T.G. Guide

By BF2

"Tech Genus", or "T.G.", were intended to be the Synchro archetype to end all Synchro archetypes. They were released in Extreme Victory, and had a number of Synchro Monsters. As it turns out, their Synchro Summoning ability is actually rather inconsequential - their true power lies in "T.G. Rush Rhino". It's a target for "Horn of the Phantom Beast", and soon, a new deck was born: "T.G." anti-meta. The deck Synchro Summons occasionally, but its main focus is savage beatdown.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Toolboxing Ability: Four of the six "T.G." monsters can search for another "T.G." when they're destroyed, allowing you to maintain hand advantage.

Horn of the Phantom Beast: "T.G. Rush Rhino" and "T.G. Warwolf" are both targets for "Horn of the Phantom Beast", and adding "Reborn Tengu", another floater, gives you even more targets.

T.G. Hyper Librarian: Possibly the greatest Level 5 Synchro Monster there is.

Synchro Summoning Ability: While not terrible effective, they can Synchro Summon Level 5s and 9s quite easily.

Cons

Thunder King Rai-Oh kills them: A well-defender "Rai-Oh" will stop their searches, stopping the other player from gaining advantage.

Speed: The deck is rather slow, especially for a Tier 1 deck.

Main Cards

Monsters

  • T.G. Catapult Dragon: "T.G. Catapult Dragon" is a Level 2 monster that lets you Special Summon another Level 3 or lower "T.G." monster from your hand, once per turn. It doesn't give you a search, so it's almost never used. It can make Synchro combos, but overall, it's not a very good card.
  • T.G. Cyber Magician: "T.G. Cyber Magician" is a Level 1 Tuner monster that lets you Synchro Summon using a "T.G." monster in your hand, allowing you to make a Level 5 or Level 4 Synchro Summon with it alone. It's rarely used, as you have to have "Rush Rhino" to get anything useful out of it.
  • T.G. Jet Falcon: "T.G. Jet Falcon" is a Level 3 Tuner monster with 1400 ATK. When used as a Synchro Material monster, it inflicts 500 damage to your opponent's Life Points. It has no good abilities and can't search, and as a result is never used.
  • T.G. Rush Rhino: "T.G. Rush Rhino" is THE most important "T.G." monster: it has 1600 ATK, but gains 400 ATK while attacking, getting over most other anti-meta monsters ("Rai-Oh", "Koa'ki Meiru" Rock monsters, "Neos Alius"), as well as being a target for "Horn of the Phantom Beast".
  • T.G. Striker: "T.G. Striker" is a Level 2 Tuner monster that you can Special Summon from your hand while you control no monsters and your opponent controls a monster. It's used in every "T.G." deck, mostly as a floater, but also to make "Catastor", "Brionac", and "Trishula".
  • T.G. Warwolf: "T.G. Warwolf" is a Level 3 monster with 1200 ATK. It's secondary in importance to "Rush Rhino", but being a Beast-Type monster, it is a target for "Horn of the Phantom Beast", and it's also DARK, serving as fodder for "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning". When a Level 4 or lower monster is Special Summoned, you can Special Summon it from your hand, allowing you to combo with "Striker", and then follow up by Normal Summoning "Reborn Tengu" or "Rush Rhino" and Synchro Summoning "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier".

Synchro Monsters:

  • T.G. Blade Blaster: "T.G. Blade Blaster" is a Level 10 Synchro Monster with 3300 ATK. It requires a Tuner Synchro Monster (usually "T.G. Wonder Magician" as well as one or more non-Tuner Synchro Monsters. By sending one card from your hand to your Graveyard, you can negate any Spell or Trap Card that targets it, and you can Banish it during your opponent's turn by Banishing a "T.G." monster in your Graveyard, and it returns to your field during your Next Standby Phase. It's a decent card, but not as good as it was hyped up to be.
  • T.G. Halberd Cannon: "T.G. Halberd Cannon" is a Level 12 Synchro Monster with 4000 ATK. It requires one Tuner Synchro Monster and two non-Tuner Synchro Monsters. Once per turn, while it's on the field, it can negate the summon of a monster and destroy it, and when it's sent from the field to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon one "T.G." monster from your Graveyard. It's okay, but for the cost, "Shooting Quasar Dragon" is better.
  • T.G. Hyper Librarian: "T.G. Hyper Librarian" is a Level 5 Synchro Monster with 2400 ATK. Unlike the other Level 5 "T.G." Synchro Monsters, it has no Tuner/non-Tuner requirements. Whenever another monster is Synchro Summoned, you can draw a card with its effect, leading to it being Limited. In some decks, the effect can let you draw up to 10 cards in one turn.
  • T.G. Power Gladiator: "T.G. Power Gladiator" is a Level 5 Synchro Monster with 2300 ATK. It inflicts piercing damage and lets you draw one card when destroyed, but it's inferior to both "Wonder Magician" and "Hyper Librarian".
  • T.G. Recipro Dragonfly: "T.G. Recipro Dragonfly" is a Level 2 Synchro Monster. Once per turn, it lets you send a "T.G." Synchro Monster you control to the Graveyard in order to Special Summon its Synchro Materials. It's okay, but "Formula Synchron" is far better.
  • T.G. Wonder Magician: "T.G. Wonder Magician" is a Level 5 Tuner Synchro Monster. When it's Synchro Summoned, you can destroy one Spell or Trap Card on the field, and when it's destroyed, you can draw a card. It also lets you Synchro Summon during your opponent's turn as an added bonus. At least one is used in most "T.G." decks.

Spells

  • TGX1-HL: "TGX1-HL1" is a Quick-Play Spell Card that lets you halve the ATK and DEF of a "T.G." monster you control in order to destroy one Spell or Trap Card. It's not bad, but "Mystical Space Typhoon" is better.
  • TGX300: "TGX300" is a Continuous Spell Card that gives all face-up monsters you control 300 ATK per "T.G" monster you control. The effect gives rather mediocre ATK, so it's not worth using.

Traps

  • TG-SX1: "TG-SX1" can only be activated when a "T.G." monster you control destroys your opponent's monster by battle. It allows you to Special Summon one "T.G." Synchro Monster from your Graveyard. In general, it's not worth using, simply because "Monster Reborn" and "Call of the Haunted" are better and less situational.
  • TG1-EM1: "TG1-EM1" is a superior "Creature Swap" - it's lets you choose the monster your opponent gives. Most "T.G." decks use at least two.
  • TGX3-DX2: "TGX3-DX2" returns three "T.G." monsters in your Graveyard to your Deck and then lets you draw two cards. It's useful, although not very commonly used.

Other Cards

Monsters

  • Beast King Barbaros: "Beast King Barbaros" is a Level 8 monster with 3000 ATK, but with two tricks: the first is that you can Normal Summon it without tributes, making his ATK 1900, which is a good score. The second is that you can tribute three monsters instead of two to clear your opponent's field. Combining "Barbaros" with "Skill Drain" will give you a nearly free 3000 ATK monster. It is also a target for "Horn of the Phantom Beast".
  • King Tiger Wanghu: "Wanghu" is a Beast-Type monster with 1700 ATK. It automatically destroys any Normal or Special Summoned monster with 1400 or less ATK.
  • Kinka-byo: "Kinka-byo" is a Level 1 Spirit Monster that Special Summons a Level 1 monster from your Graveyard when summoned. If that monster is still on the field when "Kinka" leaves the field, that monsters is Banished. It's used with "Cyber Magician" to make "Formula Synchron".
  • Reborn Tengu: "Reborn Tengu" is the ultimate floater, letting you Special Summon another copy when it's removed from the field. It's also a Beast Warrior-Type monster with 1700 ATK, making it a good target for "Horn of the Phantom Beast".

Spells

Traps

  • Horn of the Phantom Beast: "Horn of the Phantom Beast" is the reason that "T.G." became so good: it's a Continuous Trap Card that equips itself to a Beast-Type or Beast Warrior-Type monster you control, giving it 800 ATK. In addition to that, when that monsters destroys a monster by battle, you get to draw a card. Every "T.G." deck should use three.
  • Skill Drain: "Skill Drain" is a Continuous Trap Card that negates the effect of all monsters on the field at the cost of 1000 Life Points. It's become a tech card for "T.G.", as it doesn't affect "Reborn Tengu", "Warwolf", or "Striker", while stopping "Rai-Oh" from preventing searches and boosting "Barbaros".

Variants

T.G. Synchro

The T.G. Synchro Deck revolves around two sets of cards: "T.G. Cyber Magician" + "T.G. Rush Rhino" and "T.G. Striker" + "T.G. Warwolf".

Skill Drain T.G.

The Skill Drain T.G. deck is a standard "T.G." beatdown deck with "Skill Drain".

Wanghu T.G.

T.G. Agents

Due to the price of "Tour Guide From the Underworld" and it not being available in OCG countries, "T.G. Striker" and "Warwolf" are being used as substitutes in order to make Synchro Summons.

T.G. Fabled

By adding "T.G." monsters to a "Fabled" deck, you an add some consistency as well as faster summoning.
