Morphtronics

By Lappyzard

Morphtronics are a series of mostly EARTH and mostly Machine-Type monsters that debuted in Crossroads of Chaos. They do include a variety of Types and Attributes however. Their effects change based on their battle position. They resemble household objects, and are likely a reference to the Transformers series. This is strongly hinted in their Japanese name, "Deformers". They are used by Leo in the anime and to date have not had any major tournament success.

Strengths

Morphtronics are good at filling the field with a lot of monsters and generating massive card advantage. Previously, it was difficult to do anything with those cards, but with the release of Xyz Monsters the options have increased and Morphtronics' potential has exploded. They change effects based on battle position, allowing more versatility than most monsters. They have lots of OTK potential with the swarming effects of Celfon and Scopen, then ATK boosting effects of Videon and Radion, and the direct attack effect of Boarden.

Weaknesses

Morphtronic monsters alone are very weak, usually with no more than 1200 base ATK. They are very combo-heavy, and fall apart when they can't pull off their moves. Since you can't Normal Summon in face-up defense position, you usually have to use their attack position effect, and since Morphtronics are weak, you usually don't get a chance to switch them. They are extremely weak to Skill Drain. The archetype hosts enough different Attributes and Types for the deck to be weakened by Gozen Match and Rivalry of Warlords.

Card Choices

Meet the Archetype

Monsters:

  • Morphtronic Boarden In Attack Position, it allows direct attacks. In Defense Position, it stops other Morphtronics from being destroyed in battle. A key card of Morphtronic OTK. Good in Morphtronic Burn. Works with Machine Duplication.
  • Morphtronic Boomboxen In Attack Position, it can attack twice. In Defense Position, it can negate attacks. Good in Morphtronic OTK.
  • Morphtronic Cameran In Attack Position, it revives another Morphtronic when destroyed in battle. In Defense Position, it prevents Morphtronics from being targeted by effects.
  • Morphtronic Celfon In Attack Position, it lets you check a number of cards from the top of your deck equal to a die roll, and summon a revealed Morphtronic. In Defense Position, it lets you check a number of cards from the top of your deck equal to a die roll. A good card in most Morphtronic decks. Works extremely well with Machine Duplication.
  • Morphtronic Clocken In Attack Position, it gains 500 ATK for each Morph Counter on it. In Defense Position, it adds Morph Counters to itself and can Tribute itself to deal damage based on the number of Counters. A key card in Morphtronic Burn.
  • Morphtronic Datatron In Attack Position, it can Tribute a monster to deal 600 points of damage. In Defense Position, you can inflict 300 damage each turn. A key card in Morphtronic Burn.
  • Morphtronic Lantron In Attack Position, it redirects effect damage from you to your opponent. In Defense Position, it negates battle damage after being destroyed. It's a Tuner.
  • Morphtronic Magnen In Attack Position, it can only attack your opponent's strongest monster. In Defense Position, it prevents you from attacking other Morphtronics. Two creates a lock. A good card in Morphtronic Burn.
  • Morphtronic Magnen Bar In Attack Position, it borrows ATK from 2 other Morphtronics, but other Morphtronics can't attack. In Defense Position, it stops you form attacking.
  • Morphtronic Radion In Attack Position, it gives Morphtronics 800 extra ATK. In Defense Position, it gives Morphtronics 1000 extra DEF. The strongest of the Morphtronics in terms of ATK. A key card of Morphtronic OTK.
  • Morphtronic Remoten In Attack Position, it lets you Banish a Morphtronic in your Graveyard to search out another one from your deck with equal level. In Defense Position, it lets you trade a Morphtronic in your hand for one in your Graveyard. Works extremely well with Machine Duplication and Leviair.
  • Morphtronic Scopen In Attack Position, it lets you summon a Morphtronic from your hand, but it is destroyed in the End Phase. In Defense Position, it becomes level 4. It's a Tuner.
  • Morphtronic Slingen In Attack Position, it lets you Tribute a Morphtronic to destroy a card on the field. In Defense Position, it lets you destroy another Morphtronic in place of itself.
  • Morphtronic Staplen In Attack Position, it directs attacks to itself and weakens any monster that destroys it. In Defense Position, it can't be destroyed in battle, and changes the monster that attacked it to Defense Position, but changes itself to Attack Position afterwards.
  • Morphtronic Vacuumen In Attack Position, it sends its Equip Cards to the Graveyard to deal 500 points of damage for each one. In Defense Position, it lets you equip your opponent's monsters to it.
  • Morphtronic Videon In Attack Position, it gains 800 ATK for each of its Equip cards. In Defense Position, it gains 800 DEF for each of its Equip cards. A key card of Morphtronic Equip.

Spells:

  • Double Tool C&D The primary Equip Spell of Equip Morphtronics, this card gives the Equipped monster 1000 ATK during your turn and shuts down opposing effects during the Battle Phase. On your opponent's turn, they can't attack any other monster, and if the Equipped monster is attacked, the attacking monster is destroyed.
  • Factory of 100 Machines This is a weak ATK-boosting card the empties your Graveyard. It's bad.
  • Junk Box This card revives a Morphtronic, but destroys it in the End Phase. Just use it to Xyz or Synchro and it's like Monster Reborn.
  • Morphtronic Accelerator This card returns a Morphtronic to from your hand to your Deck to destroy 1 card on the field and draw 1 card. It's slightly better than a generic one for one, but also a bit more situational (you won't always have a Morphtronic in hand).
  • Morphtronic Cord Every time the Equipped monster changes battle position, you destroy a Spell or Trap card. The equipped monster probably won't stay around long enough for you to gain any real advantage by using this card, and you'll more likely end up minusing or dead drawing it.
  • Morphtronic Engine Megamorph is better for the purpose, but you shouldn't run that either, not even in Equip Morphtronics.
  • Morphtronic Map It's decent in Morphtronic OTK for powering up but it likely won't stay around long enough to give you any real benefits with all the Spell/Trap destruction in today's meta.
  • Morphtronic Repair Unit A halfway decent revival effect that is outclassed by a number of cards.
  • Morphtronic Rusty Engine Minor burn damage that really isn't worth it.

Traps:

  • Morphtransition Weak attack negation that is outclassed by a number of cards, most of which aren't worth using anyway.
  • Morphtronic Bind Similar to Gravity Bind, but you need a Morphtronic for it to work, and it's one-sided. Works well with Boarden and in Morphtronic OTK decks.
  • Morphtronic Forcefield Though technically a plus, standard negation is usually better.
  • Morphtronic Mix-up A situational destruction effect that gives your opponent a choice. Generic destruction is better.
  • Morphtronic Monitron Gives you the ability to summon Morphtronics in defense position, but usually isn't worth it.
  • Morphtronics, Scramble! Weak attack negation that is outclassed by a number of cards, most of which aren't worth using anyway.
  • Power-Up Adapter An ATK-boosting card that's difficult to use and a bad idea.

Other Card Choices

Monsters:

  • Card Trooper A Machine-Type Floater that also serves as a target for Machine Duplication.
  • Gadget Arms A completely unnecessary searching effect.
  • Gadget Driver An inherent minus that usually doesn't net any real benefits.
  • Gadget Hauler A Tribute monster starting at 1300 that needs a -2 to become moderately useable. Never use this.
  • Sangan This card can search out any Morphtronic.
  • Leviair the Sea Dragon Dupe a Remoten for +1, remove three and search for +3, make Leviair and bring back Scopen for another +1, make another Leviair and bring back another monster for more plusses.

Sample Decks

Morphtronic Synchro/Xyz

This deck relies on Celfon, Remoten, Leviair, and Machine Duplication to generate Card Advantage and overwhelm the opponent.

Morphtronic OTK

This deck relies on the abilites of Radion, Boomboxen, and Boarden to accumulate enough ATK power and attack directly for a powerful finishing move.

Morphtronic Equip

This deck plays more like Leo used them in the anime. The deck is centered around using Power Tools Dragon and higher-level Morphtronics, and powering them up with Equip Spells. It is not recommended to play too many Equip Spells. 4-7 is the recommended amount.

Morphtronic Burn

This deck uses lockdowns from Boarden and Magnen as well as Morphtronic Bind to stall for time while dealing damage with Datatron and Clocken.
