Forum:"Target" effect

Hi, I would like to clarify card effects that deal with "target".

First, King Dragun: Let us say that my opponent have a King Dragun on field and some other dragon type monsters, will Gravity Bind, Swords of Revealing Light,Level Limit Area-B, Messenger of Peace and Mirror Force prevent those monsters from attacking? My argument is that those cards does not specifically "target" dragon monsters.

Second, Last Turn: based on the card rulings for King Dragun, it says that Last Turn does not "Target", but based on the definition of target in this wikia, a card which says "Select 1 monster...." is a card that targets.

Third, not related to "target" : Butterfly Dagger Elma: Again based on the rulings, it says that Elma can be destroyed by mystical space typhoon, but elma's effect is "when this card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard while equip on a monster card it can be returned to hand" so isn't that a little bit contradicting. I can agree with this ruling if for example elma is just equipped to a monster card and then your opponent countered with mystical space typhoon ( though I still doubt that this is also possible).

~~Butterflyelma~~

1) Those cards does not target so they can used to stop dragon's attacks.
2) Last Turn does not target because it selects the monster at it's resolution, not activation. Is like Magical Dimension.
3) When Butterfly Dagger - Elma is destroyed in the middle of a chain, she cannot activate her effect because she misses the timing.

Thanks for your reply, I still would like to clear something about butterfly dagger elma, 1. So Elma's effect won't work if it is "countered" by Mystical Space Typhoon upon it's activation?? 2. If Elma is equipped to a monster(let's say before the turn) you activate mystical space typhoon, will it's effect work?

from the little that I understand of Elma's effect, if you chain Mystical Space Typhoon to its activation, it will not return to the hand because its destruction was not the last thing to resolve. as for your second question, it depends on how it is destroyed. remember that Elma's destruction has to be the last thing to resolve in order for it to return to the hand. so if you equip Butterfly Dagger to your monster, and I miss my chance to activate Mystical Space Typhoon, then you later activate Pot of Greed, I can chain Mystical Space Typhoon to your Pot of Greed. the chain resolves like this:

  1. Mystical Space Typhoon Destroys Elma
  2. Pot of Greed allows you to draw two cards

note that since Elma's destruction was not the last thing to resolve, it does not return to the hand.

that's my reading of the effect, so I could be wrong. ~Specter (cow_pi) 23:33, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
