OCG Rulings

  • The effect "Once per turn, during the Standby Phase: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 1 "Frog" monster from your Deck." is a Trigger Effect that activates on the field. (It can be activated once during each player's Standby Phase. It does not target. Also, detaching 1 Xyz Material from this card is a cost to activate this effect.)[1]
  • The effect "Once per turn, during either player's turn, when your opponent activates a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect: You can send 1 Aqua-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your field to the Graveyard; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card, then you can Set it to your field." is a Quick Effect. (It does not target. Sending 1 Aqua-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your Monster Zone to the Graveyard is a cost to activate this effect. Also, it can be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]
  • The resolution of "negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card" is always applied, but the resolution of "then you can Set it to your field." is optional. Also, the resolution of "negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that card" and the resolution of "then you can Set it to your field." are not considered to be happening at the same time.[1]
  • The effect "If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 WATER monster in your Graveyard; add it to your hand." is a Trigger Effect that activates in the Graveyard. (It targets 1 WATER monster in your Graveyard. It can be activated during the Damage Step.)[1]

Q&A Rulings

  • Q: I have 2 copies of “Toadally Awesome” on my field. During my or my opponent’s Standby Phase, how are their effects activated and resolved?
A: The effect of each “Toadally Awesome” that Special Summons a “Frog” monster from your Deck can only be activates once per Standby Phase. If you have 2 copies of “Toadally Awesome” on your field, you can activate the effect of each copy, but they will not be on the same Chain, and are activated and resolved separately.[2]
  • Q: When the second effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation is activated, can Solemn Warning be chained to it?
A: The effect of “Toadally Awesome” negates the activation of a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect, and then afterward you can Set the destroyed card to your field. If you negate the activation of a monster effect this way, Setting the monster to your field is treated as Special Summoning it in face-down Defense Position. Therefore, when your opponent activates a monster effect, or activates a Pendulum Monster as a Spell Card to their Pendulum Zone, and you activate the second effect of “Toadally Awesome” to negate the activation, Solemn Warning can be further chained.[3]
  • Q: My opponent activates "Metalfoes Silverd" from their hand as a Spell Card to their Pendulum Zone. If I chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation, what happens?
A: When a Pendulum Monster is activated as a Spell Card in the Pendulum Zone, it is treated as the activation of a Spell Card, so you can chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome”. In that case, the activated "Metalfoes Silverd" is destroyed. If you want to apply the effect that Sets the destroyed card to your field, "Metalfoes Silverd" will be Set to your Monster Zone in face-down Defense Position.[4]
  • Q: When my opponent activates the effect of "Supervise" when it is sent from the field to the Graveyard, can I chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation?
A: You can activate the second effect of “Toadally Awesome” when your opponent activates a Spell/Trap Card, or monster effect. In this scenario, the activation of the second effect of "Supervise" is not treated as a Spell Card activation, so you cannot chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome”.[5]
  • Q: My opponent activates the effect of "Sangan". If I chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation, what happens?
A: When the effect of your opponent’s "Sangan" activates in the Graveyard, you can chain the second effect of “Toadally Awesome”. In that case, the activation of the effect is negated, but "Sangan" cannot be destroyed while in the Graveyard, so you cannot then Set it to your field.[6]
  • Q: My opponent activates "Dimension Reflector" and Special Summons it as an Effect Monster. Afterward, if its effect that inflicts damage to the opponent is activated, can I chain the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation?
A: When your opponent activates the second effect of "Dimension Reflector" that has been Special Summoned as an Effect Monster, you can chain the second effect of “Toadally Awesome”. In that case, the activation of the monster effect of "Dimension Reflector" is negated, and it is destroyed. If you want to apply the effect that Sets the destroyed card to your field, "Dimension Reflector" will be Set to your Spell & Trap Zone.[7]
  • Q: When activating the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation, can I send a "Graydle Cobra" treated as an Equip Card by its own effect to the Graveyard as the cost?
A: To activate the second effect of “Toadally Awesome”, you must send an Aqua-Type monster that is either in your hand or face-up in your Monster Zone to the Graveyard. In this scenario, a "Graydle Cobra" treated as an Equip Card by its own effect is not treated as a monster, so it cannot be sent to the Graveyard to activate the effect of “Toadally Awesome”.[8]
  • Q: If a face-down Defense Position “Toadally Awesome” on my field is destroyed by battle or card effect, can I activate its effect that adds a WATER monster in my Graveyard to my hand?
A: Even if “Toadally Awesome” is in face-down Defense Position when it is sent to the Graveyard, you can activate its third effect.[9]
  • Q: Can I activate the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that adds a WATER monster in my Graveyard to my hand by targeting a WATER Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monster?
A: Yes, you can. (That same “Toadally Awesome” can also be targeted.) In that case, the targeted Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Monster is returned to the Extra Deck instead of being added to your hand.[10]
A: Even if the effect of your opponent’s "Vanity's Emptiness" is applied, you can activate the effect of “Toadally Awesome” when a monster effect is activated, to negate the activation and destroy that monster, but the part of the effect that Sets the monster to your field cannot be applied. In this scenario, the activation of the effect of "Yosenju Kama 1" is negated, and it is destroyed, but since you cannot Set "Yosenju Kama 1" to your field, it is sent to the Graveyard. (If "Vanity's Emptiness" is chained to the effect of “Toadally Awesome”, the result is the same.)[11]
A: Even if the effect of your opponent’s "Dark Simorgh" is applied, you can activate the effect of “Toadally Awesome” that negates a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect activation and destroys that card, but the part of the effect that Sets the destroyed card to your field cannot be applied. In this scenario, the activation of your opponent’s "Harpie's Feather Duster" is negated, and it is destroyed, but since you cannot Set "Harpie's Feather Duster" to your field, it is sent to the Graveyard. (If "Call of the Haunted" were chained to the effect of “Toadally Awesome”, and "Dark Simorgh" is Special Summoned, the result is the same.)[12]
