"The Ultimate Connection", known as "Chain Destruction" in the Japanese version, is the eighty-seventh episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on January 30, 2019, and aired in Canada on October 4, 2020.
Specter was able to use "Judgment Arrows" to his advantage and destroy Lightning's Extra Link, turning the tide of the Duel in his favor. With his "Sunavalon" towering over the field, Specter launches a fierce attack against Lightning, and does everything he can to carry out the Knights of Hanoi's mission to destroy the Ignises.
Summary
In the canyon in Mirror LINK VRAINS, Pigeon calls the Duel between Lightning and Specter crazy; Lightning appeared to have the advantage, but Specter turned it around. Frog wonders if Specter - on 3200 LP - will be the one who will save them, but Pigeon reminds him that he's a Knight of Hanoi and Frog admits that he's right (in the dub, Frog cites that a fun fact is that Specter might be even better than Varis, though Pigeon believes this is neither fun nor a fact). Lightning - on 4000 LP - remarks that Specter broke his formation and admits to underestimating Specter. Varis, Blue Maiden, Aqua, Soulburner, Flame, Playmaker and Ai all watch as Specter agrees, adding that Lightning should be feeling regret right now if he's capable of it, along with his defeat (in the dub, Specter instead accuses Lightning and the Ignis of lacking gut instinct). Lightning scowls, declares his turn, and has Jin draw for him, then adds the three cards that he banished on his last turn with the effect of "Armatos Legio Pilus Prior" to his hand ("Armatos Legio Galea", "Armatos Lex", and "Armatos Legio Magica Alcum"). Ai admits that he's never seen Lightning annoyed before, and Playmaker notes that Lightning can't stay calm seeing as he lost "Judgment Arrows" and his Extra Link was destroyed. Ai admits that it's best if both Specter and Lightning lose, but admits that he can't be greedy, so he urges Specter to win. (In the dub, they instead discuss Lightning's chances; Ai notes that after him, Lightning is the most likely to make his way out of a situation like this.)
Lightning activates the Spell Card "Armatos Replacement", Tributing an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster to Special Summon one with an equal or lower Link Rating from his Graveyard. He Tributes the Link-2 "Pilus Prior" and revives the Link-2 "Armatos Legio Centurion", then activates the effect of the Field Spell Card "Armatos Colosseum", causing the walls of the colosseum to glow yellow. He sends a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the Graveyard, then Special Summoning as many Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monsters from his Graveyard as possible in Defense Position to the zones his "Armatos Legio" Link Monster points to, discarding "Galea" and reviving "Armatos Legio Sica" and "Armatos Legio Scutum". He chants "Appear! The circuit that guides the light!" and declares that the Summoning conditions are at least two "Armatos Legio" monsters, setting "Armatos Legio Primi Ordines" and "Armatos Legio Sica" to Link Summon the Link-3 "Armatos Legio Legatus Legionis". Lightning activates the effect of "Legatus Legionis", sending a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster to the Graveyard to Special Summon one with a different name. He sends "Scutum" to the Graveyard and revives "Galea" to the zone "Legatus Legionis" points to, then ends his turn. Ai comments that Lightning has strengthened his defenses, and wonders if Lightning will do what he thinks he will. Playmaker points out that the don't know what the "Armatos Legio" Deck is capable of, so they can't make predictions.
Specter declares his turn and draws (in the dub he mocks Lightning for not attacking), then Summons "Sunseed Twin" and activates its effect as it was Summoned, Special Summoning a Plant Normal Monster from his Graveyard. He revives "Sunseed Genius Loci", then chants "Appear! The future circuit which lights up my path!" and explains that the Summoning conditions are at least two Plant monsters, including a Link Monster, setting "Sunseed Twin", "Sunvine Thrasher" and "Sunseed Genius Loci" to Link Summon the Link-3 "Sunavalon Melias". He activates its effect as it was Link Summoned, Special Summoning a Plant monster from his Graveyard in Defense Position to a zone it points to, reviving "Genius Loci" again. Lightning scowls, and Specter chants "Appear again! The future circuit that lights up our path!", setting "Genius Loci" and "Sunavalon Daphne" to Link Summon a second Link-3 "Sunavalon Melias". Again he activates the effect of "Melias", resurrecting "Genius Loci", and again he chants "Appear! The future servant that lights up our path!" and declares that the Summoning condition is one Plant Normal Monster, setting "Genius Loci" to Link Summon the Link-1 "Sunvine Thrasher". Its effect activates as it is linked with a "Sunavalon" monster, gaining 800 ATK times that monster's Link Rating. "Melias" is Link-3, so "Thrasher" gains 2400 ATK, rising to 3200. Playmaker adds that the effect of "Judgment Arrows" will also increase the ATK of "Thrasher", and Lightning muses that this is Specter's plan and decides to deal with it. He activates the effect of "Legatus Legionis", sending "Galea" to the Graveyard and Special Summoning "Scutum".
Specter orders his Battle Phase, and he activates the effect of "Melias", giving the "Thrasher" it points to the ability to attack a number of times equal to the number of "Sunavalon" Link Monsters on the field, so it can attack three times. Lightning clenches his fists and growls in fury, and Pigeon gasps that three attacks from a 6400 ATK monster will be big. Frog comments that this will end it, right? "Thrasher" attacks "Legatus Legionis", and Lightning activates the effect of "Centurion", negating an attack targeting an "Armatos Legio" monster. "Centurion" generates a blue energy shield, blocking "Thrasher's" sword strike. Specter just attacks "Legatus Legionis" again, and due to the effect of "Judgment Arrows" its ATK is doubled to 6400. Playmaker repeats the ATK value, and Ai adds that the difference in ATK is 4000, so Specter will win if the attack succeeds (in the dub, Playmaker states that it's enough damage to end the Duel). But Lightning reveals that the effect of the "Galea" sent to the Graveyard will reduce any battle damage he would take from battles involving the "Armatos Legio" Link Monster that was linked to it to zero, and the effect of "Scutum" prevents the "Armatos Legio" Link Monster linked to it from being destroyed by battle once per turn. "Scutum's" shield glows yellow and transfers to "Legatus Legio", just in time to block the attack of "Thrasher", whose ATK returns to normal. Ai groans in disappointment that Lightning was able to stop the attack, and Specter orders his third attack, with the ATK of "Thrasher" doubling again due to "Judgment Arrows". Lightning reminds Specter that the effect of "Galea" will reduce the damage to zero, though Specter declares that "Legatus Legionis" will still be destroyed. "Thrasher" swings its leaf-shaped blade, finally cutting through "Legatus Legionis's" sword and bisecting it, destroying it in a flash of light. Ai comments that it's about time after all of that, and Playmaker notes that this destruction is important. Specter activates the effect of "Thrasher" as it destroyed a monster in battle, Special Summoning it to a zone that a "Sunavalon" monster points to. "Legatus Legionis" appears, and Specter orders it to attack "Centurion". It leaps forwards, destroying "Centurion" and reducing Lightning to 3300 LP as he groans. Specter admits that now the battle is over, but he still has something left to do.
He activates the effect of the Continuous Spell Card "Sunvine Cross Breed", Tributing a Link Monster to Special Summon a Plant monster from his Graveyard with its effects negated. He Tributes "Thrasher", and resurrects "Sunavalon Daphne" between his two "Melias". Then he activates the effect of "Sunvine Shrine", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower Plant Normal Monster from his Graveyard. He resurrects "Genius Loci" once again, then chants "Appear! The future circuit that lights up our path!" and triumphantly declares that the Summoning condition is one Plant Normal Monster, setting "Genius Loci". Playmaker realizes what Specter is doing, and Ai asks if it's possible (in the dub, he hasn't realized what Specter is doing) as Specter Link Summons another Link-1 "Sunvine Thrasher". Lightning snarls as he leans forwards, and Blue Maiden cries that Specter now has the Extra Monster Zones (Playmaker is the one to say this in the dub), while Aqua, Kolter, Soulburner and Flame all watch in shock as Specter's shoulders heave with laughter. Lightning snarls in frustration - all of Specter's monsters are co-linked, and Varis declares that Specter has reversed the Extra Link.
Specter activates the effect of "Thrasher" as it is linked with a "Sunavalon", increasing its ATK by 800 times its Link Rating. "Melias" is Link-3, so "Thrasher" gains 2400 ATK, bringing it up to 3200. Specter claims that he rewatched Varis and Playmaker's Duel at the Tower of Hanoi countless times, which was where he saw the Extra Link, a field that epitomized Link Summoning. It was beautiful, is there any field more beautiful? That sight was burned into his eyes, and now he's been able to create that perfect field with his own hands. He gasps in pleasure, and he tells the Light Ignis that it's the only thing that he'll thank him for and Lightning scoffs (in the dub, he notes that because Lightning went and created an Extra Link before he did, Specter must go even further). Specter activates the effect of "Sunseed Shadow" from his Graveyard, banishing it to target an Extra Linked Link-2 or lower Plant Link Monster. He targets "Daphne", and explains that he can Special Summon another copy of the targeted monster from his Extra Deck so that it is Extra Linked. Another "Daphne" erupts out of the ground, and Playmaker gasps in shock. Varis smiles in satisfaction, declaring that this is what even he couldn't accomplish: an Ultimate Extra Link. All seven of Specter's monsters are Extra Linked, and Ai gasps that Specter finally surpassed Varis. Specter chants "Appear again! The future circuit that lights up our path!" and declares that the Summoning conditions are at least two Plant monsters, setting "Dryas" and "Daphne" to Link Summon the Link-3 "Sunavalon Dryanome". "Dryas" swells into "Dryanome", and Lightning declares that Specter has brought out his ace monster. Specter explains that "Sunavalon Dryanome" can't be attacked, and since he used a "Sunavalon" Link Monster to Link Summon it, it gains multiple effects. Lightning irritably replies that he knows; three times per turn if Specter takes damage, he can Special Summon "Sunvine" Link Monsters from his Extra Deck to zones a "Sunavalon" Link Monster points to and regain LP equal to the damage he took. Specter confirms that he's right, and adds that if Lightning attacks a monster that "Dryanome" points to, Specter can negate the attack by moving that monster to a different Main Monster Zone. He activates the effect of "Sunseed Twin" from his Graveyard, banishing it and a Link Monster he controls to Special Summon "Thrasher" from his Graveyard. He banishes "Legatus Legionis", Special Summoning "Thrasher" in its place, and "Thrasher" activates its effect, gaining 2400 ATK. Ai states that now Specter's field is perfect, and Frog agrees that you don't see this often, while Pigeon calls it a huge scoop.
Lightning scoffs, commenting that Specter called himself weak, but he's very flashy. Specter humbly agrees that he got a little to excited in creating this beautiful field, and Lightning muses that he sees; humans this this field is beautiful. Specter comments that it's sad that Lightning doesn't understand this beauty; is what he's hiding linked to this lack of aesthetics? Lightning's brow furrows and he ominously warns Specter that he's the one who's arrogant; he thinks he knows him? He orders Specter to stop looking down on him. (In the dub, Specter chides Lightning for thinking that he'd be weaker than Frog and Pigeon, though Lightning states that he's never seen them Duel, so logically they could potentially be stronger than Specter. Specter then judges Lightning by the same criteria; he is defeating the "weaker" Duelists because he himself is weak. This taunt gets to Lightning, who snarls that it isn't logical at all.) Varis watches silently as Ai gasps that he's never seen Lightning act like this. Specter comments that this is nice; he's never seen Lightning act emotional before. Lightning retorts that Specter's field is only beautiful in the sense of a tower built on sand, and Specter is surprised, asking Lightning if he thinks he can destroy this field. (In the dub, Specter chides Lightning for his outburst, claiming they are merely having a delightful conversation and calling him his friend. Lightning for the first time seethes that they are not, and he isn't Specter's friend; Specter suggests that Lightning make his move.)
Lightning furiously declares his turn and draws, and he rises into the air, asking Specter if he thinks that he's stupid. Does Specter think that Lightning didn't know that he would try to steal his "Judgment Arrows"? Specter flinches backwards in shock, and Lightning declares that he'll unleash divine judgment on this arrogant human. He chants "The sword of light that slices the heavens!" and he and Jin gesture in unison as he activates the Spell Card "Judgment Sword". When only Specter has Link Monsters in the Extra Monster Zone, Lightning can banish one of them and then Special Summon an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster from his Extra Deck with the same Link Rating, before Special Summoning the banished monster to Specter's Main Monster Zone. Specter gasps in shock, and a sword of lightning blasts out of the card as Lightning declares that he's banishing "Sunavalon Dryanome". The blade of lightning splits "Dryanome" down the middle and disintegrates it in an instant as Specter gapes in shock. Lightning comments that Specter's cherished mother tree might be invincible against attacks, but it isn't against effects. Specter furiously asks how dare Lightning do that to his mother tree and he warns Lightning that his field isn't broken yet as the smoke clears. Lightning then Special Summons "Armatos Legio Tribunus Militum", and the banished "Dryanome" is Special Summoned to Specter's Main Monster Zone. Then Lightning activates the effect of "Armatos Colosseum", sending the "Armatos Legio Magica Alcum" in his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon "Armatos Legio Speculata", "Gladius" and "Sica" in Defense Position to the zones that "Tribunus Militum" points to. He chants "Come forth! The circuit that guides the light!" and declares that the Summoning conditions are at least three "Armatos Legio" monsters, setting "Scutum", "Spica", "Gladius" and "Speculata" and chanting "Appear! The commander that advances on the chaotic network battlefield! Link Summon! Link-4 Armatos Legio Magnus Dux!" ("Bear witness to the commander who leads the might of the military! I Link Summon! Link-4, Armatos Legio Magnus Dux!" in the dub).
"Magnus Dux" appears with 3000 ATK, and Ai gasps that it's huge. Playmaker observes that it's Lightning's Link-4 monster (in the dub, he calls it trouble for Specter). Lightning explains the effect of "Armatos Legio Magnus Dux"; once, for every co-linked monster, he can return cards from their field or Graveyard to their hands. Specter gasps in intrigue, and Playmaker muses that he sees, and Ai adds that Lightning will return "Judgment Arrows" to his hand. Specter states that Lightning can't target "Judgment Arrows"; the effect of the "Sunvine Plunder" that he stole it with prevents Lightning from targeting either card with card effects. "Unless I do this," Lightning declares calmly. He activates the effect of "Tribunus Militum", targeting a Link Monster it points to and negating the effects of cards on the field equal to that monster's Link Rating. He selects the Link-4 "Magnus Dux", negating the effects of "Shrine", "Plunder", "Cross Breed", and "Dryanome". Specter grits his teeth as Lightning asks how this is; now he can activate the effect of "Magnus Dux" (in the dub, Lightning taunts Specter over his frustration). "Magnus Dux" glows as the rider lowers his scepter and the elephant raises its trunk as Lightning declares that "Magnus Dux" is co-linked with one monster, so he will return "Judgment Arrows" to his hand. The Link Spell Card transforms into an arrow of light and returns to Jin's hand, and Lightning declares that now that he has reclaimed "Judgment Arrows", a chain of destruction will start on Specter's field. He tells Specter to watch as he pulverizes the artistic field he created, clenching his fist. (In the dub, he asks if Specter never considered how easy it was to steal "Judgment Arrows" and tells him that his arrogance will cost him.)
When "Judgment Arrows" leaves the field, all of the monsters it pointed to are destroyed. Both "Melias" and then "Daphne" explode into dust, and Specter screams "My field!" ("This can't be happening!" in the dub). Then, since Specter's "Thrashers" aren't in zones that a "Sunavalon" points to, they're destroyed. Both "Thrashers" disintegrate, and Varis and Ai gasp that Specter's field was destroyed instantly. Lightning the activates the Link Spell Card, chanting "Appear! The three arrows that judge the world! Judgment Arrows!" He cruelly declares that he'll destroy "Dryanome" next, and declares his Battle Phase, ordering "Magnus Dux" to attack "Dryanome" (before attack declaration Lightning teasingly ask Specter for "any last words" in the dub). "Magnus Dux" fires both of its mounted cannons, and Lightning adds that the effect of "Judgment Arrows" will double its ATK. "Magnus Dux" rises to 6000 ATK as the cannon-blasts twist towards "Dryanome" and Specter watches open-mouthed, Lightning impassive as the blasts tear into "Dryanome's" trunk and incinerate her as she screams, blasting the screaming Specter backwards, and he lands on his stomach as his LP falls to zero (the close-up of "Dryanome" is cut from the dub). Varis screams his name, and Specter looks up and apologizes to Varis as Lightning and Jin approach him (in the dub, Specter claims that he may have failed, but Varis will stop Lightning. Lightning claims that Varis will meet the same fate as Specter). Lightning tells Specter to vanish, and Jin holds up his hand, glowing with light as Specter's Avatar fragments into yellow data and is absorbed into a ball of data in Jin's hand. Clarissa, Varis, Aso, Dr. Genome, Blue Maiden, Aqua, Playmaker, Ai, Soulburner and Kolter are all lost for words as Jin squeezes Specter's data, but Lightning tells him to wait, claiming that even the weak have their uses. Jin and Lightning vanish, and Frog and Pigeon dissolve as well as they yelp in shock. At Lightning's palace, Windy laughs and cheers that Lightning did it, praising him and wondering who their next victim is as he chuckles to himself.

Specter has 3200 LP and controls "Sunavalon Dryas" (0/↓) in his right-hand Extra Monster Zone, "Sunavalon Daphne" (0/←→) in his middle most Main Monster Zone, and "Sunvine Thrasher" (800/↓) in the Main Monster Zone that the middle-right Link Arrow "Sunavalon Daphne" points to, as well as "Sunvine Shrine", "Judgment Arrows", "Sunvine Plunder", and "Sunvine Cross Breed" in his Spell & Trap Zones (from the middle-left zone to the right-most zone, respectively). Lightning has 4000 LP and controls "Armatos Legio Primi Ordines" (1800/↙↑) and "Armatos Legio Pilus Prior" (2000/↑↘) in his Main Monster Zones, as well as "Armatos Colosseum" in his Field Zone.

Lightning activates the Spell "Armatos Replacement", Tributing an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster, then targeting a different "Armatos Legio" Link Monster in his GY with an equal or lower Link Rating to Special Summon it. He Tributes the Link-2 "Pilus Prior" to target and Special Summon the Link-2 "Armatos Legio Centurion" (1700/←→). Lightning activates the effect of "Armatos Colosseum", sending a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the GY, then targeting an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster he controls to Special Summon as many "Armatos Legio" monsters as possible with different names from each other and the monster sent to the GY to activate this effect in Defense Position to his zones that Link Monster points to. Specter sets "Twin", "Sunvine Thrasher", and "Genius Loci" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Sunavalon Melias" (0/←↑→) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Sunavalon Dryas" points to. As "Melias" was Link Summoned, Specter activates its effect, targeting a Plant monster in his GY and Special Summoning it in Defense Position to his zone it points to. He targets and Special Summons "Genius Loci" (0/600) to the zone the middle-right Link Arrow of "Melias" points to. He targets "Thrasher" the middle-left Link Arrow of the first copy of "Melias" points to, and as he controls three "Sunavalon" Link Monsters ("Dryas" and two copies of "Melias"), "Thrasher" can attack up to three times. "Thrasher" attacks "Legatus Legionis". As Lightning's "Armatos Legio" monster was targeted for an attack, he activates the effect of "Centurion", negating that attack. The attack of "Thrasher" is negated. "Thrasher" attacks "Legatus Legionis". As a Link Monster "Judgment Arrows" points to is battling, its effect makes that monster's ATK become double its current ATK during damage calculation only ("Thrasher": 3200 → 6400 ATK). The first time an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster Lightning controls linked to "Scutum" would be destroyed by battle, its effect prevents it from being destroyed. The attack continues and "Legatus Legionis" is not destroyed, with the effect of "Galea" reducing the battle damage Lightning would take to 0. "Thrasher" attacks "Legatus Legionis". - ↑ The card text of "Tribunus Militum" states it has to target cards on the field to negate, however it was not possible to have targeted "Sunvine Plunder" in this case by the effect of "Plunder" preventing it from being targeted by Lightning's card effects. Instead, the cards on the field were able to be negated without being targeted.
