"The Weakest Link", known as "Wisdom of the Deprived" in the Japanese version, is the eighty-sixth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on January 23, 2019, and aired in Canada on September 27, 2020.

In Mirror LINK VRAINS, "Decode Talker" attacks and defeats a BitBoot, who fall backwards, incredulous that they lost. Soulburner and Varis also attack with "Salamangreat Heatleo" and "Borrelguard Dragon" respectively, and as the BitBoot he is fighting is defeated, Bit and Boot blame one another for their loss. Spectre politely asks the weaklings to vanish (in the dub, he is not so polite), and vines swat aside another BitBoot, who is erased as his LP falls to zero. Playmaker asks if everyone can hear him, and he suggests they split apart and search for Lightning (in the dub, he warns that Lightning likely has other surprises in store for them). But then Mirror LINK VRAINS begins to glitch and shake around them, and Ai nervously asks what's going on (in the dub, he asks if this is what Playmaker meant). The real LINK VRAINS is also quaking, and as the users cry out nervously, Zaizen, who has joined Ghost Gal atop a rooftop, asks if something is still happening. In Café Nom, Kolter watches as the images of LINK VRAINS and Mirror LINK VRAINS overlap on his screen, and he notes that LINK VRAINS is realigning. The images overlay and then the screen displays "NO SIGNAL", and Kolter muses that outside connections have been shut out, hoping that his program works.
Suddenly the engines of everyone's Duel Boards deactivate, and they begin to fall. Ai gasps that there's less Data Material (in the dub he just cries that this isn't good), and Playmaker leaps off his Duel Board and lands on a platform covered in water reflecting the red skies of Mirror LINK VRAINS, while Varis has landed in a field of flowers and Soulburner and Flame sit on an airport runway. Blue Maiden meanwhile manages to slow her fall and materialize her Blue Angel wings to fly her and Aqua to safety, but Spectre isn't so lucky, crashing into a slope in a canyon and rolling down the hill in a cloud of dust. On Roken's speedboat, Klarissa asks what caused the shutdown, and Alec explains that the entrance to Mirror LINK VRAINS closed. Dr. Genome tells them to restore it immediately, and Alec reassures him that he already started (in the dub, Alec infers that Genome will find it, and Genome agrees, it's just a matter of how). Back in Mirror LINK VRAINS, Ai looks around, commenting that this is a weird place and wondering what they should do (in the dub, he wonders if everyone else is okay). Then Playmaker's Duel Disk glows purple, and Ai gasps that Kolter's program as activated. The sensation travels up his body, and he mutters that it was gross. Shots of all five Duelists - Playmaker, Varis, Soulburner, Blue Maiden and Spectre - blink on in Café Nom, and Kolter gasps that it's working and everyone's okay. He sends the footage to the Knights of Hanoi Commanders as well, and Klarissa declares that it's here. Alec asks if it's from Kolter, and Klarissa notes that Playmaker's ally deals with problems quickly, while Genome agrees that Kolter is a skilled hacker. Alec declares that they'll use this as a foothold to hack into Mirror LINK VRAINS (in the dub, Klarissa congratulates Genome, but Genome admits it wasn't him, but Kolter. Alec notes that it came back just in time; who knows what dangers await Varis and Spectre). Ai asks if they'll have to search on foot for Lightning without any Data Material, but Playmaker notes that may not be possible.
Sure enough, aurora-like barriers appear around everyone, and Blue Maiden flies right into one, which electrocutes her and throws her back. She lands on a rooftop, shocked that the barrier appeared, and Aqua notes that they're trapped. Blue Maiden realizes that this was a trap, and Aqua adds that Lightning must have done this.
At Lightning's palace, Lightning and Windy watch Playmaker's team from the wrists of Jin and Echo. Windy asks why they have to do all this work, and Lightning explains that humans have a strong power called "bonds"; when they are together they unleash a power they must not underestimate, so they shouldn't take any risks. Windy asks if that isn't just a superstition (in the dub he takes the notion literally), and Lightning reminds him that there are less of them than the humans, and they have to carefully defeat them one at a time. Windy suggests they have the humans watch their friends be defeated one by one, and make them feel fear and humiliation. Lightning notes this would mean they are revealing their plan to them, but Windy laughs and suggests Lightning go with the flow; does he really think they'll lose if the humans know their plan. Lightning sighs and acquiesces, agreeing that it will be advantageous if they can break their confidence (in the dub, Lightning agrees more readily, but is concerned over broadcasting the Duels). Windy states that he just captured people capable of broadcasting the Duels, and he materializing Frog and Pigeon, who fall hugging one another and crash to the ground. As Frog yelps in pain, Pigeon nervously asks who these people are, and Frog angrily asks how he should know. Windy states that they are Ignis, not people, and Pigeon asks if their enemies have kidnapped them. Windy confirms that they have, telling the duo that they will work for them. Frog nervously tells them not to underestimate the and refuses, and Lightning calls his spirit admirable, while Windy warns them that they don't have a choice, materializing collars around their necks and warning them that they will explode in an instant when they ask what they are (in the dub, they're shock collars, but Frog's statements imply they are still explosive). Frog and Pigeon shriek in fear and Frog quickly and politely changes his tune, much to Pigeon's shock. Frog tells him that there's still hope while there's a scoop. Pigeon points out that it's "While there's still life, there's hope", and Windy orders them to broadcast what they do (in the dub, Windy counts down until the scene changes).
A transparent purple orb appears, and Playmaker and Ai turn to see Spectre skidding down a rock slope. Playmaker recognizes him, and Ai asks why they're being shown Spectre and wonders who is broadcasting the footage. As Spectre looks around, Playmaker notes that this must be Lightning's doing, and Ai muses that he sees. Lightning's voice declares that he'll execute them one-by-one, and he and Jin appear before Spectre (in the dub, Lightning greets them all). Ai snarls Lightning's name, and the watching Kolter gasps that it's Jin. As Jin approaches him, Spectre muses that he never though that he'd meet Lightning in a place like this (in the dub, he claims Lightning shares his taste in dramatic entrances). Up above, Frog orders Pigeon to film this, film everything that Master Lightning does, and Pigeon sniffs miserably but he complies. Spectre asks if everyone is all right, and Lightning states that they are for now; Spectre is his first prey. Spectre muses that he sees, and the watching Varis notes that they're going after Spectre first (in the dub, he tells Spectre to eradicate Lightning). Genome tells Spectre that they're counting on him, and Alec and Klarissa watch silently. Spectre notes that if Lightning is following the same logic he demonstrated against The Shepherd, then he's decided that Spectre is the weakest member of their team. Lightning confirms that he has, and Spectre comments that it's a bit unexpected and he asks Lightning to let him pull himself together. He claims that he just has to fulfill his mission; to defeat anyone who interferes with Master Varis. Lightning notes that Spectre is a puppet who depends on Varis and gives up his free will, and that's why they're looking down on him. He clenches his fists as he claims that free will is most important, and the Ignis acquired it through trial and error and struggle. Spectre lightly tells Lightning that he misunderstands; he hasn't given up his free will; he used it to choose to obey Varis. (In the dub, Spectre instead assumes he's been chosen due to being the strongest Duelist; Lightning clarifies he sees him as the weakest. Spectre comments that Lightning is clearly mistaken, and they discuss the chances of the other winning.) Lightning seems intrigued, and Spectre comments that Lightning must have never had a difficult past, but that's natural seeing as he is only an A.I. Spectre learned that he was weak through experience and the weak coexist with the strong to protect themselves. Lightning comments that this is the wisdom of the weak, and Spectre confirms that it is; not everyone is strong and equality is only an ideal. Lightning states that A.I. can do that, and Spectre asks if he's sure. Lightning narrows his eyes as Spectre states that Lightning could do so if he was a normal A.I., but not if you have free will. They, like humans, will eventually start having silly power struggles, the fate of all creatures with free will. (In the dub, Spectre comments that they are similarly arrogant, but he grew into that personality and while humans can change like that, A.I. cannot, as they are limited by their original programming. He claims to know all about Lightning's strengths and weaknesses.) Lightning comments that he didn't expect Varis's minion to think a lot about A.I., and Spectre states that he doesn't accept their existence, but he felt an emptiness form inside him when the Ignis created from him vanished, and he remembers crying when Earth was dissected. Ai asks if Spectre means Earth, and Playmaker notes that Spectre sensed the loss of his Ignis; a part of himself. Ai asks if Playmaker just called him a part of himself, and Playmaker claims that he didn't. Spectre admits that he couldn't help thinking about the Ignis, and he declares that he knows that Lightning's the mastermind behind the Ignis, and had he just stayed quietly in the Cyberse, that Ignis wouldn't have - "Wouldn't have vanished?" Lightning asks. Varis watches as Lightning claims that's incorrect; if they'd stayed quiet in the Cyberse, would the Knights of Hanoi have left them alone? No, they wouldn't have, and so the Ignis are fighting for their survival. The A.I. are the ones who will survive, and it's Lightning's mission to make happen. Spectre respectively comments that it's hard for both of them, and Lightning declares that talking anymore is a waste of time. Spectre agrees, and Lightning suggests that they begin. Yes, let's, Spectre says politely, and they both call "Duel!"
Lightning takes the first turn, Summoning "Armatos Legio Gladius" and activating its effect, adding "Armatos Colosseum" from his Deck to his hand. He then activates the Field Spell Card, which bursts out of the ground around him and Spectre. As Spectre looks around, intrigued by the sight, Lightning explains that since he activated "Armatos Colosseum" he can add "Armatos Legio Speculata" from his Deck to his hand (he does not specify this in the dub, but visibly adds "Speculata" to his hand). He chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" and sets "Gladius" to Link Summon the Link-1 "Armatos Legio Decurion". He activates the effect of "Armatos Colosseum", sending a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to his Graveyard to Special Summon a different one to the zone that "Decurion" points to in Defense Position. Lightning rises into the air as he sends "Armatos Legio Sica" from his hand to the Graveyard and Special Summons "Gladius" to the zone that "Decurion" points to. Then he activates the effect of "Speculata" from his hand, sending another "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the Graveyard ("Armatos Legio Scutum") to Special Summon "Speculata". He chants "Come forth again! The circuit that guides the light!" and sets "Gladius" and "Speculata" to Link Summon the Link-2 "Armatos Legio Centurion". Ai notes that Lightning is expanding quickly (in the dub, he claims Lightning is using the same combo he did against The Shepherd). Lightning the activates the effect of "Armatos Colosseum" again, sending an "Armatos Legio" in his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon "Gladius" and "Sica" to the zones that "Centurion" points to, and again he chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" and sets "Gladius" to Link Summon another Link-1 "Decurion". Spectre smiles, and Lightning then chants "Appear! The three arrows that judge the world!" as he activates the Link Spell Card, "Judgment Arrows".
Varis notes that "Judgment Arrows" has appeared, and he watches as Spectre comments that Lightning is going all out with a Link Spell and four monsters, but now his hand is empty, so has he finished his preparations? (In the dub, he assumes that Lightning is finished.) Lightning replies that his turn isn't over yet, and he chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" He explains that the Summoning conditions are two "Armatos Legio" monsters, including a Link Monster, and he sets "Sica" and "Centurion" to Link Summon the Link-2 "Armatos Legio Primi Ordines". He activates the effect of "Primi Ordines", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his Graveyard, reviving "Gladius". Once again, Lightning chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" and declares that the Summoning conditions are two "Armatos Legio" monsters, including a Link Monster as he sets "Gladius" and his second "Decurion" to Link Summon the Link-2 "Armatos Legio Pilus Prior". Lightning explains that when "Pilus Prior" is Link Summoned, he can banish a card from his Deck for every co-linked monster, and add them to his hand on his next turn. He banishes three cards - "Armatos Legio Galea", "Armatos Legio Magica Alcum", and "Armatos Lex", and then he activates the other effect of "Pilus Prior", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his Graveyard. He revives "Gladius" again, and Spectre gasps in shock as he realizes what Lightning is planning to do. He comments that this is what Lightning was planning from the start. Lightning agrees, and for the final time he chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" He explains that the Summoning condition is a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio", and he sets "Gladius" to Link Summon a third Link-1 "Decurion".
Varis realizes what has happened, and Playmaker declares that it's an Extra Link (in the dub, he does not say so immediately, but tells Ai to look at the field). Ai protests that it's impossible, but then he realizes - "Judgment Arrows" is connecting all of Lightning's Link Monsters. The five cards glow with a bright light, and Playmaker notes that both Extra Monster Zones have been filled, effectively sealing away Spectre's Extra Deck and preventing him from Link Summoning on his next turn. Blue Maiden notes that Spectre's in trouble from the first turn, and Aqua adds that this is Lightning's true strength. Pigeon gasps that this is crazy, and Frog agrees; are they going to film Playmaker's team losing? Lightning ends his turn, and he comments that he's already analyzed Spectre's Deck and determined that it's dangerous if he Summons a Link Monster, so he's crushed that possibility. But Spectre is ecstatic, praising Lightning's Dueling tactics even though he's his enemy. To show Lightning his respect, Spectre will defeat him with all his strength (in the dub, Spectre claims that humans have a saying; "Nobody's perfect", and that applies to even Lightning). Lightning asks if Spectre thinks he can turn this battle around, and Spectre confirms that he does. Alec notes that Spectre's Deck relies on Link Monsters, so he can't win unless he breaks his opponent's Extra Link. Genome asks if there is a way to do that, and Klarissa states that they'll have to trust Spectre.
Spectre declares his turn and draws, then he Summons "Sunseed Genius Loci" and Special Summons "Sunseed Shadow" from his hand since he controls a Plant Normal Monster. He comments that he's assembled his monsters, but he can't Link Summon because the Extra Monster Zones are filled. Lightning declares that his data was correct; Spectre's monsters with ATK are all in his Extra Deck and since the Extra Monster Zones are filled, Spectre cannot Summon them. Lighting tells Spectre to accept his defeat, but Spectre refuses. He claims that he felt an affinity for Lightning after seeing his Duel against The Shepherd, much to Lightning's confusion. Spectre claims that Lightning's Deck is structured similarly to his own as his most powerful card is "Judgment Arrows". Spectre wishes that he had a card like that, but he doesn't. Lighting asks what Spectre is trying to say, and Spectre simply states "This." (In the dub, Spectre notes that if Lightning's analysis is correct, then he determined the same result himself and has since changed his strategy, using "Judgment Arrows" as an example. Lightning points out that Spectre doesn't have a "Judgment Arrows", and Spectre agrees that he doesn't, but he does have this).
He pays 800 LP to activate the Continuous Spell Card "Sunvine Plunder", allowing him to take control of a Spell Card Lightning controls. Vines emerge from "Sunvine Plunder" and ensnare "Judgment Arrows", moving it to Spectre's side of the field. Lightning gasps "What?!" in shock, and Spectre claims that this is how he does things; he steals what he doesn't have. The vines place "Judgment Arrows" and then disappear, and Varis praises Spectre's idea. Ai asks if Spectre seriously did that, and Playmaker comments that he sees; it's simple, but effective. Spectre declares that his and Lightning's strategies are similar, so he though his Deck would become more powerful if he stole "Judgment Arrows". Lightning comments that he sees, and he admits that he never thought they'd be equals. Spectre tells Lightning it's because he's arrogant, claiming that he can sense these things due to having lived through struggles; Lightning's arrogance comes from a complex, a secret he never told anyone. Lightning scowls, and Spectre comments that he must have hit the bullseye if Lightning isn't answering (in the dub, Lightning realizes that Spectre knew he would use "Judgment Arrows", and Spectre crows that the only thing he didn't know was that arrogance could be programmed. He claims that even a sophisticated A.I. like the Ignis is limited by its programming, and he comments that Lightning is getting upset despite this being the logical evaluation, mockingly calling him "my friend" as Lightning often does). Lightning states that he doesn't care for Spectre's probing, and Spectre politely apologizes, then notes that while he took "Judgment Arrows" from Lightning, it didn't leave the field, so unfortunately Lightning's Link Monsters won't be destroyed, but now his Extra Link has been broken and Spectre can Link Summon without using the Extra Monster Zone. Spectre chants "Appear! The future circuit that lights up our path!" and sets both of his monsters to Link Summon the Link-2 "Sunavalon Daphne", then he activates the Continuous Spell "Sunvine Shrine" by sending a card from his hand to the Graveyard since he controls a "Sunavalon" monster, discarding another "Genius Loci". He declares that the effect of "Sunvine Shrine" will allow him to Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Plant Normal Monster from his Graveyard. He Special Summons "Genius Loci", then chants "Appear! The future circuit that lights up our path!" again, declaring that the Summoning condition is one Plant Normal Monster and Link Summoning the Link-1 "Sunvine Thrasher". As it is linked to a "Sunavalon" Link Monster, it gains 800 ATK times the Link Monster's Link Rating, and since "Daphne" is Link-2, "Thrasher" gains 1600 ATK, rising to 2400.
Spectre then declares battle, ordering "Thrasher" to attack "Decurion", and the effect of "Judgment Arrows" activates, doubling the ATK of "Thrasher" to 4800. Lightning activates the effect of "Primi Ordines", reducing the damage by 1000 for every co-linked card. There are four, so the damage is reduced by 4000, but Spectre notes that Lightning's monster will still be destroyed. "Thrasher" cuts "Decurion" down and destroys it, and Spectre then activates its effect, Special Summoning the destroyed "Decurion" to a zone that a "Sunavalon" points to. "Decurion" appears from a swirl of leaves generated by "Thrasher", and Spectre wastes no time in attacking the other "Decurion" with his. As they clash swords, the ATK of Spectre's "Decurion" is doubled by the effect of "Judgment Arrows" and it destroys Lightning's "Decurion", though Lightning angrily notes that he takes no damage due to the effect of "Primi Ordines". Spectre replies that he knows, ending his Battle Phase and activating the Continuous Spell "Sunvine Cross Breed", Tributing a monster to Special Summon a Plant monster from his Graveyard with its effects negated. He Tributes "Decurion", reviving "Genius Loci" once more, then chants "Appear! The future circuit that lights up our path!" and sets "Genius Loci" to Link Summon the Link-1 "Sunavalon Dryas". He explains that it can't be attacked (in the dub, he notes that Lightning must know its effect if he's analyzed so many of his Duels), and when he takes battle or effect damage he can Special Summon a "Sunvine" Link Monster from his Extra Deck, then regain LP equal to the damage he took. Lightning flinches back in shock, and Ai gasps that Spectre has taken back the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker agrees that now the outcome is up for grabs, and Lightning growls as Spectre smiles in satisfaction.

Turn 1: Lightning
Lightning Normal Summons "Armatos Legio Gladius" (0/800). As "Gladius" was Normal Summoned this phase, Lightning activates its effect, adding "Armatos Colosseum" from his Deck to his hand, also his monsters cannot attack for the rest of this turn. He adds and subsequently activates the Field Spell "Armatos Colosseum", adding an "Armatos Legio" monster from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Armatos Legio Speculata". Lightning sets "Gladius" in the Link Arrow to Link Summon "Armatos Legio Decurion" (1000/↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. Lightning activates the effect of "Colosseum", sending a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the GY, then targeting an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster he controls to Special Summon as many "Armatos Legio" monsters as possible with different names from each other and the monster sent to the GY to activate this effect in Defense Position to his zones that Link Monster points to. He sends the Level 1 "Armatos Legio Sica" and targets "Decurion" to Special Summon "Gladius" (0/800) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Decurion" points to. Turn 2: Spectre
Spectre Normal Summons "Sunseed Genius Loci" (0/600). As Spectre controls a Plant Normal Monster, he Special Summons "Sunseed Shadow" (0/???) from his hand by its own effect. Spectre pays 800 LP to activate the Continuous Spell "Sunvine Plunder" (Spectre: 4000 → 3200 LP), targeting a face-up Spell Lightning controls and taking control of it. He targets and takes control of "Judgment Arrows", placing it in his middle-most Spell & Trap Zone. As Spectre controls a "Sunavalon" monster, he sends a card from his hand to the GY to activate the Continuous Spell "Sunvine Shrine". He sends "Genius Loci". Spectre activates the effect of "Shrine", targeting a Level 4 or lower Plant Normal Monster in his GY to Special Summon it. He targets and Special Summons the Level 1 "Genius Loci" (0/600). Spectre sets "Genius Loci" in the Link Arrow to Link Summon "Sunvine Thrasher" (800/↓) to the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Daphne" points to. As "Thrasher" was Special Summoned, Spectre activates its effect, targeting a "Sunavalon" Link Monster that points to it and increasing its ATK equal to that monster's Link Rating times 800. He targets the Link-2 "Daphne" and increases the ATK of "Thrasher" by 1600 ("Thrasher": 800 → 2400 ATK). "Thrasher" attacks "Decurion". At the start of the Damage Step, as "Thrasher" is battling Lightning's monster, Spectre activates its effect, if Lightning's monster is destroyed by this battle and sent to the GY, Spectre Special Summons it to his zone his "Sunavalon" Link Monster points to. As a Link Monster "Judgment Arrows" points to is battling, its effect makes that monster's ATK become double its current ATK during damage calculation only ("Thrasher": 2400 → 4800 ATK). The effect of "Primi Ordines" reduces any battle damage Lightning would take by 1000 for every co-linked monster he controls. Lightning controls four co-linked monsters ("Primi Ordines", "Pilus Prior", and two copies of "Decurion"), so battle damage is reduced by 4000. The attack continues and "Decurion" is destroyed, then Spectre Special Summons "Decurion" (1000/↓) to the zone the middle-left Link Arrow of "Daphne" points to. Spectre's "Decurion" attacks Lightning's "Decurion". As a Link Monster "Judgment Arrows" points to is battling, its effect makes that monster's ATK become double its current ATK during damage calculation only ("Thrasher": 1000 → 2000 ATK). Lightning controls two co-linked monsters ("Primi Ordines" and "Decurion"), so the effect of "Primi Ordines" reduces battle damage by 2000. The attack continues and Lightning's "Decurion" is destroyed. Spectre activates the Continuous Spell "Sunvine Cross Breed" and activates its effect, Tributing a Link Monster to Special Summon a Plant monster from his GY, but its effects are negated. He Tributes "Decurion" to Special Summon "Genius Loci" (0/600). Spectre sets "Genius Loci" in the Link Arrow to Link Summon "Sunavalon Dryas" (0/↓) to the Extra Monster Zone.
