"Ignis Unification Plan" is the ninety-seventh episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on April 10, 2019.

Varis reveals the truth about a simulation of the future of both Ignis and humans, according to which both will be destroyed as result of Lightning's actions. Varis has also gained the upper hand in the Duel, and brings out a new "Borreload". However, Lightning then uses an underhanded tactic.

Featured Duel

Duel continues from the previous episode

Varis has 4000 LP and controls "Borreload Dragon" (3000/←↙↘→) in the Extra Monster Zone, as well as "Boot Sector Launch" in his Field Zone. Lightning has 4000 LP and controls "Armatos Legio Plumbum Trident" (2200/↖↑↗) in his Extra Monster Zone, as well as "Armatos Colosseum" in his Field Zone and "Armatos Gloria" in his Spell & Trap Zone.

Turn 2: Varis
Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", targeting one other monster on the field and reduce its ATK/DEF by 500; his opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to this effect's activation. He targets "Armatos Legio Plumbum Trident" ("Plumbum Trident": 2200 → 1700 ATK). "Borreload" attacks and destroys "Plumbum Trident" (Lightning: 4000 → 2700 LP). Since "Plumbum Trident" was destroyed by battle, Lightning activates its effect, allowing him to add "Judgment Arrows" from his Deck or GY to his hand, then he can place "Plumbum Trident" in his Spell & Trap Zone as a Link Spell, but if it leaves the field, it will be banished. Varis sets a card.

Turn 3: Lightning
Lightning activates the effect of "Plumbum Trident": once per turn, if it is in the Spell & Trap Zone by its own effect, Lightning can return 1 Link Monster from his GY to his Extra Deck, and then Special Summon 1 "Armatos Legio" Link Monster from the GY to a Main Monster Zone "Plumbum Trident" points to. He returns "Armatos Legio Decurion" from his GY to his Extra Deck and Special Summons "Armatos Legio Centurion" (1700/←→) from his GY to the Main Monster Zone the Top-Right Link Arrow "Plumbum Trident" points to. Lightning activates the second effect of "Armatos Colosseum", allowing him to send a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster from his hand to the GY, then target an "Armatos Legio" Link Monster he controls to Special Summon as many "Armatos Legio" monsters as possible with different names from each other and the monster sent to the GY to activate this effect in Defense Position to his Main Monster Zones that Link Monster points to. He sends "Armatos Legio Sica" from his hand to the GY, targets the "Centurion" he controls, and Special Summons "Armatos Legio Gladius" (0/800) and "Armatos Legio Segmentata" (0/2000) in Defense Position to the Main Monster Zones that the Middle-Right and Middle-Left Link Arrows of "Centurion" point to, respectively.

Lightning sets "Gladius" (a Level 4 or lower "Armatos Legio" monster) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Armatos Legio Decurion" (1000/↓) to the Main Monster Zone the Middle-Right Link Arrow of "Centurion" and the Top-Right Link Arrow of "Plumbum Trident" point to. Varis activates his set Trap "Mind Crush", letting Varis declare a card name, and if that card is in his opponent's hand, that player must discard all copies of it; however, if they don't have any copies of that card in their hand, then Varis must discard 1 random card from his hand. Varis declares "Judgement Arrows", which Lightning has one copy in his hand, therefore he is forced to discard it. Lightning sets "Segmentata", "Centurion", and "Decurion" (3 or more "Armatos Legio" monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Armatos Legio Magnus Dux" (3000/↑←↓→) to the Main Monster Zone the Top-Right Link Arrow of "Plumbum Trident" points to. Lightning activates the effect of "Segmentata" in his GY; when it is sent from the field to the GY as Link Material for a Link Summon while linked, he can pay 1000 LP (Lightning: 2700 → 1700 LP) to shuffle all of the Link Materials used for that Link Summon from his GY to his Deck, then shuffle a number of cards from his GY to his Deck equal to the Link Summoned Link Monster's Link Rating, and then his opponent must add one card from Lightning's GY to his hand. Lightning shuffles "Segmentata", "Centurion", and "Decurion" from his GY to his Deck/Extra Deck, then he shuffles "Armatos Legio Speculata", "Gladius" and 2 copies of "Sica" from the GY to his Deck, and then Varis is forced to add "Judgment Arrows" from Lightning's GY to his hand, as it is the only card in Lightning's GY. Lightning activates "Judgement Arrows" (↖↑↗) in the Spell & Trap Zone the Bottom-Center Link Arrow of "Magnus Dux" points to.

"Magnus Dux" attacks "Borreload". Varis activates the effect of "Borreload", targeting "Magnus Dux" and reducing its ATK/DEF by 500, with Lightning being unable to activate cards or effects in response to the effect's activation ("Magnus Dux": 3000 → 2500 ATK). As a Link Monster it points to is battling, Lightning activates the effect of "Judgement Arrows", doubling the current ATK of that monster during damage calculation only ("Magnus Dux": 2500 → 5000 ATK). The attack continues and "Borreload" is destroyed (Varis: 4000 → 2000 LP) ("Magnus Dux": 5000 → 2500 ATK).

Turn 4: Varis
Varis activates the effect of "Boot Sector Launch": as Lighting controls more monsters than he does, Varis can Special Summon "Rokket" monsters with different names from his GY in Defense Position, up to the difference. Lightning controls one more monster than he does, so Varis Special Summons "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200) in Defense Position. While "Boot Sector Launch" is face-up on the field, all "Rokket" monsters on the field gain 300 ATK/DEF ("Magnarokket": 1800/1200 → 2100/1500). Varis Normal Summons "Estrangement Dragon" (1500/1500) and activates its effect: since it was Normal Summoned, Varis can Special Summon another "Estrangement" from his Deck to his opponent's field in Attack Position, but it is sent to the GY at the end of this turn. If the controller of "Estrangement" controls another monster, "Estrangement" cannot be targeted for an attack.

Varis overlays "Estrangement" and "Magnarokket" (2 Level 4 DARK Dragons) to Xyz Summon the Rank 4 "Borreload eXcharge Dragon" (3000/2500, 2 ORU) in Attack Position to the Extra Monster Zone. Varis activates the effect of "Borreload eXcharge Dragon", detaching 1 Overlay Unit from it ("Borreload eXcharge Dragon: 2 → 1 ORU) to target 1 face-up monster on the field and reduce its ATK/DEF by 600, then he can Special Summon 1 "Borrel" monster from his GY, but for the rest of the turn, Varis cannot Special Summon monsters nor attack directly. He targets "Magnus Dux" on the field ("Magnus Dux": 2500 → 1900 ATK), and Special Summons "Borreload" from his GY (3000/←↙↘→). Varis activates the effect of "Borreload", targeting "Magnus Dux" and reducing its ATK/DEF by 500, with Lightning being unable to activate cards or effects in response to the effect's activation ("Magnus Dux": 1900 → 1400 ATK).

"Borreload eXcharge Dragon" attacks "Magnus Dux". Since a Link Monster it points to is battling, Lightning activates the effect of "Judgement Arrows", doubling that monster's current ATK during damage calculation only ("Magnus Dux": 1400 → 2800 ATK). The attack continues and "Magnus Dux" is destroyed (Lightning: 1700 → 1500 LP). Varis prepares to attack "Estrangement" with "Borreload". However, Lightning interferes by using Jin as a hostage, making Varis hesitate.
