Forum:Summoner Monk Anti-Meta

I've made lots of deck types - Beatdown, Aggro, Burn, semi-Mill, OTK, stall, Lockdown, - and some that defy description. I can think of only two main types of decks that I haven't made. Exodia is one, which I'm thinking I'm not going to do unless I come up with a really cool way to draw the entire deck in one turn. The other is Anti-Meta. And that is the deck that I will present to you today; an innovative anti-meta toolbox designed to stop any deck in its tracks!

This deck uses Summoner Monk to bring out whatever is needed to tear your opponent apart. Here's the decks that this deck can destroy:

  • DAD: Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer is so bad for this deck, it's not even funny. There's also Thunder King Rai-Oh to negate special summons and stop searches, and Protector of the Sanctuary to stop Destiny Draw and Allure of Darkness.
  • Lightsworns: Dimension Fortress Weapon – end of story. It stops any sort of milling.
  • Gladiator Beasts: G.B. Hunter is so obviously made to stop this deck, it's not even funny. It even has G.B. in its name.
  • Monarchs: Mormolith destroys all Monarchs all on its own. Isn't that nice?
  • Anything that relies on a continuous spell/trap card (Plants, Macro Cosmos, Legendary Ocean, etc.): Chiron the Mage dispatches that handily enough.
  • Exodia: Might I suggest Thunder King Rai-Oh and Protector of the Sanctuary? This will probably do the trick, as Exodia can't be gotten very easily at the speed of one card per turn.
  • Beatdown: Just try to beat down a Rare Metal Dragon. I dare you. Especially when it's backed up by Rush Recklessly and Shrink.

Have I missed anything? Oh yes, Lockdown Burn. While I don't have anything to prevent the burn, I can stop the lockdown bit with Chiron the Mage. Take that, Level Limit – Area B/Gravity Bind/Messenger of Peace/Stumbling/whatever!

Anyways, that's the monsters. Except, that is, for Rose, Warrior of Revenge. No reason not to give myself an extra deck. By the way, there's no traps except for Royal Decree.

Now for spells. This deck has a lot of spells because of Summoner Monk and Chiron's costs. Heart of Clear Water protects the Monk (and possibly G.B. Hunter as well). Fissure, Smashing Ground, Monster Reborn, and Mystical Space Typhoon are all obvious. Allure of Darkness and Magical Mallet are draw power. My Body as a Shield is negation. Finally, Rush Recklessly and Shrink mess up attacks.

Then, there's the extra deck. All of the Synchro monsters have to be level 8, because there's no non-Level 4 monsters in the deck. So, I've got Colossal Fighter, Stardust Dragon, Red Dragon Archfiend, Thought Ruler Archfiend, Light Gazer, Dark End Dragon, Avenging Knight Parsath, and Light End Dragon. There's even anti-meta here – Light Gazer is for steamrollering over Lightsworns.

And now, without further ado, the side deck.

Side Deck:

The side deck is built for even more effect countering. Grave of the Super Ancient Organism (Got SAO?) stops Gyzarus, Heraklinos, DAD, Thought Ruler Archfiend, Colossal Fighter, Black Rose Dragon, Chimeratech Overdragon, Stardust Dragon, etcetera, etcetera. You name it, GotSAO stops it. Meanwhile, Wildheart need not fear Sakuretsu Armor, Torrential Tribute, or any of those types of cards. Prime Material Dragon stops burn decks. Exiled Force is some clean monster removal. Twister gets rid of Skill Drain primarily, which would shut this deck down. Prohibition can do whatever I need it to. Finally, Solemn Judgment is negation, and will probably go in with GotSAO, taking out Royal Decree and Rose (the monsters I'd be summoning with Rose would become useless).

There it is - a deck packed with cards specifically created to counter the metagame! Tell me what you think of this concept deck. Runer5h 01:57, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

---

  • You expect to counter anti-meta with 3 Royal Decrees? This is only but a half of what you can call anti-meta. Chris427
I don't expect to counter meta with Royal Decree. The deck is all about using the monsters to counter the meta. What would you say needs to go in? Runer5h 14:47, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

EDIT: Replaced a copy of Mormolith and Fissure with 2 Mystic Tomatos, allowing me to get to Summoner Monk faster. Runer5h 16:33, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

  • I see. A monster approach. In which case, I think that you're bound to trip on your own monsters in the making of a "lockdown," which this deck actually resembles more than an anti-meta. I'm sure an experienced deck-maker like yourself knows what a lockdown is. The problem I see with this deck is that it seems way too defensive, actually, and especially inhibitive to yourself. You will need to consider a more focused regime to your lockdown strategy. If it is to be anti-meta, localize your cards aiming to counter one of the 'meta' decks, such as Gladiator Beasts, Lightsworns, or Monarchs (in which case, I support your cause). ~Chris427
I don't see how I'd trip on my own monsters - I made this deck to have no conflicts. There's no Foolish Burials to conflict with Dimension Fortress Weapon; no Phoenix Wings to conflict with GB Hunter; no search effects to conflict with Thunder King. The only possible conflict is accidentally destroying my own monsters with Mormolith. If you can explain how I'd trip, that would help.
As for the deck being too defensive, the point of Rose and Rare Metal Dragon is to take the offense while my opponent can't - either with a big synchro or the 2400 ATK monster. Thunder King and Kycoo can also serve somewhat the same function with big attack strengths. And if I focus the deck too much to take on one deck, I won't be able to combat other decks as well. Runer5h 16:51, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

Oh yeah; I'm switching from 3 Recklessly and 2 Shrink to 3 Shrink, 2 Recklessly. Runer5h 16:54, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

  • If it works, it works. I still support your cause for unique decks, by the way. At least get rid of Dimension Fortress Weapon. That card will have seriously limited function compared to the rest of your cards. ::Chris427
And replace it with what? Banisher of the Radiance is a good option against Lightsworns, but it can't stop milling, so I'll think about it. What other card could stop Lightsworns? By the way, thanks for the praise. Runer5h 17:27, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

EDIT: I'm changing the side deck a bit; Prohibition will be taken out for Pulling the Rug to stop Monarchs. Here's the new side deck.

Runer5h 18:11, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

EDIT Again: I'm replacing a Heart of Clear Water with Snipe Hunter. It's a useful level 4 monster that can be removed for Allure. Runer5h 00:48, 19 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

Version 2.0

Okay. Now I'm really changing the deck. Here's the new version:

Edits to Main Deck:

  • Removed Royal Decree.
  • Removed Rose, Warrior of Revenge.
  • Removed both Rush Recklessly.
  • Removed My Body as a Shield.
  • Added Giant Trunade.
  • Added Grave of the Super Ancient Organism.
  • Added Pulling the Rug.
  • Added Solemn Judgment.
  • Added Dimensional Prison.

As you can see, the main change is in the traps - there's significantly more of them. GotSAO and Pulling the Rug came in from the side deck - Rug came in specifically to counter Monarchs, while Grave counters a wide range of things. Solemn Judgment is also a countering card. Dimensional Prison stops attacks. The only other addition is in the spells - Giant Trunade as semi-field clearing ability.

Obviously, there were cuts to support this - the most obvious one being Royal Decree. For monsters, I removed Rose because the Synchros would be wrecked by GotSAO. The rest of the cuts were spells. I removed Rush Recklessly to make room for Dimensional Prison, which largely replaces it. Also, My Body as a Shield went away, as it was there so I didn't have to use traps.

I've also made some changes to the side deck.

Side Deck 2.0:

Edits to Side Deck: Added GotSAO to main deck. Added Pulling the Rug to main deck. Added Solemn Judgment to main deck. Added another Twister. Added Prohibition. Added Raigeki Break. Added Dark Bribe.

All of the cards that got taken out of the side deck actually were just added to the main deck. In exchange, there's another Twister, Prohibition, Raigeki Break and Dark Bribe. They do exactly what it looks like they do.

Tell me what you think of this new, improved concept deck. Runer5h 20:46, 19 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

i think forbidden chalice would be nice Jetronix 09:13, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay, that's actually a great idea. There is, however, a problem; what should I take out for it? I can't think of anything dispensable enough to be removed. Runer5h 19:39, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
EDIT: I decided to take out one copy of Shrink and put in two copies of Forbidden Chalice. That brings the deck up to 43 cards. Runer5h 14:45, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
EDIT Again: I replaced a Twister with Trap Eater, and Prohibition for Grave Protector. Grave Protector stops Zombies and Recruiters. Runer5h 21:09, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
EDIT Again Again: I've swapped Grave Protector in for Snipe Hunter and Mormolith. That means better matchups against Zombies. Runer5h 18:33, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

Skill.........

That is all I have to say. I don't see how my Plants will be completely tormented, (Although Chiron would be a set-back, Tytannial can stop him.) Still, this is a beautiful job well-done. Do you have any other means of searching Summoner Monk though? I also think Pulling should stay sided....--Akiza'sRose66 19:08, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

The ruling with Dimension Fortress Weapon still lets Lightsworns get there effects, minus the mill, it'll slow them down 1, maybe 2 turns (I.E. Ryoku WILL kill it.) If lightsworns are a problem side deck or run Light-Imprisoning Mirror.--Helix-king 23:18, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Good point, but remember; suddenly, if you can't mill your deck Lumina, Garoth, Necro Gardna, Plaguespreader Zombie, and Judgment Dragon suddenly have much lower utility. But keeping in mind what you said, I'm going to be swapping the Solemn Judgments for the 2 copies of My Body as a Shield that were in earlier. I'd forgotten that they were quick-plays and could be used from the hand on my turn, and they'll usually have a lower activation cost than Solemn. Plus, they work on effect monsters too. (Also, Zombies don't seem to be doing much nowadays, so I'm swapping the Protectors to the side deck and bringing back Mormolith and Snipe.) Runer5h 01:34, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

Oh, and how do you get out Rare Metal Dragon? Why not keep Protector of the Sanctuary and run Chainsaw Insect? He's just as big, and he's fodder for Mormolith.--Helix-king 01:45, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Rare Metal Dragon is brought out with Summoner Monk. I'd rather not use Chainsaw Insect, as the idea of my opponent drawing freely isn't welcome, and I don't want to rely on always having Protector out. Plus, Rare Metal Dragon is Allure fodder. Runer5h 01:50, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Runer5h

I just punched myself for not remembering summoner monk! Duh,Helix,Duh! --Helix-king 01:51, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Why bother punching yourself? In any case, does anyone else have ideas for the deck? Runer5h 03:08, 23 July 2009 (UTC)Runer5h
