Card Rulings:Soul Absorption
OCG Rulings
- After the card "Soul Absorption" has been activated, the effect activates each time a card is banished and makes a Chain Link.[1]
- The effect activates even if a card is banished during the Damage Step.[1]
- The effect activates regardless of whether the player's card(s) or the opponent's card(s) are banished. (The player you gains LP is the player who activated "Soul Absorption".)[1]
- If a card(s) is banished during the resolution of a Chain or as a cost to activate an effect, the effect of "Soul Absorption" is activated after the whole Chain has resolved.[1]
- If multiple cards are banished at once by "Soul Release", after "Soul Release" resolves, the effect of "Soul Absorption" activates only once and makes a Chain Link. Consequently, with that one effect resolution, the player gain LP equal to the number of banished cards ×500. (If 5 cards were banished, the controller of "Soul Absorption" gains 2500 LP.)[2]
- If a Token Monster (such as a Sheep Token) is targeted by the effect of "Caius the Shadow Monarch", it leaves the field and disappears, and as a result it is not banished. Therefore, in this case, the effect of "Soul Absorption" is not activated.[3]
Previously Official Rulings
These TCG rulings were issued by Upper Deck Entertainment and have since been declared unofficial by Konami.[4] They were previously considered official and can still be correct, as long as they follow the official gameplay rules, or unless Konami has issued a ruling that says otherwise. - "Soul Absorption"'s effect is based on the number of cards, not on each "lump sum" of cards. So if 3 DARK monsters are removed from the Graveyard to Special Summon "Dark Necrofear", the controller of "Soul Absorption" gains 1500 Life Points.
- However, you receive the Life Points from "Soul Absorption" as a "lump sum", so in the case of "Dark Necrofear" you gain 1500 Life Points but your "Fire Princess" would only do 500 points of damage.
- "Soul Absorption" is a "trigger-like" Continuous Spell Card, not a "continuous-like" Continuous Spell Card, so activate its effect after the current chain resolves that includes removing cards from play.
- The effect of "Soul Absorption" can, itself, be chained to after it activates.
- If "Soul Absorption"'s effect activates in response to the Special Summon of a monster like "Dark Necrofear" or "Inferno", Soul Absorption's effect activates after the monster is Special Summoned.
- For "Chaosrider Gustapth" [sic], activate "Soul Absorption"'s effect after "Chaosrider Gustaph"'s effect resolves.
- Your "Soul Absorption"'s effect activates even when your opponent's cards are removed.
Mentions in Other Rulings
- Fire Princess: If you have "Soul Absorption" and "Fire Princess" face-up on the field when your opponent removes 3 monsters from his Graveyard to Summon "Dark Necrofear" you will gain 1500 Life Points and "Fire Princess"'s effect will deal 500 Damage to your opponent.
