Forum:"unless card says otherwise" a ruling?

I've been discussing this with a stubborn person, and he said a trap cannot be activated on the turn it is set "unless it says otherwise".. i read the rulebook and it does not quote that, but he insists its part of the rules, can i get some clarification on this? (it is my understanding a trap cannot be activated the turn it was set period).

A trap cannot be activated the turn it was set, but that rule can be avoided by cards like "Cathedral of Nobles". ATEMVEGETA 07:51, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

-But that's the only exception right? if a card specifically says so.. the argument was about cards saying that "activate when your opponent declares an attack" and whether they can be activated the turn they are set.

If a trap card is set, she must wait 1 turn to be activate. Even if she has activation requirement, and she met it in the turn she has been set, she cannot be activated. Like if "Negate Attack" is set during the opponent's turn with "Dust Tornado", and the opponent declares an attack, "Negate Attack" cannot be activated (that turn). Also that's the reason why "Scrap-Iron Scarecrow" can only negate 1 attack per turn. ATEMVEGETA 07:55, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Sounds like the two of you are arguing semantics.

"Unless a card says otherwise" is an implied part of every basic game rule, such as hand limit, when traps spells and monsters can be played etc.

This means that unless a card specifically refers to a rule, that rule is ironclad, it's not enough for a trap *not* to say it *can't* be activated the turn it is set, either that trap or another card would have to specifically allow it, like the banned in advance card temple of kings.

from there all your friend and you have to do is read the card.
