"Smash and Mash", known as "Indomitable Spirit" in the Japanese version, is the one hundred and eighth episode of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime. It first aired in Japan on July 3, 2019, and aired in Canada on February 28, 2021. Following this episode the dub stopped airing on Teletoon; the next episode would air on 9Go! in Australia on August 27, 2021.

The Gore, who has recovered so that he can protect the children at the orphanage, uses his "Gouki" monsters to launch waves of attacks against Ai. However, he keeps getting knocked down by Ai's powerful monsters. Despite this, his indomitable spirit still burns bright, and he keeps getting back up to challenge Ai. Seeing The Gore like this, Ai starts talking about what it feels like to lose one's friends.

    Featured Duels

    Ai vs The Gore

Duel continues from the previous episode.

The Gore has 1200 LP and controls "Gouki Riscorpio" (2300/0) in Defense Position. Ai has 4000 LP and controls "Dark Templar @Ignister" (2300/↙↓↘) in the Extra Monster Zone on his right-hand side, and "Pikari @Ignister" (1200/600) and "Doshin @Ignister" (100/800), both in Defense Position, in the Main Monster Zones the bottom-left and the bottom-center Link Arrows of "Dark Templar" points to, respectively, and a Set card in his Spell & Trap Zone.

    Turn 3: The Gore
The Gore Normal Summons "Gouki Suprex" (1800/0). Since "Suprex" was Normal Summoned, The Gore activates its effect to Special Summon 1 "Gouki" monster from his hand. He Special Summons "Gouki Guts" (800/0) in Attack Position. The Gore sets "Gouki Riscorpio" and "Guts" (2 "Gouki" monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Gouki Heel Ogre" (1000/↑↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Riscorpio" and "Guts" were sent from the field to the GY, The Gore activates their effects, both allowing him to add 1 "Gouki" card with a different name from themselves from his Deck to his hand. The Gore activates the Normal Spell "Gouki Re-Match", allowing him to target two "Gouki" monsters with different Levels in his GY and Special Summon them both in Defense Position. He Special Summons "Guts" and "Gouki Twistcobra" (1600/0) in Defense Position, with "Guts" being Special Summoned to the Main Monster Zone the Bottom Arrow of "Heel Ogre" points to. As it was Special Summoned, The Gore activates the effect of "Guts", but as a monster "Heel Ogre" points to activated an effect, The Gore activates the effect of "Heel Ogre" to negate that effect, destroy that monster, and then Special Summon 1 "Gouki" Link Monster from his GY. The effect of "Guts" is negate and it is destroyed, and The Gore Special Summons "Gouki The Master Ogre" (2800/↑↙↓↘) from the GY. The Gore sets "Heel Ogre" and "Suprex" (2 "Gouki" monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Gouki Jet Ogre" (2000/←↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Suprex" was sent from the field to the GY, The Gore activates its effect, allowing him to add 1 "Gouki" card with a different name from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Gouki Diver". The Gore sets the Link-2 "Jet Ogre" and "Twistcobra" (2+ "Gouki" monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Gouki Thunder Ogre" (2200/↙↑↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Twistcobra" was sent from the field to the GY, The Gore activates its effect, allowing him to add 1 "Gouki" card with a different name from his Deck to his hand. He adds "Suprex". As "Jet Ogre" was sent from the field to the GY, The Gore activates its effect, increasing the ATK of all "Gouki" monsters he controls by 500 until the End Phase ("Master Ogre": 2800 ATK → 3300 ATK) ("Thunder Ogre": 2200 ATK → 2700 ATK). The effect of "Thunder Ogre" grants the turn player an additional Normal Summon during their Main Phase to a zone "Thunder Ogre" points to. The Gore Normal Summons "Suprex" to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Thunder Ogre" points to. Since "Suprex" was Normal Summoned, The Gore activates its effect, Special Summoning "Gouki Diver" (600/0) from his hand in Attack Position. The Gore sets "Diver" and the Link-3 "Thunder Ogre" (2+ "Gouki monsters) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Gouki The Powerload Ogre" (2800/↙↑↘→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As it was Link Summoned, "Powerload Ogre" is unaffected by other card effects. As "Diver" was sent from the field to the GY, The Gore activates its effect, allowing him to add 1 "Gouki" card with a different name from his Deck to his hand. "Powerload Ogre" gains ATK equal to the combined Link Rating of all other "Gouki" Link Monsters he controls x200. There is one other "Gouki" Link monster: the Link-4 "The Master Ogre" ("Powerload Ogre": 2800 → 3600 ATK). The Gore activates the Normal Spell "Gouki Face Turn", targeting 1 other "Gouki" card he controls and 1 "Gouki" monster in his GY, destroying the first target, and if he does, he Special Summons the second target from his GY. He targets and destroys "Suprex" and Special Summons "Thunder Ogre". The Gore activates the effect of "Powerload Ogre", Tributing 1 Link Monster, then targeting cards on the field equal to the Tributed monster's Link Rating, and destroy them. He Tributes the Link-3 "Thunder Ogre", and targets and destroys "Doyon @Ignister", "Pikari @Ignister", and Ai's Set "A.I.'s Hymn".

"Master Ogre" attacks and destroys "Dark Templar @Ignister" (Ai: 4000 → 3000 LP). "Powerload Ogre" attacks Ai directly, but Ai activates the effect of "A.I.'s Hymn" in his GY, banishing it to gain 200 LP for every "@Ignister" monster in his GY. He currently has 4 (Ai: 3000 → 3800 LP). The attack continues (Ai: 3800 → 200 LP). During the End Phase, the effect of "Jet Ogre" expires ("Master Ogre": 3300 → 2800 ATK).

    Turn 4: Ai
Ai activates the Quick-Play Spell "A.I.dle Reborn", allowing him to target and Special Summon 1 "@Ignister" monster from his GY. He targets and Special Summons "Doshin" (100/800) in Defense Position. Ai activates the effect of "Doshin", allowing him to target 1 "@Ignister" Link Monster in his GY and return it to his Extra Deck, and if he does, add 1 "A.I. Love Fusion" from his Deck to his hand. He targets and returns "Dark Templar" from his GY to his Extra Deck, and adds "A.I. Love Fusion" from his Deck to his hand. Ai activates the Normal Spell "A.I. Love Fusion", letting him Fusion Summon an "@Ignister" Fusion Monster, using monsters from his hand and/or field as Fusion Materials, however if the opponent controls an EARTH Link Monster(s), he can also use 1 of those monsters as Fusion Material. Ai uses "Doshin" and "The Master Ogre" as Fusion Material to Fusion Summon "Earth Golem @Ignister" (2300/1500) to the Extra Monster Zone in Attack Position ("Powerload Ogre": 3600 → 2800 ATK).

"Earth Golem" attacks "Powerload Ogre". Since "Earth Golem" is battling, its original ATK are doubled during the Damage Step only, via its own effect ("Earth Golem": 2300 → 4600 ATK). "Powerload Ogre" is destroyed ("Earth Golem": 4600 → 2300 ATK), but The Gore activates the effect of "Diver" in his GY, banishing it to reduce the battle damage he would take from that battle to 0, reduce the attacking monster's ATK by 600 ("Earth Golem": 2300 → 1700 ATK), and force it to make a second attack. "Earth Golem" attacks the Gore directly, but The Gore activates his Skill, "Pain and Gain", letting him Special Summon all "Gouki" monsters that were destroyed by battle this turn. He Special Summons "Powerload Ogre". A replay occurs and "Earth Golem" attacks "Powerload Ogre" ("Earth Golem": 1700 → 3400 ATK). The Gore activates the effect of "Gouki Double Impact" in his hand, sending it to the GY, reveal 1 Level 2 or lower "Gouki" monster in his hand to his opponent, then target 1 "Gouki" monster he controls, in order to increase the ATK of that target by the revealed monster's ATK. He reveals the Level 2 "Gouki Headbatt" and targets "Powerload Ogre"("Powerload Ogre": 2800 → 3600 ATK). As a monster he controls is battling, Ai activates the effect of "A.I.dle Reborn" in his GY, banishing "A.I.dle Reborn" from his GY and 1 "A.I." card from his hand to target 1 "A.I." Spell/Trap Card in his GY, and add it to his hand. He banishes "A.I.dle Reborn" from his GY and "Ignister A.I.Land" from his hand, in order to add "TA.I. Strike" from his GY to his hand. During Damage calculation, as an "@Ignister" monster is battling another monster, Ai activates "TA.I. Strike", making the ATK of that monster equal to that of the monster it's battling ("Earth Golem" 3400 → 3600 ATK), and if a monster is destroyed by that battle, the monster's controller will take damage equal to their destroyed monster's original ATK. "The Powerload Ogre" and "Earth Golem" are both destroyed in a Double KO, but since "Earth Golem" was Fusion Summoned this turn, its effect prevents Ai from taking any damage for the rest of the turn (The Gore: 1200 → 0 LP).

Ai Clones vs. Playmaker, Soulburner, and Varis

    Duel continues from episode 108.

An unknown amount of time is skipped. Playmaker controls "Cyberse Clock Dragon" (2500/2000) in Attack Position, Soulburner controls "Salamangreat Violet Chimera" (2800/2000) in Attack Position, and Varis controls "Borrelsword Dragon" (3000/↑←↙↓). Two of the Ai clones have 4000 LP, the other one has 1000 LP.

    Playmaker's Turn
"Cyberse Clock Dragon" attacks the Ai Clone directly. (Ai Clone: 4000 → 0 LP).

    Soulburner's Turn
"Salamangreat Violet Chimera" attacks the Ai Clone directly. (Ai Clone: 4000 → 0 LP).

    Varis' Turn
"Borrelsword Dragon" attacks the Ai Clone directly. (Ai Clone: 1000 → 0 LP).

    Ai vs Pandor

The Duel is conducted as a Master Duel.

    Turn 1: Ai
Ai Normal Summons "Pikari @Ignister" (1200/600). As it was Summoned, Ai activates its effect, allowing him to add 1 "Ignister A.I.Land" from his Deck to his hand. Ai sets "Pikari" (1 Level 4 or below Cyberse monster) in the Link Arrow to Link Summon "Linguriboh" (300/↙) to the Extra Monster Zone. Ai activates the Field Spell "Ignister A.I.Land". As he controls no monsters in his Main Monster Zones, Ai activates the effect of "A.I.Land", Special Summoning 1 Level 4 or lower "@Ignister" monster from his hand, but he can only Special Summon Cyberse monsters for the rest of the turn. Ai Special Summons "Achichi @Ignister" (800/800) from his hand in Defense Position. As he controls a Link Monster in the Extra Monster Zone, Ai Special Summons "Hiyari @Ignister" (300/400) from his hand in Defense Position, to the zone "Linguriboh" points to, via its own effect. Ai sets "Achichi", "Hiyari", and the DARK "Linguriboh" (3 Cyberse monsters, including a DARK monster) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Dark Templar @Ignister" (2300/↙↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. As he controls no monsters in his Main Monster Zones, Ai activates the effect of "A.I.Land" again, Special Summoning "Bururu @Ignister" (600/1000) in Attack Position to a Zone "Dark Templar" points to. As a monster was Special Summoned to a Monster Zone his Link Monster points to, Ai activates the effect of "Dark Templar", letting him target a Link Monster he controls, and Special Summon as many Level 4 or lower "@Ignister" monsters as possible with different names from his GY to zones that that target points to, but their effects are negated. Ai targets "Dark Templar", and Special Summons "Hiyari" and "Achichi" to the remaining zones it points to in Defense Position. Ai sets "Bururu", "Hiyari", and the FIRE "Achichi" (2+ Cyberse monsters, including a FIRE monster) in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Fire Phoenix @Ignister" (2300/←↓→) to a Main Monster Zone "Dark Templar points to. Ai activates the Normal Spell "A.I. Mine", letting him draw cards, equal to the number of Link-3 or higher "@Ignister" Link Monster he controls. He controls 2, therefore he draws 2 cards. Ai Sets 2 cards.

Duel continues in the next episode.

    Featured cards

The following cards appeared in this episode. Cards in italics debuted here.

    Yusaku Fujiki/Playmaker, Theodore Hamilton/Soulburner and Roken Kogami/Varis

    Differences in adaptations

    • In the original version, Ai admits after defeating Gore that he doesn't hate him for how he was able to recover. In the dub, he still takes revenge, but admits that he wishes he didn't have to, though he bitterly notes that he doesn't always get what he wishes.
    • When Ai challenges Pandor to a Duel in both versions, he yells "Let's take this outside!" In the Japanese version, once they are on top of the plane, he admits that he's always wanted to say that. In the dub, he simply comments to Pandor that it's a long way down.
