OCG Rulings

  • When activating just the card "Altergeist Protocol" (without activating its effect), it can be activated at any time other than the Damage Step.[1]
  • The effect "The activation and effects of "Altergeist" cards activated on your field cannot be negated." does not start a Chain.[1]
  • The "When your opponent activates a monster effect: You can send 1 other face-up "Altergeist" card you control to the GY; Negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it." effect starts a Chain. (You send 1 other face-up "Altergeist" card you control to the Graveyard when you activate this effect.)[1]
  • The effect "Negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it" does not target. This effect activates by directly chaining to the activation of the opponent's monster's effect.[1]
  • The effect which negates the activation of an opponent's monster effect and destroys it can be activated during the Damage Step. You can activate this effect in the same Chain Link as the activation of this card during the Damage Step.[1]

Q&A Rulings

A: While the effect of "Altergeist Protocol" is applying, the activations of your "Altergeist" Spell/Trap Cards, as well as the activations of "Altergeist" card effects cannot be negated.[2][3]
A: In this scenario, the effect of "Sky Striker Mecha Widow Anchor" is applied normally, negating the effects of "Altergeist Marionetter" and taking control of it until the End Phase, but since the effect of "Altergeist Protocol" is applying, the effect of "Altergeist Marionetter" that was activated is not negated, and you Set an "Altergeist" Trap Card from your Deck normally.[4][5]
  • Q: "Altergeist Protocol" is face-up in my Spell & Trap Zone, and its effect that prevents the activations and activated effects of my "Altergeist" cards from being negated is applying. In this situation, when I Special Summon "Altergeist Multifaker" and activate its effect that Special Summons an "Altergeist" monster from my Deck, but my opponent chains "Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare", what happens?
A: In this scenario, since the effect of "Altergeist Protocol" is applying, the activated effect of "Altergeist Multifaker" is not negated by "Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare", and it Special Summons an "Altergeist" monster from your Deck normally. Note that in this case, "Altergeist Multifaker" is not destroyed by "Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare".[6][5]
  • Q: "Altergeist Protocol" is face-up in my Spell & Trap Zone, and there are no monsters on my field. When my opponent declares a direct attack, can I activate the effect of an "Altergeist Kunquery" in my hand that Special Summons it?
A: Even if your opponent attacks you directly, if you have an "Altergeist" card on your field, you can activate the effect of "Altergeist Kunquery" in your hand.[7][3]
A: In this scenario, since the effect of "Altergeist Protocol" is applying, the effect of "Altergeist Marionetter" will not be negated by "Necrovalley". However, since the targeted "Altergeist Protocol" is sent to the Graveyard when resolving the effect of "Altergeist Marionetter", its effect stops applying, and "Altergeist Hextia" cannot be Special Summoned due to the effect of "Necrovalley".
Note that if this scenario occurred with "Altergeist Marionetter" being targeted with its own effect, so that "Altergeist Protocol" remained on the field throughout the resolution of the effect, the effect of "Altergeist Marionetter" resolves normally.[8][9]
