Card Rulings:Against the Wind
Contents
OCG Rulings
- The effect targets 1 "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard.[1]
- It cannot target a monster with 0 ATK or ? ATK.[1]
- Taking damage equal to the ATK and adding the monster to your hand happen at the same time.[1]
Q&A Rulings
- Q: If the monster targeted by "Against the Wind" is banished by a card effect such as "D.D. Crow" activated in Chain to the activation of "Against the Wind", I cannot add the targeted monster to my hand, but do I still take damage?
- A: When resolving the effect of "Against the Wind", if the monster targeted by "Against the Wind" is no longer in the Graveyard, you do not take damage, and you do not add the monster to your hand.[2]
- Q: While "Des Wombat" is face-up, I take no damage, but even in that case, can I still activate "Against the Wind"?
- A: Yes, you can. However, if a card effect that makes you take no damage is applied at resolution, you do not take damage, and you do not add the monster to your hand.[3]
- Q: If I activate "Against the Wind" while "Black-Winged Dragon" is face-up, how does the effect resolve?
- A: If you activate "Against the Wind" while "Black-Winged Dragon" is face-up, place 1 Black Feather Counter on "Black-Winged Dragon" instead when the effect resolves. Since you did not take damage equal to the ATK of the "Blackwing" monster in Graveyard, you cannot add that "Blackwing" monster to your hand.[4]
TCG Rulings
Konami Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Konami before the introduction of Problem-Solving Card Text. Since the introduction of the new text structure, individual card rulings for the TCG are no longer issued or actively maintained.[6] They have never been formally overturned as a whole and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules and do not contradict card text. |
- “Against the Wind” targets 1 “Blackwing” monster in your Graveyard.[5]
- If you control “Des Wombat,” you can activate “Against the Wind,” but since the damage you take becomes 0, you cannot add a card to your hand.[5]
- If an effect is chained that removes the targeted monster from the Graveyard, you take no damage and do not add it to your hand.[5]
- The effects of “Against the Wind” to inflict damage and add a card to your hand are considered to be simultaneous, although as a practical matter you take the damage first. This means that you can activate effects like “Numinous Healer” without missing the timing.[5]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Black-Winged Dragon: You can still activate Against The Wind [sic] while you control Black-Winged Dragon, but you’ll place a Black Feather Counter instead of taking damage and you won’t add a “Blackwing” monster to your hand.
- Blackwing - Ghibli the Searing Wind: You cannot target Blackwing - Ghibli the Searing Wind with Against the Wind.

Rules posted online will be limited to super-complicated and really weird situations. Imagine going down to a dozen pages of card rules, instead of a thousand. It could happen.
