Biography[edit]

Boating accidents[edit]

Kajiki's father was a fisherman. One day while he and his son, Ryota, were out fishing, the ocean was calm at first, but later rose up and swallowed their boat. They were saved by a passing ship, but the boat had was destroyed. Ryota considered the possibility that the ocean had been angered by a nearby oil spill and blamed the people responsible for the spill.[1]

Without a boat of his own, Kajiki's father would borrow ones from other fishermen on days when the sea was rough and they were too afraid to go out. The risk caused him to disappear in an accident.[2] However Ryota believed he survived and was still alive out at sea.[3]

Post disappearance[edit]

During Duelist Kingdom, Ryota told Yugi Mutou and his friends the story of his father's boat being destroyed.[1]

Ryota came into possession of the card "The Legendary Fisherman", which bore a resemblance to his father and decided to always use it, so he felt like he was fighting alongside his father. During his Battle City Duel with Katsuya Jonouchi, on his last turn, Ryota revived "The Legendary Fisherman", rather than the stronger "Fortress Whale". Jonouchi questioned this decision and Ryota explained the sentimental significance of the card and how he could not bare to leave it in the Graveyard.[3]

Ryota decided to give Jonouchi "The Legendary Fisherman" in addition to "Fortress Whale" after their Duel, per the ante rule. Although "Fortress Whale" was his rarest, "The Legendary Fisherman" was the most valuable to him. Jonouchi could not accept at first, knowing what the card meant to Ryota. However Ryota insisted that if his father were present, he would tell him he is putting too much fate into a card that looks like him and should really follow his heart. He believed that his father would always fight by his side, even without the card.[3]
