Card Tips:Hazy Flame Sphynx

  • Because of the specific wording of this card's effects, you do not have to have a FIRE monster in the hand or graveyard to activate it. You can use this to either mill a Fire monster (and then summon it if you called the card type correctly), trigger sent-to-grave effect(s) of milled cards, or expand your graveyard.
  • Once you ensure that this card's effect successfully summons a FIRE monster(s), this card has amazing synergy with "Hazy Flame Peryton", because both cards can special summon one another and/or other "Hazy Flame" monsters. Use the two together for bigger swarms.
    • "Hazy Flame Sphynx" can special summon any FIRE monster, including "Hazy Flame Peryton", despite its summoning conditions, and is the only card that can do so other than another copy of "Hazy Flame Peryton"). (Having Peryton summon copies of itself is typically inefficient/redundant because you can only use its effect once per turn.)
    • Summon Sphynx. Use it's effect to summon Peryton, and then use Peryton's effect for a total of at least 3 level 6 FIRE monsters.
    • While "Hazy Flame Hydra" is in your hand or graveyard, and you have at east one other "Hazy Flame" monster in your graveyard, summon Peryton, then use it to summon one "Hazy Flame Hydra" and one "Hazy Flame Sphynx" from your deck. (If the first "Hazy Flame Hydra" is in your hand, you can discard it for via the cost of the "Hazy Flame Peryton" effect without messing up this combo. It is even encouraged to effectively eliminate the cost altogether.) Use Sphynx to special summon the second Hydra from your hand or graveyard. Overlay into "Hazy Flame Basiltrice", and use the 2 Hydras to attach Peryton and one other "Hazy Flame" monster from your grave to Basiltrice, and she will have at least 5 Xyz materials.
      • For even more swarming, use "Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit" to tribute summon "Hazy Flame Peryton", and use Tefnuit's effect to bring out "Tyhone #2. Then follow the steps outline directly above. If everything is successful, you can use "Tyhone #2", "Hazy Flame Sphynx", and two copies of "Hazy Flame Hydra". Now overly into "Hazy Flame Basiltrice", and will hit the field with 4 Xyz materials (protecting it from being targeted by the opponent's card effects in response to its summon). Then you can attach one or even two Xyz materials to "Hazy Flame Basiltrice" as desired via the copies of "Hazy Flame Hydra". (Attaching 2 materials will make for a total of 6 Xyz materials, allowing Basiltrice to use its banishing effect once to reduce its materials to exactly 5. It will still be untargetable by the opponent with 6, but it will not gain protection from card effect destruction until the materials are reduced to exactly 5.
  • This card's effect is powerful, but costly and clumsy. You can use probability and/or a special balance of monsters, spells, and/or traps to improve the odds of you calling the card type correctly so you special summon a FIRE monster. However, the best way to solve the problem is to combo this card with cards that look at, or place cards on top of the deck. Here are some cards that do this:
  • Use this card in a Deck with a lot of monsters, preferably of the FIRE Attribute, and only Spells OR Traps (not both, or just very few of one card type). By doing so, probability can be used to correctly guess the top card of your Deck by examining your hand, field, Graveyard and banished cards.
    • Alternatively, a deck with a typical amount of monsters and lots of spells or traps (again preferably not both) also works if the deck has lots of search power for monsters. (In this case, use this card to mill cards other than monsters, preferably ones that have effects in the grave, such as "Galaxy Cyclone", "Breakthrough Skill", and "Shuffle Reborn".
  • This card is solid support for a "Brotherhood of the Fire Fist" Deck, and can even have a fairly high attack power on the field with the archetype's type-based spell/trap support.
  • If used successfully, this card combos well with Xyz monsters you control to make more extensive use of FIRE monsters.
    • Combo with "Hazy Pillar": Detach a "Hazy Flame" Monster]" used as Xyz Material from an Xyz monster, special summon the FIRE material back as a monster via "Hazy Flame Sphynx", and use "Hazy Pillar" to reattach the summoned monster as Xyz material. This can create a once per turn loop by which to abuse Xyz monster's effects. Can also be used to reuse the "on-summon" effects of any FIRE Xyz materials detached and resummoned, but will usually not create a loop as Hazy Pillar cannot be used in this case. ("Hazy Flame" Monsters usually do not have
    • "Beatrice, the Eternal Lady": A generic rank 6 monster (easily summoned in "Hazy Flame" decks) that can send multiple Fire monsters (to summon with "Hazy Flame Sphynx") and/or "Plaguespreader Zombie" (to set up the tribute summon and/or effect of "Hazy Flame Sphynx") to the grave.
    • "Number C5: Chaos Chimera Dragon": A powerful rank 6 xyz that can put a card from you grave onto your deck.
    • "Number 57: Tri-Head Dust Dragon": summon it from the Graveyard (as long as "Tri-Head Dust Dragon" was Xyz Summoned properly before it was sent there). It will still let an opponent's monster be targeted to gain its ATK when Special Summoned from the Graveyard, and "Hazy Pillar" (or a similar card) can be used to add Xyz Material to it. So if "Tri-Head Dust Dragon" is lost in a battle to a bulkier monster on the previous turn, it can be Special Summoned with that monster's ATK increase, giving it the highest atk on the field.
