Why are the rules for yugioh so damn unclear? There's so much that we need to know just to play a supposely "simple" card game. Like all the damage step rules/trigger/ignition/the SMALL step right before the damage step but RIGHT after the attack/the effect of stardust not being able to kill snipe hunter/dark world effect does not work for "cost"/fissure is not a target. Can someone (or KONAMI) explain why the rules are so, hmmm hard? or so STUPID/RETARDED

Are the rules "Hard" or difficult, or just quite complex or complicated?

Probally a little of both

When cards have wide sweeping effects (Stardust, NecorValley, destruction versus sending, Honest/Shrink)

As for the whole battle step fiasco if I remenber that was solely the fault of shrink. That they had to break it down to work into pre-existing rulings. Honest I hated simply because it overcomplicated that whole setup and acting as the be all end all card for quite a while in terms of battle. I know theres Reverse Trap to throw it back at your oppenent but that was a pretty old card (like structure deck kaiba) and had fallen out of knowledge with players. 198.111.56.48 21:15, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

I have an idea

Maybe you just shouldn't play the game if the rules are "stupid" or "retarded". I think that if your pissed at the game maybe you should play something that doesn't aggravate you. Goblinpunch787

that still doesnt answer why the rules are so dumb...even if i dont play it, its still has VERY stupid rules

They're not either of those words you use to describe them...they're rules. They are what they are...and if your gonna play the game you might as well learn them...right? Goblinpunch787

I don't think this anonymous person is worth anymore of our time, unless they want to add their signature and accept that the rules are the rules, and while they are complex, they are not stupid. I doubt the OP actually plays the game, and just wants to bash it. 70.247.169.204 21:52, March 22, 2010 (UTC)

If the rules are to hard then go play snap :D OjaOwnage 18:20, March 25, 2010 (UTC)

I've been trying to learn them, but there's new stuff that are always coming up. new and new and more new cards with more new rules with more new contradictions. as in one that just came up recently as we were playing the game, when call of the haunted is "negated" for a turn (like by trap stun), does its effect still work? since when u activate it, u can select a monster, then someone chains (trap stun) then after that turn, do u get the monster or not? 24.183.22.36 08:18, March 27, 2010 (UTC)Kha

No monster is Summoned, the card Call of the Haunted will remain meaninglessly on the field. Falzar FZ 08:30, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

WTF HAPPENS TO PUPPET KING??

where the **** does puppet king go when my opponent brain controls and ojama trio my side and all 5 monster zones are full? does he get to keep "puppet king" on his side until "puppet king" is destroyed?

Nope Puppet King will be destroy and send to the graveyard when he return to your side of the field. Since your field is fill. --FredCat100 (talkcontribs) 16:17, July 9, 2010 (UTC)

and

i do play the game btw 24.183.22.36 01:49, March 28, 2010 (UTC)Kha

If you have a full field, you cannot activate Puppet King's effect. Simple Yu-Gi-Oh!. How old are you? I ask this in a non-offensive fashion. -bewk 02:09, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

puppet king is alrdy on the field (doesnt matter how long). my opponent then brain controls him. then after brain control resolves, he plays "ojama trio". which then fills up my side of the field with five monsters. where does puppet king go after he doesnt atk and ends turn? — This unsigned comment was made by 24.183.22.36 (talkcontribs) 04:42, March 28, 2010

"Puppet King" is destroyed by game mechanics.

Hi i'm new!

yu-gi-oh is a complex game but they make it out as easy. i think they should make a mini manual of all the little things us duelists get confused about!! who agrees? Owen13 21:23, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Well, I don't want to be offensive but I think that the rules won't be so confusing if you read the cards with scrutiny. It's always the best place to start.--Hide Head Turtle 11:12, April 8, 2010 (UTC)

What about a card like jinzo who isn't affected by traps is targeted by divine wrath who would win? Owen13 14:42, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Think. -bewk 17:46, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Since when is Jinzo unaffected by Traps? His effect is prevents the activation and effect of Traps as long as he is face-up.It is a Continuous Effect and doesn't start a chain so Divine Wrath cannot negate it.115.135.246.113 00:47, April 20, 2010 (UTC)

More proof that Jinzo is affected by traps: When he is summoned you can activate traps to negate his summoning or to destroy him (for example right as he is summoned you can activate the trap Ring of Destruction which would then kill him because his effect isn't active as he hasn't gotten completely onto the field yet. (unsure on this one) or you could use a counter trap that negates summoning on Jinzo the very moment he is summoned so he therefor returns to the hand and/or is destroyed) Jinzo's effect doesn't work while he is face up so flipping him face down with Book of Moon and then activating a trap that destoryes a face down or defence monster can be targeted at Jinzo. This stuff is really simple if you just sit down and think over the effects of the cards (or go to a FAQ and ask questions there. You do not need too much help to figure out how effects work XD Kiabaman4258 23:09, May 19, 2010 (UTC)

Your first example is incorrect - "Jinzo" has already been successfully Summoned, so its effect is active and preventing Traps from being activated. Cards like "Solemn Judgment" are activated before "Jinzo" is successfully Summoned - it hasn't been successfully Summoned yet, so it's not considered to be on the field yet, so its effect isn't active yet. --Deus Ex Machina (Talk) 23:24, May 19, 2010 (UTC)

Missing the timing

Why did they over-complicate things. This rule should be terminated to make the gameplay more adjustable and less complicated. Master D (talkcontribs) 19:35, July 12, 2010 (UTC)

Rules

The rules do make sense, like you can't use Stardust Dragon's effect if Snipe Hunter's effect is used because it's uncertain if Snipe Hunter will destroy anything or if you control your opponent's drill warrior and you activate it's effect it will be special summon to the opponent side of the field. Many experienced players know the rulings, most times they are encountered in many duels. It comes with time like you can't Forced Back or Divine Wrath a Jinzo and Prime Material Dragon can negate Bottomless Trap Hole, Mirror Force, etc. If there is any discrepancies, on this site should help out quite a bit. Don't get so discouraged, gain the knowledge so you won't be fooled. 173.55.106.213 (talk) 03:21, July 13, 2010 (UTC)Automation44

You can Forced Back a Jinzo because Forced Back Negates the Summon.
On another note, a lot of the time, just read the card carefully and it makes much more sense. Falzar FZ (talkcontribs) 03:36, July 13, 2010 (UTC)

wtf

A few things make no sense: 1)Some traps do not specify when to activate them. 2)Can you choose not to activate your own trap? 3)Wtf is "standby", "main" and "end" phases? 4)Wtf is tribute and is it compulsery for all monsters? 5)How many monsters need to die in a ritual that doesn't specify the cumulated stars needed?

These things indeed do make sense: Have you bought a structure deck? if you have, you also have one of the newest rulebooks. All will make sense to you if you read this book. User:Goblinpunch787
Well, because I'm a stingy bastard, could you please explain them.

1) Traps that do not specify when they are to be activated can be activated whenever you want, after the turn that you set them. 2) Yes, you don't have to activate your trap if you don't want to. 3) Standby phase is after you draw a card at the beginning of your turn, but before you start to do anything. Your Main phase is right after your standby phase, and the end phase is the time interval after you've ended your turn but before your opponent draws a card at the start of their turn. 4) Tribute is the same as sacrifice. Do you watch the anime? It is compulsory for all normal and effect monsters with more than 4 stars, unless otherwise stated in their card effects. 5) As many monsters as you need, so long as their cumulated stars are equal or greater than the level of the monster you want to ritual summon. 6) My user is IPlay4Fun, but I'm not logged in at the moment. And can someone please tell me how to sign off a message??

The one thing i don't understand

The only part of the game i cannot truly understand is Missing the Timing.... it confuses the hell out of me. For all the other rules that do not specify, most of the time its just read the effect, and decide with who your playing... IonCharge (talkcontribs) 13:02, July 16, 2010 (UTC)

Have you tried reading the Missing the Timing page? Everything you need is there. If you understand it, you will be able to read card texts to know whether or not an effect will miss the timing.-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 13:04, July 16, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, just read it, tried looking at it before but could never seem to understand it xD So basically, if something activates after a requirement for an optional effect is made, the optional effect can't be activated? IonCharge (talkcontribs) 13:09, July 16, 2010 (UTC)

Yes. For Optional Trigger Effects if the condition for their activation is not the last thing to happen, then the effect has effectively "Missed the Timing"-- HHTurtle  (Talk) 13:18, July 16, 2010 (UTC)

ok can someone help me out with relinqushed? how do u destory him without traps/spells/effects? is there a way? what happens if u attack its equipped monster with an equal monster? — This unsigned comment was made by 75.67.193.91 (talkcontribs) 02:33, September 4, 2010

...This doesn't have anything to do with the topic, but just attack it twice in the same Battle Phase.
If both an equipped "Relinquished" and another monster with equal ATK battle, then monster equipped to "Relinquished" and the other monsters are both destroyed. Relinquished stays on the field, defenceless.

I Think...

Sometimes the rules do get a little confusing, but many experienced players know different rulings that happen in normal dueling situations. For example you can activate Shrink, Shadow Spell, & Rush Recklessly during damage step or you can call priority on certain monster's effects i.e. Brionac or Caius. These examples are fairly common in normal dueling, like place counters doesn't start a chain. For example Planet Pollutant Virus places A-counters on every face up monster on the opponents side of the field, including when they summon monsters. Fairly new players will not understand some of the rulings in place for certain cards, but that all comes with time. Sometimes people get confused when cards like Trap Stun or Cold Wave are activated because you aren't allowed to play or set any spell or trap cards or you can't activate trap cards till the end phase. These effects DON'T apply to cards already on the field or already activated including continuous spells or traps or field spells. But learning the basic rules and rulings help to avoid confusion. If any trouble arises check cards ruling here, it's not that difficult. Automation44 (talkcontribs)Automation44

I'm amused at how quickly this old thread derailed into a mere ruling query thread rather than discussing the complexity of Yu-Gi-Oh's rules in general. --Gadjiltron (talkcontribs) 13:32, September 10, 2010 (UTC)

For some reason, understanding Yugioh is as easy as you think. You just have to be interested in the game to understand it. Fallensilence (talkcontribs) 03:32, September 27, 2010 (UTC)

once per turn ruling

what happens if i have junk archer on my field and i activate its effect which is once per turn.can i activate it on my opponents turn?--Hitsugaya1243 (talkcontribs) 11:12, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

The rules are a lttle odd, that's all

Van'Dalgyon the Dark Dragon Lord can’t miss the timing because... well, it just can’t. That’s how ridiculous this game is. Battlemaniac (talkcontribs) 20:25, October 25, 2010 (UTC)

You seriously need to read the rules. From the Missing the Timing page: "Note that this only applies to optional effect that are activated "When..." something happens. It does not apply to optional effect that are activated "If..." something happens, such as "Watapon" or "Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem", and it does not apply to optional effects are activated "After..." something happens (like "Voltanis the Adjudicator"). Effects like these can never miss the timing."-- HHTurtle Talk   01:49, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Now that is very annoying. Gets even worse if you're playing with foreign language cards and can't quite get the exact wording. --Gadjiltron (talkcontribs) 07:36, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Priority effects

Can u priority a monster effect even tho the monster was summoned by a card effect. I think u can but I'm not sure.

Lol if you can't figure out how a card works just read the rullings it's not that difficult. The rulings explain all about this kind of thing. also you might want to try erratas since some cards are translated poorley DaNoobKing (talkcontribs) 18:31, January 15, 2011 (UTC)

The game and its rulings cannot be completely understood by just "reading the card". See Also: Shrink Rulings. IonCharge (talkcontribs) 19:38, January 15, 2011 (UTC)

Brionac

So me and a buddy of mine have run into a thought of the fact that brionacs effect doesnt specify only during your main phase so in theory and actuality cant we also activate his effect on our opponents turn?

No. Brionac is an Ignition effect, and can only be activated during your turn. Lappyzard (talkcontribs) 17:41, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

Unless a Monster effect specifically says so, it can only activate on your turn. Remember, Monster cards must follow VERY specific rules. Only their effects let them change the rules, what it doesn't say is irrelevant. Only what it DOES say matters. Example: Mystik Wok doesn't say your own monster does it? But we all know you can't use your opponents cards.--Helix-king (talkcontribs) 18:17, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

Helix-King is correct, the only cards that can work on both players' side are, D.D. Crow, one "Morphtonic" monster that can switch all morphtronic monsters on the field, few trap cards that can support with Number/Position/Summon. --FredCat 00:11, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

Well...

I don't believe it's too complicated, I mean, I've been watching Yu-Gi-Oh! since I was 4 (I'm 12 now), and I understand the rules. I like the idea that Yu-Gi-Oh! is a bit more complicated than other children games, 'cause then it stands out. It makes you think more and makes you plan out your moves. It also makes it a lot for fun, in my opinion-it gets you really into the game and shows your knowledgeable and competitive side. --96.250.23.6 (talk) 23:51, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it also give those unused cards a chance to become playable in the games. --FredCat 00:09, February 22, 2011 (UTC)

My rules q's

1: Dragon Master Dilemma

Okay, I have a "Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon", "Black Luster Soldier" and "Dragon Master Knight" cards. Can I summon "Ultimate" with "Ultimate Offering"? (I only have 1 "Polymerization" and NO "Blue Eyes White Dragon"s)

2: "Dark Hole" Legality

Is it true that "Dark Hole" is illegal nowadays in the card game (you know, friendly duels)? I only have 1.

3: Summoning

How new is this "can only summon one monster at a time" rule?

Any help with these questions are apprecitated. That was another AMAZING message, from ME, InvaderMEEN!Contact me here! 05:14, March 3, 2011 (UTC)

First of all, as any mod will tell you (I know I am not one), any rulings questions should be posted to the rulings thread. Now, as to your questions: 1. You cannot use Ultimate Offering to summon Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, as Blue-Eyes Ultimate dragon can only be summoned by fusion summon. You may be able to use a fusion material replacement monster, but the other monsters used would have to be the ones listed on the fusion monster being summoned. 2. Dark Hole is currently limited to 1 in advanced format (the format used for official tournaments). It has never been illegal for use in friendly duels. 3. This rule has been in effect since the game originally started as it is a core mechanic of the game, something you would know if you had ever read a rulebook. I hope I have answered your questions without insulting you, which if I have I did not mean to.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hello everybody!  :)

Firstly & with all due respect, there is absolutely no need to call the rules of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" STUPID/RETARDED. Kindly please post your question after you've calmed down and are able to ask it with civility.

Secondly, the general rules of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" aren't that difficult at all, but I will admit that certain cards do cause an issue. Most of the time, they can be resolved by carefully reading the text and relating them to the general rules of the game.

Thirdly, what video game console do you own? If you're new to the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" the video games show you the timings of how the cards work.  :)

Last but not least & with all due respect, If you're not too familiar with how a card or cards work and want to add them to your deck, post a question here to help you out before you get stuck in a situation where you don't know how a card works. My rule of thumb is that you make sure that you know how "ALL" of your cards work before actually dueling with them & yes, I understand that this does not eliminate "ALL" of the questions / misunderstandings of certain cards, but they should help the flow of the duel go more smoothly.

Sincerely yours, 173.3.131.186 (talk) 12:52, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
