Card Rulings:Caius the Shadow Monarch
Contents
OCG Rulings
- This card's effect is a Trigger Effect that activates on the field. (It targets 1 card on the field. It activates mandatorily if "Caius the Shadow Monarch" is Tribute Summoned face-up.)[1]
- "banish that target" and "inflict 1000 damage to your opponent if it is a DARK monster" happen at the same time.[1]
Q&A Rulings
- Q: If a face-down DARK monster is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", is 1000 damage inflicted?
- A: Even if a face-down monster on the field is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", the banished card is banished face-up. If the banished monster is DARK, your opponent takes 1000 damage.[2]
- Q: If a Monster Token or a "Zoma the Spirit" that is treated as a monster is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", is 1000 damage inflicted?
Also, if a DARK monster treated as an Equip Card due to the effect of "Relinquished" or "Destiny HERO - Plasma" is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", is 1000 damage inflicted?
- Q: If a Monster Token or a "Zoma the Spirit" that is treated as a monster is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", is 1000 damage inflicted?
- A: If "Caius the Shadow Monarch" banishes a Monster Token, since the Monster Token disappears when it leaves the field, you do not inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.
If "Caius the Shadow Monarch" banishes a "Zoma the Spirit" that is treated as a monster, since "Zoma the Spirit" is not treated as a DARK monster while it is banished, you do not inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.
If "Caius the Shadow Monarch" banishes a DARK monster equipped to "Relinquished", since the monster is treated as a DARK monster while it is banished, you can inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.[3]
- Q: A "Plaguespreader Zombie" that was Special Summoned by its own effect is in the Monster Zone. If this "Plaguespreader Zombie" is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", how does "inflict 1000 damage to your opponent if it is a DARK monster" resolve?
Also, if this "Plaguespreader Zombie" is banished by the effect of "Chain Disappearance", how does "your opponent banishes all cards with the same name as that card(s) from their hand and Deck" resolve?
- Q: A "Plaguespreader Zombie" that was Special Summoned by its own effect is in the Monster Zone. If this "Plaguespreader Zombie" is banished by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", how does "inflict 1000 damage to your opponent if it is a DARK monster" resolve?
- A: In both cases, "Plaguespreader Zombie" is banished successfully. Therefore, the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch" inflicts 1000 damage to your opponent and the effect of "Chain Disappearance" banishes all cards with the same name as that card from your opponent's hand and Deck.[4]
- Q: Is the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch" or "Caius the Mega Monarch" activated if it is Tribute Summoned while the effect of "Imperial Iron Wall" is being applied?
- A: The effects of "Caius the Shadow Monarch" and "Caius the Mega Monarch" are Trigger Effects that activate mandatorily when they are Tribute Summoned. Therefore, their effects activate and start a Chain Link even if the effect of "Imperial Iron Wall" is being applied. However, since cards cannot be banished due to the effect of "Imperial Iron Wall", you do not target a card, and when the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch" or "Caius the Mega Monarch" resolves, its effect is not applied.[5]
TCG Rulings
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[7] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - No damage is inflicted when "Caius the Shadow Monarch's" effect removes "Zoma the Spirit" from play or removes a DARK Monster Token.
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Imperial Iron Wall: If "Caius the Shadow Monarch" is Tribute Summoned while "Imperial Iron Wall" is active, "Caius the Shadow Monarch's" effect still activates because it is mandatory, but its effect disappears when it resolves.
Judge List Rulings
- "Monarch's" effects activate at the time they are successfully Tribute Summoned. Their effects are Spell Speed 1. If the opponent wants to activate a card like "Bottomless Trap Hole", it will be placed onto the Chain with the "Monarch's" effect. But "Monarchs" don't need to remain on the field to resolve their effects, so destroying them with "Bottomless Trap Hole" will not negate their effect.[6]
