Playmaker and Varis' first Master Duel

Playmaker and Varis' first Master Duel is the fifth Duel of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, and is the second time Playmaker and Varis have Dueled, taking place immediately after their first Duel.

Prior events[edit]

After Varis forced his and Playmaker's Speed Duel to end in a DRAW, the two had a rematch in the Data Storm, this time as a Master Duel, with Playmaker still fighting for the cure for the computer virus that had infected Skye and Varis hoping to capture Ai.

The Duel[edit]

Turn 1: Varis
Varis activates the Field Spell "Fire Prison". The effects of "Fire Prison" prevent it from being destroyed by other cards' effects, prevent either player from Link Summoning a monster with a lower Link Rating than the monster on the field with the highest Link Rating, and prevent monsters from attacking, except Link Monsters. Varis Normal Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). The effect of "Fire Prison" increases the DEF of all Dragon monsters Varis controls by 300 ("Sniffer Dragon": 400 → 700 DEF). As "Sniffer Dragon" was Normal or Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, adding "Sniffer Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. Varis activates the Quick-Play Spell "Quick Launch", Special Summoning a "Rokket" monster from his Deck, but it cannot attack, also it is destroyed during the End Phase. He Special Summons "Magnarokket Dragon" (1800/1200 → 1500). Varis sets "Sniffer Dragon" and "Magnarokket" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Twin Triangle Dragon" (1200/↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As a Dragon Link Monster is Special Summoned to Varis' field, Varis activates the effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" in his hand, Special Summoning it. He Special Summons it in Defense Position (0/2100 → 2400). As "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" was Special Summoned, its effect activates, placing two Wall Counters on it ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 0 → 2 Wall Counters). The effects of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" prevent monsters from being Link Summoned unless "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" has at least as many Wall Counters as that monster's Link Rating, and prevent monsters from attacking, except Link Monsters.

Turn 2: Playmaker
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" activates, placing a Wall Counter on it, up to a maximum of four ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 2 → 3 Wall Counters). As Playmaker controls no monsters, he Special Summons "Linkslayer" (2000/600) from his hand by its own effect. As Playmaker controls a Cyberse monster, he Special Summons "Backup Secretary" (1200/800) from his hand by its own effect. Playmaker Normal Summons "Stack Reviver" (100/600). Playmaker sets "Backup Secretary", "Linkslayer", and "Stack Reviver" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Encode Talker" (2300/↑↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Stack Reviver" was used as material for a Link Summon, Playmaker activates its effect, targeting one other Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster in his GY that was used as material for that Link Summon and Special Summoning it in Defense Position. He targets and Special Summons the Level 3 "Backup Secretary" (1200/800) to the zone the bottom-right Link Arrow of "Encode Talker" points to.

The effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" prevents Playmaker's monsters from targeting monsters for attacks, except "Linkbelt Wall Dragon". "Encode Talker" attacks "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" (Playmaker: 4000 → 3900 LP). As Playmaker took battle damage, Playmaker activates the effect of "Interrupt Resistor" in his hand, Special Summoning it, then it gains ATK equal to the damage Playmaker took. He Special Summons it in Defense Position (0 → 100/2100). As Playmaker controls a Cyberse monster whose current ATK is different from its original ATK, he activates the Spell "Cyberse Cache", drawing two cards. Playmaker Sets a card.

Turn 3: Varis
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" activates, placing a Wall Counter on it ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 3 → 4 Wall Counters). Varis Normal Summons "Autorokket Dragon" (1600/1000 → 1300). Varis sets "Autorokket" and the Link-2 "Twin Triangle Dragon" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Triple Burst Dragon" (2400/↑←↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. As Varis Link Summoned a Dragon monster with a lower Link Rating than the number of Wall Counters on "Linkbelt Wall Dragon", its effect activates, removing two Wall Counters from it ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 4 → 2 Wall Counters). "Triple Burst Dragon" attacks "Backup Secretary". Before damage calculation, as Playmaker's monster "Encode Talker" points to battled Varis' monster with higher ATK than it, Playmaker activates its effect, making that monster unable to be destroyed by that battle, also Playmaker takes no battle damage from that battle, then after that damage calculation, either "Encode Talker" or a monster it points to gains ATK equal to the ATK of Varis' monster that battled, until the end of this turn. During the Damage Step, as a card or effect was activated while "Triple Burst Dragon" or Varis' monster it points to is battling, Varis activates its effect, negating the activation. The activation of the effect of "Encode Talker" is negated. During damage calculation, as another Defense Position monster Playmaker controls is attacked by Varis' monster, Playmaker activates the effect of "Interrupt Resistor", making his attacked monster's DEF become equal to the DEF of "Interrupt Resistor" during damage calculation, also it cannot be destroyed by that battle ("Backup Secretary": 800 → 2100 DEF). If "Triple Burst Dragon" attacks a Defense Position monster, its effect allows it to inflict piercing battle damage. The attack continues and "Backup Secretary" is not destroyed (Playmaker: 3900 → 3600 LP).

Turn 4: Playmaker
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" activates, placing a Wall Counter on it ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 2 → 3 Wall Counters). Playmaker Normal Summons "Balancer Lord" (1700/1200). Playmaker sets "Balancer Lord", "Interrupt Resistor", and "Backup Secretary" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Decode Talker" (2300/↙↑↘) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Encode Talker" points to. The effect of "Decode Talker" increases its ATK by 500 for each monster it points to. It points to "Encode Talker" ("Decode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). As there are two or more Cyberse Link Monsters on the field, Varis activates the effect of "Fire Prison", while "Fire Prison" is face-up on the field, the effects of all Cyberse monsters while they are in the hand, field, or GY are negated, they cannot attack, they cannot be targeted for attacks, but does not prevent a player from attacking directly, also neither player can target them with card effects. The effects of "Decode Talker" and "Encode Talker" are negated ("Decode Talker": 2800 → 2300 ATK).

Turn 5: Varis
During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Linkbelt Wall Dragon" activates, placing a Wall Counter on it ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 3 → 4 Wall Counters). During the Main Phase, Varis activates the effect of "Triple Burst Dragon", Tributing it, then targeting a Link-2 or lower monster in his GY to Special Summon it, then Varis can Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Dragon monster from his hand. He Tributes "Triple Burst Dragon", then targets and Special Summons the Link-2 "Twin Triangle Dragon" (1200/↓→) , then Special Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400 → 700) from his hand. As "Sniffer Dragon" was Normal or Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, adding "Sniffer Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. He adds and subsequently Normal Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400 → 700). Varis sets two copies of "Sniffer Dragon" and the Link-2 "Twin Triangle Dragon" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Borreload Dragon" (3000/←↙↘→) to the Extra Monster Zone. While "Fire Prison" is face-up on the field, Cyberse monsters cannot be targeted for attacks, but it does not prevent a player from attacking directly. "Borreload Dragon" attacks Playmaker directly (Playmaker: 3600 → 600 LP).

Turn 6: Playmaker
Playmaker activates the Field Spell "Cynet Universe". The effect of "Cynet Universe" increases the ATK of all Link Monsters Playmaker controls by 300 ("Decode Talker": 2300 → 2600 ATK, "Encode Talker": 2300 → 2600 ATK). Playmaker sets "Encode Talker" and the Link-3 "Decode Talker" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Firewall Dragon" (2500 → 2800/↑←↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As the last Cyberse monsters that were on the field upon the activation of the effect of "Fire Prison" left the field, its effect activates, destroying itself ("Linkbelt Wall Dragon": 2400 → 2100 DEF). "Firewall Dragon" attacks and destroys "Beltlink Wall Dragon". Playmaker activates the effect of "Cynet Universe", targeting a monster in the GY and shuffling it into the Deck. He targets and returns "Encode Talker" to his Extra Deck. Playmaker Sets two cards.

Turn 7: Varis
Playmaker activates his face-down Trap "Parallel Port Armor", targeting a Link Monster he controls and equipping it with "Parallel Port Armor". The effect of "Parallel Port Armor" prevents Varis from targeting the equipped "Firewall Dragon" with it with card effects, also it cannot be destroyed by battle. As there are two Link Monsters with the same Link Rating in the Extra Monster Zones, Varis activates the Spell "Arrow Charge", drawing two cards, then revealing them, but they are banished during the End Phase of this turn if they are still in Varis' hand. Varis draws "Squib Draw" and "Boot Sector Launch". Varis Normal Summons "Anesthrokket Dragon" (0/2200). Varis activates the Quick-Play Spell "Squib Draw", targeting a "Rokket" monster he controls and destroying it, then drawing two cards. He targets and destroys "Anesthrokket". Varis activates the Field Spell "Boot Sector Launch", and activates its effect, Special Summoning up to two "Rokket" monsters with different names from his hand in Defense Position. He Special Summons "Autorokket" (1600/1000) and "Anesthrokket" (0/2200). The effect of "Boot Sector Launch" increases the ATK/DEF of all "Rokket" monsters on the field by 300 ("Autorokket": 1600/1000 → 1900/1300, "Anesthrokket": 0/2200 → 300/2500). Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", targeting a face-up monster on the field and decreasing its ATK/DEF by 500. He targets "Autorokket". As a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets the face-up "Autorokket" on the field, Varis activates its effect, destroying it, then sending a Spell/Trap on the field to the GY. He sends "Parallel Port Armor".

"Borreload Dragon" attacks "Firewall Dragon". At the start of the Damage Step, as "Borreload Dragon" is attacking Playmaker's monster, Varis activates its effect, placing that monster in a zone "Borreload Dragon" points to and taking control of it, but it is sent to the GY during the End Phase of the next turn. He places "Firewall Dragon" in a zone "Borreload Dragon" points to and takes control of it. "Firewall Dragon" attacks Playmaker directly. As a Cyberse monster declared an attack, Playmaker activates his face-down Trap "Cynet Refresh", destroying all monsters in the Main Monster Zones. During the End Phase of this turn, Playmaker Special Summons from the GY as many Cyberse Link Monsters as possible that were destroyed by this effect to their owner's fields. "Firewall Dragon" and "Anesthrokket" are destroyed. Varis Sets a card. During the End Phase, as "Anesthrokket" and "Autorokket" are in the GY because they were destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates their effects, Special Summoning a different "Rokket" monster from his Deck. He Special Summons two copies of "Magnarokket" (1800/1200 → 2100/1500) in Defense Position.

During the End Phase, "Firewall Dragon" (2500 → 2800/↑←↓→) is Special Summoned to Playmaker's field. Playmaker activates his face-down Trap "Recoded Alive", targeting a Link-3 Cyberse Link Monster he controls or is in his GY and banishing it, then Special Summoning a "Code Talker" monster from his Extra Deck. He targets and banishes "Decode Talker", then Special Summons "Encode Talker" (2300 → 2600/↑↓↘) to the Extra Monster Zone the top-center Link Arrow of "Firewall Dragon" points to. Playmaker activates the effect of "Firewall Dragon", targeting monsters on the field and/or GY up to the number of monsters co-linked to "Firewall Dragon" and returning them to the hand. "Firewall Dragon" is co-linked to "Encode Talker". The effect of "Borreload Dragon" prevents either player from targeting it with monster effects. Playmaker targets "Magnarokket". As a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets the face-up "Magnarokket" on the field, Varis activates its effect, destroying it, then sending a monster on the field to the GY. As Varis' monster activated its effect, Playmaker activates the effect of "Cynet Refresh" in his GY, banishing it to prevent Cyberse Link Monsters he currently controls from being affected by other card effects until the end of this turn. The effect of "Magnarokket" resolves, but "Firewall Dragon" and "Encode Talker" are unaffected by other card effects. During the End Phase, as "Magnarokket" is in the GY because it was destroyed on the field by battle or card effect and sent there this turn, Varis activates its effect, Special Summoning a different "Rokket" monster from his Deck. He Special Summons "Anesthrokket" (0/2200 → 300/2500) in Defense Position.

Turn 8: Playmaker
Playmaker draws and subsequently activates the Continuous Spell "Battle Buffer", targeting monsters Varis controls, up to the number of co-linked monsters Playmaker controls and preventing those monsters from activating their effects while Playmaker controls co-linked monsters, also "Battle Buffer" is destroyed during the End Phase of this turn. Playmaker controls the co-linked "Encode Talker" and "Firewall Dragon", so he targets "Magnarokket" and "Anesthrokket". "Firewall Dragon" attacks "Borreload Dragon". The attack continues and "Firewall Dragon" is not destroyed. After damage calculation, "Firewall Dragon" gains ATK equal to that of "Borreload Dragon" ("Firewall Dragon": 2800 → 5800 ATK). After damage calculation, as Playmaker's Cyberse Link Monster battled, the effect of "Battle Buffer" activates, placing a Battle Buffer Counter on it ("Battle Buffer": 0 → 1 Battle Buffer Counter). The effect of "Battle Buffer" increases the ATK of all Cyberse Link Monsters Playmaker controls by 700 for each Battle Buffer Counter on it ("Encode Talker": 2600 → 3300 ATK, "Firewall Dragon": 5800 → 6500 ATK). "Encode Talker" attacks "Borreload Dragon". Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon", targeting a face-up monster on the field and decreasing its ATK/DEF by 500. He targets "Encode Talker" ("Encode Talker": 3300 → 2800 ATK). The attack continues and "Encode Talker" is destroyed (Playmaker: 600 → 400 LP). After damage calculation, as Playmaker's Cyberse Link Monster battled, the effect of "Battle Buffer" activates, placing a Battle Buffer Counter on it ("Battle Buffer": 1 → 2 Battle Buffer Counter, "Firewall Dragon": 6500 → 7200 ATK). As Playmaker no longer controls any co-linked monsters, the effects of "Magnarokket" and "Anesthrokket" are no longer negated.

As Playmaker controls no monsters in the Extra Monster Zone, he activates the effect of "Recoded Alive" in his GY, banishing it, then targeting one of his banished "Code Talker" monsters to Special Summon it. He targets and Special Summons "Decode Talker" (2300 → 2600 → 4000/↙↑↘) such that its top-center Link Arrow points to "Borreload Dragon" ("Decode Talker": 4000 → 4500 ATK). "Decode Talker" attacks "Borreload Dragon". Varis activates his face-down Trap "Borrel Cooling", Tributing a Level 3 or lower "Rokket" monster, then targeting a "Borrel" Link Monster he controls to equip "Borrel Cooling" to it. He Tributes the Level 1 "Anesthrokket", then targets and equips "Borreload Dragon" with "Borrel Cooling". As "Borrel Cooling" is equipped to a monster by its effect, its effect makes the equipped "Borreload Dragon" gain an effect. Varis activates the effect of "Borreload Dragon" gained from "Borrel Cooling", targeting a monster he controls and preventing it from being destroyed by battle or card effects this turn. He targets "Magnarokket". As a Link Monster's effect is activated that targets the face-up "Magnarokket" on the field, Varis activates its effect, destroying it, then sending a monster on the field to the GY. He sends "Decode Talker". Playmaker activates the effect of "Parallel Port Armor" in his GY, banishing it and two Link Monsters from his GY, then targeting a Link Monster he controls to allow it to make a second attack during each Battle Phase this turn. He banishes "Parallel Port Armor", "Decode Talker", and "Encode Talker", then targets "Firewall Dragon". "Firewall Dragon" attacks and destroys "Borreload Dragon" (Varis: 4000 → 0 LP).[Note 1]

Aftermath[edit]

After the Duel, Ai viciously attacked Varis, managing to bite off his Avatar's arm, which also allowed him to retrieve the data that contained his body, allowing him to restore his body later. Before escaping, Varis gave the cure for the computer virus to Playmaker, allowing him to cure Skye, who logged out of LINK VRAINS safely.

Notes[edit]

  1. Ai specifies that "Borreload Dragon" would not be destroyed by battle. Why this is was not stated and the effect of "Borrel Cooling" had already been used on "Magnarokket Dragon".
