OCG Rulings

  • The effect "This card cannot be destroyed by battle. You take no Battle Damage from battles involving this card." is a Continuous Effect that is applied in the Monster Zone.[1]
  • The effect "Before damage calculation, when this face-up Attack Position card is attacked by an opponent's monster: Inflict damage to your opponent equal to that monster's ATK." is a Trigger Effect that activates in the Monster Zone. (It activates mandatorily. It activates before damage calculation during a battle in which this Attack Position card was targeted for an attack.)[1]
  • The effect "During your End Phase: Tribute 1 other monster or destroy this card." is a Trigger Effect that activates in the Monster Zone. (It activates mandatorily during each of your End Phases.)[1]
  • The effect "When this card is destroyed, except by its own effect: Its owner can Special Summon 1 "Yubel - Terror Incarnate" from their hand, Deck, or Graveyard." is a Trigger Effect that can be activated by this destroyed card. (It can be activated even during the Damage Step.)[1]
  • This effect can only be activated immediately after this card is destroyed. It cannot be activated if another effect resolution takes place after this card is destroyed, for example if this card is destroyed by a card effect activated as Chain 2 or higher.

Q&A Rulings

A: Yes, it can be activated. Destroying a monster and adding a card to your hand by the effect of "Nightmare Pain" happen at the same time. Therefore, after the Chain resolves, since nothing is considered to have happened after the destruction of "Yubel", you can activate the effect of "Yubel".[2]
A: The effect "Before damage calculation, when this face-up Attack Position card is attacked by an opponent's monster: Inflict damage to your opponent equal to that monster's ATK." of "Yubel" activates and creates a Chain Link before damage calculation, then resolves. The effect "At the start of the Damage Step, if this card battles an opponent's monster: You can return both the opponent's monster and this card to the hand." of "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" activates and resolves at the start of the Damage Step. Thus, if the effect of "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" is activated, due to that effect both "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" and "Yubel" are returned to the hand and the Damage Step ends. In this case, the effect of "Yubel" does not activate.[3]
  • Q: When resolving the effect "During your End Phase: Tribute 1 other monster or destroy this card" of "Yubel" or the effect "During your End Phase, either Tribute 1 other monster or take 1000 damage" of "Volcanic Queen", can I choose to Tribute a monster that is unaffected by monster effects?
A: Yes, you can. In that case, since that monster cannot be Tributed, the effect finishes resolving. (In the case of "Yubel", it is not destroyed. In the case of "Volcanic Queen", you do not take 1000 damage.)[4]

Previously Official Rulings

  • The owner of "Yubel" activates the effect. (If your opponent controls your "Yubel" when it is destroyed, you get the effect, not your opponent.)
