altergeist Camouflage" on "Siquitous". Ghost Gal asks what for, and her A.I. highlights the effect of "Camouflage", explaining that camouflaged monsters do not prevent Playmaker from attacking directly. Ghost Gal muses that Playmaker has forgotten that she has "Kunquery" in her hand, and "Silquitous" turns transparent.

Playmaker's newest monster appears to him.

Ai declares that Playmaker can activate his Skill now, and he urges Playmaker to draw a comeback card (in the dub, he spots the nearby Data Storm). A Data Storm begins whipping up in the center of the city, digitizing buildings in its area, and as it surges together, Playmaker heads towards, Ai gasping that it's powerful. Ghost Gal follows him, and Pigeon and Frog are blown back, Pigeon screaming his boss's name as Frog calls the Data Storm savage. Ghost Gal leads Playmaker into the Data Storm from the top as it thrashes around in the city. Frog urges Pigeon to get a close-up, and Pigeon protests that if they get any closer the winds will drag them in. Frog cries that he doesn't care, and he tells Pigeon to go. Pigeon replies "Aye aye, sir!" in English and flaps his wings as hard as he can, but they're barely moving and Frog tells him that's he's too slow. Pigeon gasps that he's trying as hard as he can, but then Frog realizes that he's lost sight of Playmaker and Ghost Gal and he asks where they are (in the dub, Pigeon never agrees and screams the whole time). Within the Data Storm, Ghost Gal clings to her Duel Board, asking what's with all of this data and observing that it's a powerful Data Storm. Ai tells Playmaker to activate his Skill (in the dub, he tells him to seize the wind), and Playmaker holds out his hand, concentrating data particles into his palm. Ghost Gal laments her inability to prevent him from activating his Skill as Playmaker conjures the completed card and declares "Storm Access!" As he holds up the card, a green-tinted warrior with shields on each arm appears to him.

Playmaker saves Ghost Gal.

Ghost Gal is swept into the depths of the Data Storm with a scream, losing control of her Duel Board. Playmaker banks around and heads after her. Ai asks what he's doing, and Playmaker replies that he's saving Ghost Gal (in the dub, they are silent here). Ai protests that they'll be swallowed up too, and Ghost Gal falls off her Duel Board. Playmaker dives towards her and grabs her wrist. Ghost Gal whispers his name in shock (in the dub, she tells him not to let go). Playmaker hoists her up, commenting that she seems to be okay. Ghost Gal watches in shock as they head back up (in the dub, she agrees that she is in a shocked tone) and Playmaker reminds her that their Duel isn't over yet. He drops her within reach of her Duel Board, and Ghost Gal catches the back and vaults back onto it. Playmaker calls out as the monster that he acquired from the Data Storm appears to him again, and he and Ghost Gal emerge from the winds. Ai respectfully comments that Playmaker is like a superhero (in the dub, he snarks at Playmaker for putting him in danger), and up above, Pigeon spots them and tells Frog that they're over there. Frog gasps that they've emerged, and Pigeon cries that they're okay. Ghost Gal thanks Playmaker, but reminds him that his deeds won't affect their Duel (in the dub, she states that she'll cut him in on the profits after she sells his A.I.). Playmaker agrees with a grin (in the dub he chuckles that it won't be necessary), and he chants "Appear, the circuit that leads to the future!" and conjures a Circuit in front of him. Authorizing the Link Arrows, he explains that the summoning conditions are at least two Cyberse monsters, and he sets the Link-2 "Underclock Taker" and "Balancer Lord" in the Link Arrows to link the Circuit, Link Summoning the Link-3 "Excode Talker", which appears with 2300 ATK.

"Excode Talker" activates its special ability.

Ghost Gal notes that even if Playmaker attacks her directly, she has "Kunquery", and she vows not to let him attack her. Playmaker activates the effect of "Excode Talker"; "Grasp Zone". "Excode Talker" gathers green orbs of energy in its hands, and Playmaker explains that for every monster in the Extra Monster Zones, Ghost Gal will be unable to use one of her Main Monster Zones. "Excode Talker" launches the energy balls and Ghost Gal gasps "No way!" as Playmaker explains that there are two monsters in the Extra Monster Zones, so Ghost Gal will be unable to use her other Main Monster Zones. The energy balls swell and then dissipate as Ghost Gal frowns, thinking that she can't use the effect of "Kunquery" if she can't Special Summon it. Even though she has two monsters on the field, they can't be attacked due to the effect of "Camouflage" (in the dub, she makes it clearer that she can be attacked directly). Playmaker then Tributes "Scan Doll" to activate its effect, allowing "Excode Talker" to attack twice. "Excode Talker" sprouts energy switchblades from its shields and Ghost Gal gasps that Playmaker has surpassed her expectations. Playmaker orders "Excode Talker" to attack directly, and "Excode Talker" slashes twice, reducing Ghost Gal to 2200 LP. Ai comments that it's over, and he tells Ghost Gal to prepare herself (in the dub he is less sinister). Playmaker attack directly with "Excode Talker" again, declaring its "Closing Chaos" attack. "Excode Talker" leaps into the air and slashes as it comes past Ghost Gal, landing in a crouch. Ghost Gal screams as she is thrown from her Duel Board, and as she falls she thinks that she completely lost (in the dub, she admits that Playmaker won). Her LP falls to zero. Frog cheers that Playmaker did it; he truly is the hero of LINK VRAINS. Pigeon asks why he's celebrating; their hero's first defeat would have been a huge scoop.

On top of a rooftop, Ai sighs and he comments that if it wasn't for him, who knows what would have happened, calling it stressful. Ghost Gal notes that the moon is pretty tonight, and Ai comments that it just look like data to him. Ghost Gal replies that a dumb A.I. can't understand such feelings. (In the dub, this conversation is completely changed; Ghost Gal comments that Playmaker knows how to show a girl a good time; Ai comments that he's not gonna judge her if she thinks that was a good time, before changing his mind and judging her. Ghost Gal calls him feisty, and asks if he's sure he doesn't want to come with her. Ai replies that he would, but he can't be bothered moving; Ghost Gal calls it a pity, joking that she was going to introduce him to some cute widgets, catching Ai's attention before Playmaker cuts the conversation short). Playmaker reminds Ghost Gal of what she promised, and Ghost Gal holds her hand up, transferring a golden orb to Playmaker. The golden card briefly materializes in his hand, and Ghost Gal states that now he has the backdoor to SOL Technologies' data bank. She heads off, bidding him farewell and thinking that it's going to get interesting (in the dub, she tells him not to do anything she wouldn't, and thinks that she hopes that he can do what she couldn't). Ai asks Playmaker what's in SOL Technologies' data bank, and Playmaker admits that he doesn't know, before thinking back to his childhood, stating that there may be something about himself from ten years ago. He looks up at the moon as Ai asks if that's important, but he doesn't get a reply (in the dub, he comments that there are likely other secrets there too, like Playmaker's sense of humor).

Ghost Gal appears instead of Frog and Pigeon's scoop.

In a nearby park, Frog asks if Pigeon filmed the Duel, and Pigeon states that he got the whole thing. Frog admits that they didn't get a scoop on Playmaker's historical defeat, but they did film a fantastic Duel. Pigeon cheers that they can finish the Playmaker T.V. special, and Frog tells him to play back the Duel (in the dub, they celebrate over potential bonuses). Pigeon activates his projector, but the image comes up as static, much to his confusion. Frog asks what's up, and Pigeon protests that something is messing with the recording. To his shock, an image of Ghost Gal appears lying seductively on a bed and apologizing for erasing their recording before waving (she adds that her Duel wasn't for their eyes), and the message "DATA DELETED" appears on their screen with a heart on either side. Frog and Pigeon freak out, and Pigeon asks what they should do, but Frog tells him not to use his real name (in the dub, they focus on the chances of getting their footage back). Ghost Gal watches them squabble from a nearby rooftop, thinking that this Duel will be a secret between her and Playmaker (in the dub, having told them this in her recording, she simply thinks that they're cute when they squabble).

In Café Nom, Kolter analyses the backdoor program as Yusaku brings him coffee, and he thanks Yusaku. Yusaku asks if Kolter can analyse the program, and Kolter replies that of course he can. Yusaku states that he's counting on him, and as Kolter takes a sip, he sees that Yusaku has fallen asleep. He laughs and gets back to work.

Featured Duel: Playmaker vs. Ghost GalEdit

Duel continues from the previous episode.

Playmaker has 1900 LP and controls no cards. Ghost Gal has 4000 LP and controls "Altergeist Primebanshee" (2100/↓↘→) in the Extra Monster Zone, "Altergeist Marionetter" (1600/1700) and "Altergeist Meluseek" (500/300) (with "Meluseek" in the Main Monster Zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Primebanshee" points to), all in Attack Position, as well as 2 Set cards in her Spell & Trap Zone.

Turn 3: Ghost Gal
"Altergeist Primebanshee" attacks Playmaker directly. As Ghost Gal's monster declared a direct attack, Playmaker activates the effect of "Lockout Gardna" in his hand, Special Summoning it (1000/1000) in Attack Position, and it cannot be destroyed by battle this turn. A replay occurs and Ghost Gal chooses to cancel the attack.

Turn 4: Playmaker
Playmaker draws "Balancer Lord". Ghost Gal activates her face-down Continuous Trap "Altergeist Protocol". During the Main Phase, Ghost Gal activates the effect of "Primebanshee", Tributing one other "Altergeist" monster to Special Summon an "Altergeist" monster from her Deck to her zone "Primebanshee" points to. She Tributes "Meluseek" and Special Summons "Altergeist Silquitous" (800/1500) in Defense Position to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Primebanshee" points to. As "Meluseek" was sent from the field to the GY, Ghost Gal activates its effect, adding a different "Altergeist" monster from her Deck to her hand. She adds "Altergeist Kunquery". As only Ghost Gal controls a monster in the Extra Monster Zone, Playmaker Special Summons "Backlinker" (1600/0) from his hand by its own effect. Playmaker activates the effect of "Backlinker", Tributing it to send all monsters in the Extra Monster Zones to the GY. "Backlinker" is Tributed, but as Playmaker activated a monster effect, Ghost Gal activates the effect of "Protocol", sending one other face-up "Altergeist" card she controls to the GY to negate the activation, then destroy it. She sends "Marionetter" and negates the activation of the effect of "Backlinker". As activation of the effect of Playmaker's Cyberse monster is negated by Ghost Gal's card effect, Playmaker activates the effect of "Striping Partner" in his hand, Special Summoning it (1200/1600). As "Striping Partner" was Special Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, targeting a Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster in his GY and Special Summoning it. He targets the Level 3 "Backlinker", but Ghost Gal activates the effect of "Silquitous", returning one other "Altergeist" card she controls to the hand, then targeting a card Playmaker controls to return it to the hand. She returns "Protocol" and targets "Striping Partner", but as an effect of a monster Ghost Gal controls is activated that targets exactly one Cyberse monster Playmaker controls, he activates the effect of "Lockout Gardna", negating the effects of both that Cyberse monster he controls and Ghost Gal's monster until the end of this turn. The effects of both "Silquitous" and "Striping Partner" are negated.

Playmaker sets "Lockout Gardna" and "Striping Partner" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Underclock Taker" (1000/←↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker Normal Summons "Balancer Lord" (1700/1200) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Underclock Taker" points to. Playmaker activates the effect of "Underclock Taker", targeting a face-up monster it points to and a face-up monster Ghost Gal controls and decreasing the ATK of Ghost Gal's monster equal to the ATK of the monster "Underclock Taker" points to until the end of this turn. He targets "Balancer Lord" and "Primebanshee", but Ghost Gal activates her face-down Trap "Altergeist Camouflage", targeting an "Altergeist" monster she controls and equipping "Camouflage" to it. The effect of "Camouflage" negates Playmaker's monster effect that activates by targeting the equipped "Primebanshee". The effect of "Underclock Taker" is negated. The effect of "Camouflage" prevents Playmaker from targeting the equipped "Primebanshee" for attacks, but it does not prevent Playmaker from attacking directly. Playmaker activates the effect of "Balancer Lord", paying 1000 LP to allow him to Normal Summon a Cyberse monster during his Main Phase this turn, in addition to his Normal Summon/Set (Playmaker: 1900 → 900 LP). Ghost Gal activates her Skill "Secret Cure", excavating cards from the top of her Deck until she excavates a Monster Card. That monster is added to her hand, and both players gain LP equal to that monster's ATK. Any other excavated cards are sent to the GY. She excavates "Camouflage" and sends it to the GY, then excavates "Meluseek" (500/300) and adds it to her hand (Playmaker: 900 → 1400 LP, Ghost Gal: 4000 → 4500 LP). Playmaker Normal Summons "Scan Doll" (100/1600). As "Scan Doll" was Normal Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, paying 1000 LP, then targeting a Trap in Ghost Gal's GY to activate it on Ghost Gal's field (Playmaker: 1400 → 400 LP). He targets "Camouflage" and activates it on Ghost Gal's field, targeting an "Altergeist" monster Ghost Gal controls and equipping "Camouflage" to it. He targets "Silquitous".

At this point, Playmaker enters the Data Storm. As Playmaker's LP is 1000 or less, he activates his Skill "Storm Access", accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Excode Talker" and adds it to his Extra Deck.

Playmaker sets "Balancer Lord" and the Link-2 "Underclock Taker" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Excode Talker" (2300/←↑→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Excode Talker" was Link Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, choosing unused Main Monster Zones equal to the number of monsters currently in the Extra Monster Zones and preventing those zones from being used while "Excode Talker" is face-up on the field. "Primebanshee" and "Excode Talker" are in the Extra Monster Zones, so Playmaker chooses and prevents the use of Ghost Gal's two remaining Main Monster Zones. Playmaker activates the effect of "Scan Doll", Tributing it, then targeting a monster he controls to allow it to make a second attack during each Battle Phase this turn. He targets "Excode Talker". "Excode Talker" attacks Ghost Gal directly twice (Ghost Gal: 4500 → 2200 → 0 LP).

Featured cardsEdit

The following cards appeared in this episode. Cards in italics debuted here.

Differences in adaptationsEdit

  • As Ghost Gal activates her Skill, the shots of her chest and rear that show her outfit's purple outlines glowing are cut.
  • When Playmaker negates the effect of his "Striping Partner" and notes that he won't be reviving "Backlinker", he calls it "Backliner".
