Forum:Naming Policy

  • Well, firstly... congratulations, guys! We have a little over 50,000 files on this wikia. I don't even know where to begin explaining the shock, pride, and awe I feel knowing that fact. But now, to the real topic... I propose a naming policy for things other than card images. I've been browsing through the uploaded files list for the past three years, going back to 2008, and I noticed a common trend where all these really bizarre file names keep popping up filled with underscores, misspellings, or just words that don't relate to the picture whatsoever. I'm not talking about screencaps (heaven knows how long it'll take deleting and reuploading every single one of the screencaps in all four animes) -- but for things like Tins, I think need to have some organized method of naming files. I've already found several duplicates of the same tin (which I'll get around to deleting eventually). Huajun Chen (talkcontribs) 02:22, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
  • Also -- toys. Do we even vaguely have an organized structure for toys and merchandise at all? Huajun Chen (talkcontribs) 02:22, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
  • Also, I think Booster Packs already have a standardized template that is more or less followed but is it put out in the open for the mass public to read and follow? The Image Policy page only mildly alludes to it, to be honest. Huajun Chen (talkcontribs) 02:22, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
Currently; just sensible names are encouraged. I agree that there should be an image policy for more than just cards/monsters, booster packs and episode screenshots/manga scans. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:27, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
... wait what. We have an image policy for episode screenshots? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? Huajun Chen (talkcontribs) 02:35, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
It's not exactly written anywhere (I don't think), so it's not enforced much (if any).
Here's a good list; and specific examples would be File:5Dx154 Team 5D's panorama.jpg and File:GXx013 Doctor.jpg. -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:41, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
How the hell did I miss that? First I've heard of it and I've uploaded plenty of anime screenshots in the past. That said, I don't think it's really needed. As long as the file name describes what's in the picture, it's fine. if we had a strict policy for that, it would just create extra work for admins. Because no one bloody follows the current image policies for cards when uploading anyway, so I can't see why they would for other stuff. As for the other merchandise, I don't really care one way or the other. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 00:42, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
About time, I am thinking of that bloody time... Many users always shove up the image with random address links, which making it extreme annoy for all you - Admins - to get them moving then fixing all related articles that it used to be exist as former... So guess restricted those spams to just tutor of correct way to upload them? --FredCat 00:45, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Just a note, you shouldn't be deleting and reuploading files just to rename them; admins all have the "movefile" user right, which lets us rename them just like any other page. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:43, September 9, 2011 (UTC)
Any redirect-esque residues? Huajun Chen (talkcontribs) 00:22, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
As I said, it works exactly the same as moving any other page (you get a checkbox to suppress the redirect). ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:50, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Yup. Just make sure to go back and fix the links if you do suppress the redirect. And we don't want image redirects to exist, unlike card page redirects. There's a good reason for it that I can't remember. Delt can tell you. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 09:26, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Or me, I'm the one who originally told him. ;)
If an image is used only through its redirects, that image appears on Special:UnusedFiles, which ultimately only clutters that list up. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:14, September 11, 2011 (UTC)
