- The effect "This card returns to its owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up." is a Trigger Effect that activates only once during the End Phase of the turn "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" itself was Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. (It does not target.)[1]
- If "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is flipped to face-down Defense Position by "Book of Moon", or destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the Graveyard, etc., the effect "This card returns to its owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up." will not activate during the End Phase.[1]
- The effect "If this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent, they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." is a Trigger Effect that activates after damage calculation, when your opponent takes battle damage due to battling "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi". (It does not target.)[1]
- Even in the case that a face-down Defense Position "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is attacked by an opponent's monster, if the opponent takes battle damage, the effect "they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." will activate.[1]
- The "If either player has no cards in their hand at the start of their Draw Phase, they can draw 1 more card in addition to their normal draw." effect of "Cyber Archfiend" can be activated after the normal draw if at the start of your turn you have no cards in your hand. Therefore, if you have have 1 or more cards in your hand at the start of your turn, even if the "they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is applied, this effect cannot be activated.[2]
- After "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" inflicts battle damage to your opponent, if the Draw Phase of the next turn is skipped by a card like "Offerings to the Doomed", "they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." is not applied.[3]
- After "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" inflicts battle damage to your opponent, if during the Draw Phase of the next turn you control "Diabolos, King of the Abyss", the "they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is applied first. Then, the "During your opponent's Draw Phase, before their draw, look at the top card of their Deck, then put that card on the top or bottom of their Deck." effect of "Diabolos, King of the Abyss" is activated. (After that, the normal draw is performed.)[4]
- After "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" inflicts battle damage to your opponent, if during the Draw Phase of the next turn "Broww, Huntsman of Dark World" is discarded by by the effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" and you control "Diabolos, King of the Abyss", the "During your opponent's Draw Phase, before their draw, look at the top card of their Deck, then put that card on the top or bottom of their Deck." effect of "Diabolos, King of the Abyss" and the "If this card is discarded to the Graveyard by a card effect: Draw 1 card, plus another card if this card was discarded from your hand to your Graveyard by an opponent's card effect." effect of "Broww, Huntsman of Dark World" can be activated in a chain. As the turn player, the effect of "Broww, Huntsman of Dark World" is activated as Chain Link 1, and the effect of "Diabolos, King of the Abyss" is activated as Chain Link 2.[5]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Gemini Imps: This effect can be activated when the "If this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent, they discard all cards in their hand during the next Draw Phase, before they draw." effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is activated. When this effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is activated after damage calculation, you can chain the effect "Gemini Imps" from your hand. You cannot chain the effect of "Gemini Imps" when the "This card returns to its owner's hand during the End Phase of the turn it is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up." effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" is activated.[6]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[7] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - When your "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent, he / she discards his / her hand before drawing in their next Draw Phase. If their next Draw Phase is skipped, they discard at the start of the Standby Phase. If the Draw Phase and Standby Phase are skipped, they discard at the start of Main Phase 1.
- The opponent cannot activate any effects at the start of their turn before they discard their hand for the effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi".
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Destructive Draw: You must have no cards in your hand when you enter your Draw Phase to use this card's effect. Even if you discard your hand before you draw (due to the effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi", etc.), you cannot use this card's effect.
- Magical Blast: Note that the effect of "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi" resolves before the Draw Phase, so you could activate the effect of "Magical Blast" after his effect resolves.
- Skill Drain: If "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's" effect is activated, and then "Skill Drain" is activated later, "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's" effect is not negated and the opponent must discard his/her hand during their next Draw Phase. But if "Skill Drain" is active at the time "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's" effect activates, then the effect is negated.

Mentions in Other Rulings
- Gemini Imps: "Gemini Imps" effect cannot be activated to negate "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's" effect, because "Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's" effect activates during the Damage Step when it inflicts Battle Damage to a player's Life Points.[Out of Date 1]
Spirit monster Rulings
OCG Rulings
- The effect "During the End Phase of the turn this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face-up: Return it to the hand." is a Trigger Effect that activates once during the End Phase this card was Normal Summoned or flipped face-up. (It does not target.)[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][1][29][30][31][32]
- This effect is not activated during the End Phase if this card was changed to face-down Defense Position by the effect of "Book of Moon", or if this card was sent to the Graveyard because it was destroyed by battle or card effect.[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][1][29][30][31][32]
- The negating effect of "Alector, Sovereign of Birds" does not end during the End Phase. The effects of the targeted card remains negated during the entire turn.[33]
- Example: The effects of Spirit monsters, "Majestic Mech - Goryu", and "Jain, Lightsworn Paladin" will activate during the End Phase, but they will be negated and resolve without effect.
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been deemed unofficial by Konami.[34] They were previously considered official, but may or may not necessarily hold true nowadays. |
- The following rules apply to all Spirit monsters:[35]
- Spirit is not a monster Type; you cannot declare "Spirit" for the effect of "DNA Surgery".[35]
- Spirit monsters are still Effect Monsters.[35]
- A Spirit monster must be face-up on the field during the End Phase for it to return to the owner’s hand. If it was destroyed or removed from play, it will not return to the owner’s hand.[35]
- A Spirit monster will return to the owner’s hand during the End Phase, even if the opponent played it from their hand (through the effect of "Exchange".)[35]
Mentions in Other Rulings
- A Hero Emerges: You can Special Summon a high-level monster, like "Dark Magician", with "A Hero Emerges". But if your opponent selects a Special Summon-only monster like ... a Spirit monster, it is sent to the Graveyard.
- Conscription: If you pick up a Spirit monster, it cannot be Special Summoned so it is added to your opponent’s hand.
- Cyber Jar: Spirit monsters... are sent to your hand as they cannot be Special Summoned ...
- Dark Ruler Ha Des: ... if a Spirit monster is destroyed by a Fiend-Type monster when "Dark Ruler Ha Des" is on the field, it still cannot be Special Summoned from the Graveyard. ...
- Different Dimension Gate: When a Spirit monster is removed with "Different Dimension Gate", if it returns to play after the turn it was Summoned or Flip Summoned, it doesn't go back to the owner's hand.
- Divine Wrath: You can activate "Divine Wrath" when a Spirit monster is returned to the owner’s hand by its own effect, and the Spirit monster will be destroyed and sent to the Graveyard.
- Elemental HERO Necroid Shaman: You cannot choose to Special Summon a monster if it cannot be Special Summoned, such as a Spirit monster...
- Interdimensional Matter Transporter: If a Spirit monster is returned to the field with "Interdimensional Matter Transporter" the same turn it was Summoned or flipped face-up, it returns to the field and then returns to the owner's hand.
- Last Turn: You cannot Special Summon a monster for “Last Turn” that is a “Special Summon-only” monster like “Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End”, “Dark Necrofear”, or “Ocean Dragon Lord – Neo-Daedalus”. Nor can you select a Spirit monster because they cannot be Special Summoned.
- Legacy of Yata-Garasu: When you activate “Legacy of Yata-Garasu” while your opponent has a Spirit monster face-up on his/her side of the field and you select to activate the second effect of “Legacy of Yata-Garasu”, if your opponent chains an effect that removes the Spirit monster from the field or flips it face-down, the effect of “Legacy of Yata-Garasu” will still resolve.
- Light and Darkness Dragon: When “Light and Darkness Dragon” negates the activation of a Spirit monster’s effect that would return it to its owner’s hand, the effect of the Spirit monster activates again during the same End Phase. When the return effect of the Spirit monster is activated during the End Phase while “Light and Darkness Dragon” has less than 500 ATK and DEF, the second effect of “Light and Darkness Dragon” will still activate, but it will not be able to negate the activation and the Spirit monster will return to its owner's hand.
- Monster Gate: If you pick up a Spirit monster, you cannot Special Summon it and it is sent to the Graveyard.
- Penguin Soldier: Spirit monsters can still be returned to their owners’ hands by the effect of "Penguin Soldier" even if "Spiritual Energy Settle Machine" is in play.
- Reasoning: If you pick up a Spirit monster, then all picked up cards are sent to the Graveyard.
- Skill Drain: Spirit monsters are not returned to the owner's hand while "Skill Drain" is active.
- Spirit's Invitation: The effect of this card is applied even when a Spirit monster is returned to its owner’s hand by the effect of another card, such as "Penguin Soldier".
- Spiritual Energy Settle Machine: When this card is active, Spirit monsters on both sides of the field do not return to their owner’s hand during the End Phase of the turn they were Summoned.
- Spiritual Energy Settle Machine: When this card is active, Spirit monsters may still be returned to their owner’s hands by card effects such as "Penguin Soldier" and "Compulsory Evacuation Device".
- Spring of Rebirth: Spirit monsters are sent to the owner’s hand one at a time during the End Phase. So if you have 4 face-up Spirit monsters during the End Phase, you will gain 500 Life Points for each, totaling 2000 Life Points.
- Sword of Kusanagi: If you control your opponent's Spirit monster and you equip it with "Sword of Kusanagi", when the Spirit monster is returned to your opponent's hand and "Sword of Kusanagi" is destroyed, its second effect activates.
- Sword of Kusanagi: If you add your opponent's "Sword of Kusanagi" to your hand with "Exchange" and equip it to a Spirit monster you control, when the Spirit monster is returned to its owner's hand and "Sword of Kusanagi" is destroyed, "Sword of Kusanagi's" effect does not activate.
Notes
- ↑ The latest print of "Gemini Imps" has Problem-Solving Card Text, which does not specify that it cannot be activated during the Damage Step. Since this card negates activations (which allows cards to be activated during the Damage Step), it can be activated during the Damage Step.
