Card Rulings:Magical Merchant

OCG Rulings
- Its monster effect is a Trigger Effect that always activates when this monster is flipped. (It activates even during the Damage Step.)[1]
- The application of "add that card to your hand" and the application of "send the remaining cards to the GY" are treated as being done at the same time.[1]
- Even if there are no Spell/Trap Cards in the player's Deck, the effect always activates when "Magical Merchant" is flipped. (Excavation from the Deck is performed, but because there is no Spell/Trap Card in the Deck to add to the hand, after excavating the entire Deck, the resolution finishes with all of the excavated cards being returned to the Deck and shuffled.[1]
Q&A Rulings
- Q: If a Pendulum Monster is excavated when resolving the effect of "Magical Merchant", what happens?
- A: The effect of "Magical Merchant" excavates cards from the Deck until reaching a Spell/Trap Card. Pendulum Monsters are treated as Monster Cards while in the Deck, not Spell Cards. Therefore, Pendulum Monsters will be sent to the Graveyard by the application of "send the remaining cards to the GY".[2]
TCG Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Konami before the introduction of Problem-Solving Card Text. Since the introduction of the new text structure, individual card rulings for the TCG are no longer issued or actively maintained.[3] They have never been formally overturned as a whole and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules and do not contradict card text. |
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Dimension Fortress Weapon: If “Magical Merchant” is flipped face-up while “Dimension Fortress Weapon” is on the field, its effect is not applied.
UDE Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[4] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - You need to show the cards to your opponent, including the one you keep.
- If you pick up your entire Deck and there were no Spell or Trap Cards, then "Magical Merchant"'s effect disappears.
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Thunder King Rai-Oh: If "Crystal Seer's", "Magical Merchant's", etc. effect activates while "Thunder King Rai-Oh" is face-up on the field, the card(s) that would be added to your hand is sent to the Graveyard instead. (They are not considered destroyed)
