- The term Vega (earlier Wega) arises from a transliteration of the Arabic word significant "falling" waqi, by the sentence 'النسر الواقع (an-nasr al-wāqi‘). According to sources, it can be translated by "the falling eagle", or "the diving vulture"; the constellation being represented by a vulture in Ancient Egypt and by an eagle or a vulture in Ancient India.
- Vega also designate the brightest star in the constellation of the lyre, Lyra.
- In Japan as in China, Vega is mentioned in the legend of The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd.
