TCG/OCG[edit]
In the TCG and OCG, there are currently six monster card types. Many of these overlap with Effect Monsters, but a handful do so with Normal Monsters.

Fusion Monster[edit]
A Fusion Monster (Japanese:
Synchro Monster[edit]
A Synchro Monster (Japanese: シンクロモンスター Shinkuro Monsutā) is white. Placed in the Extra Deck, they must be Synchro Summoned by sending monsters (one Tuner and at least one non-Tuner) whose combined Level matches the Level of the Synchro Monster to the Graveyard. Synchro Monsters exist as both Effect Monsters and non-Effect Monsters.
Xyz Monster[edit]
An Xyz Monsters (Japanese: エクシーズモンスター Ekushīzu Monsutā) is black. Placed in the Extra Deck, they must be Xyz Summoned by stacking monsters of the same Level on top of each other, then placing the Xyz Monster on top of the stack. Xyz Monsters exist as both Effect Monsters and non-Effect Monsters.
Pendulum Monster[edit]
A Pendulum Monster (Japanese: ペンデュラムモンスター Pendyuramu Monsutā) is two-colored, with the bottom half being green like a Spell Card and the top half being colored like one of the monster types or monster card types (yellow, orange, or light blue for Main Deck Normal, Effect, or Ritual Pendulum Monsters, or violet, white, or black for Extra Deck Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz Pendulum Monsters). Pendulum Monsters can be Summoned normally like their primary monster type, but can also be activated as Spells in the Pendulum Zones.
Link Monster[edit]
A Link Monster (Japanese: リンクモンスター Rinku Monsutā) is dark blue. Placed in the Extra Deck, they must be Link Summoned by sending a certain number of monsters to the Graveyard whose combined value is equivalent to the Link Rating of the Link Monster. Link Monsters exist as both Effect Monsters and non-Effect Monsters.
Rush Duel[edit]
In Rush Duel, there are currently two monster card types.
Maximum Monster[edit]
A Maximum Monster (Japanese: マキシマムモンスター Makishimamu Monsutā) is orange like a standard effect monster and is placed in the Main Deck. However, Maximum Monsters come in sets of three, with a main component and two counterparts with the same name, differentiated by a [L] and [R]. Maximum Monsters can be played individually as regular monsters, but can be Maximum Summoned as a set. When Maximum Summoned, all three cards are treated as the same monster and gain a single MAXIMUM ATK, as well as the ability to use or activate any effects that require them to be in Maximum Mode.
Fusion Monster[edit]
A Fusion Monster (Japanese: フュージョンモンスター Fyūjon Monsutā) is violet. Placed in the Extra Deck, they must be Fusion Summoned using a Spell such as "Fusion".
