Yu-Gi-Oh! Japanese World Championship Qualifier 2003 participation card

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters International: Worldwide Edition National Tournament (遊戯王デュエルモンスターズ インターナショナル ワールドワイドエディション国内大会) was held on July 13, 2003 at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center, Tokyo, Japan.[1] It was conducted using the video game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters International: Worldwide Edition. There were places for up to 5000 players to register (with successful registrants selected by random draw if more than 5000 people attempted to register), but only around 3000 registered.[2][3] The top two players from the tournament won entry to the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2003, held in New York in August 2003.

In the original announcement, the card was described as "Phantom Rare" (幻のレア)—which is not the name of any rarity used in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Official Card Game—and was depicted as Ultra Rare, with its original artwork.[3] However, the distributed card was actually a Super Rare, with an edited artwork.

The same print of "Kanan the Swordmistress" was later available as the Duelist King Tournament: World Ranking Season 3 top 100 prize card in Japan and a Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2004 preliminary tournament promotional card in the United States.

Alleged other World Championship 2003 cardsEdit

Konami's official card database claims that WCS-002 "Victory Dragon" and WCS-003 "Black Luster Soldier" were also available as promotional cards for the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2003.[4] The earliest known public appearance of this claim is a post on the Pojo.biz forums in 2006 by Familiar Stranger;[5] however, later in the same thread, the same user instead referred to "Victory Dragon" as WCS-003, with no mention of the card numbered WCS-002 or "Black Luster Soldier".[6][7] There is no contemporaneous evidence these cards ever existed, nor have photographs or scans of them ever surfaced.

The Valuable Book 7 states that "Sengenjin" was available as a participation card at this tournament, but the displayed Official Proxy image has the Card Number WCS-002;[8] notably, this section also erroneously claims that the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2004 was held in Los Angeles,[8] when it was actually held in Anaheim.[9] No WCS-002 "Sengenjin" was ever printed, though it was printed with the numbers WCS-EN403 (as a Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2004 tournament promotional card) and WCS-AE403 (as a participation card at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters: Expert 3 National Tournament).
