Card Rulings:Brain Research Lab
TCG Rulings
- None of the effects of “Brain Research Lab” start a Chain.[1]
- If a monster’s Type is changed to Psychic by “DNA Surgery” you can activate its effects that require a Life Point payment by placing 1 Psychic Counter on this card.[1]
- If the effects of “Brain Research Lab” are negated while it’s face-up on the field, any Psychic Counters on it are removed.[1]
- You cannot place a Psychic Counter on this card to activate an effect that you would not have enough Life Points to activate otherwise.[1]
- You cannot place a Psychic Counter on this card to activate the effect of a card like “Psychic Commander.”[1]
- You cannot place a Psychic Counter to use the effect of “Telekinetic Shocker” or other such effects that are not an effect activation that start a Chain.[1]
- If “Brain Research Lab” is returned to your hand or Deck, you will still take damage for each Psychic Counter.[1]
- You can only use the effect of “Brain Research Lab” to Normal Summon 1 Psychic-Type monster once per turn, even if you play a second copy of “Brain Research Lab.”[1]
- If you activate “Double Summon” or the effect of “Ultimate Offering” you can still activate [sic] the effect of “Brain Research Lab” to Normal Summon a Psychic-Type monster. Each effect is separate from the rest.[1]
- You must still Tribute for Level 5 or higher Psychic-Type monsters when you use the effect of “Brain Research Lab.”[1]
OCG Rulings
- No effect of "Brain Research Lab" starts a Chain.[2][3]
- If the effect of "Brain Research Lab" is negated by an effect like "Imperial Order" or "Spell Canceller", then all Psychic Counters on "Brain Research Lab" are removed.[4]
- Both players may use the effect of "Brain Research Lab" to Normal Summon a Psychic-Type monster in addition to the player's usual Normal Summon or Set. The Psychic Counter is still placed on "Brain Research Lab" when the opponent uses this effect. However, the opponent cannot use the effect of "Brain Research Lab" to place a Psychic Counter on it instead of paying Life Points to activate the effect of a Psychic-Type monster.[5]
