Playmaker and Varis' first Speed Duel | |
Playmaker and Varis' first Speed Duel is the fourth Duel of the Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS anime, conducted between Playmaker and Varis.
Prior events[edit]
After Playmaker defeated Blue Angel in a Duel, Skye fell into a comatose state and was unable to log out of LINK VRAINS due to the computer virus that infected her. Akira Zaizen, believing it to be Playmaker's fault for what happened to his little sister, trapped Playmaker in LINK VRAINS and proceeded to torture Playmaker until Varis appeared before them and claimed responsibility for Skye's condition. Varis offered to give them the cure for the virus if Playmaker defeated him in a Duel. Zaizen released Playmaker, who proceeded to Duel Varis.
The Duel[edit]
Turn 1: Varis
Varis pays 1000 LP to activate the Continuous Spell "Dragonoid Generator" (Varis: 4000 → 3000 LP). During the Main Phase, Varis activates the effect of "Dragonoid Generator", Special Summoning a "Dragonoid Token" in Attack Position, but Varis cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, also during the End Phase Playmaker Special Summons a "Dragonoid Token" to his field in Attack Position. He activates this effect twice, Special Summoning two "Dragonoid Tokens" (300/300). Varis Tributes two "Dragonoid Tokens" to Tribute Summon "Cracking Dragon" (3000/0). During the End Phase, Playmaker Special Summons two Level 1 "Dragonoid Tokens" (300/300) to his field in Attack Position, one at a time. As Playmaker Normal or Special Summoned exactly one monster while "Cracking Dragon" is on the field, Varis activates its effect, reducing that monster's ATK equal to its Level times 200 until the end of this turn, then inflicting damage to Playmaker equal to the ATK lost by this effect. He activates this effect each time Playmaker Special Summoned a "Dragonoid Token" (both "Dragonoid Tokens": 300 → 100 ATK, Playmaker: 4000 → 3600 LP).
Turn 2: Playmaker
Playmaker sets a "Dragonoid Token" in the Link Arrow to Link Summon "Link Spider" (1000/↓) to the Extra Monster Zone. Playmaker activates the effect of "Link Spider", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower Normal Monster from his hand to his zone "Link Spider" points to. He Special Summons the Level 2 "Bitron" (200/2000) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Link Spider" points to. As Playmaker Normal or Special Summoned exactly one monster while "Cracking Dragon" is on the field, Varis activates its effect, reducing that monster's ATK equal to its Level times 200 until the end of this turn, then inflicting damage to Playmaker equal to the ATK lost by this effect ("Bitron": 200 → 0 ATK, Playmaker: 3600 → 3400 LP). As Playmaker controls a Cyberse monster, he Special Summons the Level 3 "Backup Secretary" (1200/800) from his hand by its own effect. As Playmaker Special Summoned exactly one monster while "Cracking Dragon" is on the field, Varis activates its effect ("Backup Secretary": 1200 → 600 ATK, Playmaker: 3400 → 2800 LP). Playmaker sets "Bitron" and "Backup Secretary" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Honeybot" (1900/←→) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Link Spider" points to. Playmaker sets "Link Spider" and the Link-2 "Honeybot" to Link Summon "Decode Talker" (2300/↙↑↘) to the Extra Monster Zone. The effect of "Decode Talker" increases its ATK by 500 for each monster it points to. It points to a "Dragonoid Token" ("Decode Talker": 2300 → 2800 ATK). Playmaker Tributes a "Dragonoid Token" to Tribute Summon the Level 5 "Capacitor Stalker" (2000/1000) to the zone the bottom-left Link Arrow of "Decode Talker" points to. As "Capacitor Stalker" was Normal Summoned, Playmaker activates its effect, targeting one other Cyberse monster he controls and increasing its ATK by 800 while "Capacitor Stalker" is face-up on the field. He targets "Decode Talker" ("Decode Talker": 2800 → 3600 ATK). As Playmaker Normal Summoned exactly one monster while "Cracking Dragon" is on the field, Varis activates its effect ("Capacitor Stalker": 2000 → 1000 ATK, Playmaker: 2800 → 1800 LP). Playmaker Sets a card. "Decode Talker" attacks and destroys "Cracking Dragon" (Varis: 3000 → 2400 LP). "Capacitor Stalker" attacks Varis directly (Varis: 2400 → 1400 LP).
Turn 3: Varis
Varis Sets a card. As Playmaker controls a Link Monster, Varis Special Summons "Gateway Dragon" (1600/1400) from his hand by its own effect. Varis activates the effect of "Gateway Dragon", Special Summoning a Level 4 or lower DARK Dragon monster from his hand. He Special Summons the Level 2 "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). As "Sniffer Dragon" was Normal or Special Summoned, Varis activates its effect, adding "Sniffer Dragon" from his Deck to his hand. He adds and subsequently Normal Summons "Sniffer Dragon" (800/400). Varis sets "Sniffer Dragon" and "Gateway Dragon" in the Link Arrows to Link Summon "Twin Triangle Dragon" (1200/↓→) to the Extra Monster Zone. As "Twin Triangle Dragon" was Link Summoned, Varis activates its effect, paying 500 LP, then targeting a Level 5 or higher monster in his GY to Special Summon it to his zone "Twin Triangle Dragon" points to, but that monster cannot attack this turn, also it has its effects negated (Varis: 1400 → 900 LP). He targets and Special Summons the Level 8 "Cracking Dragon" (3000/0) to the zone the bottom-center Link Arrow of "Twin Triangle Dragon" points to.
At this point, Varis enters the Data Storm. As Varis' LP is 1000 or less, he activates his Skill "Storm Access", accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Topologic Bomber Dragon" and adds it to his Extra Deck.

He Special Summons a "Dragonoid Token" (300/300) to a zone "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. As another monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to, while "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is on the field, its effect activates, destroying all monsters in the Main Monster Zones, also Varis' other monsters cannot attack for the rest of this turn. A "Dragonoid Token" and "Capacitor Stalker" are destroyed ("Decode Talker": 3600 → 3100 → 2300 ATK). As "Capacitor Stalker" in the Monster Zone is destroyed by a card effect and sent to the GY, its effect activates, inflicting 800 damage to each player (Playmaker: 1800 → 1000 LP, Varis: 900 → 100 LP).
"Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacks and destroys "Decode Talker" (Playmaker: 1000 → 300 LP). After damage calculation, as "Topologic Bomber Dragon" attacked Playmaker's monster, its effect activates, inflicting damage to Playmaker equal to that monster's original ATK, but as a Spell/Trap, or monster effect, was activated that would inflict damage to Playmaker, he activates his face-down Counter Trap "Link Restart", negating the activation. The activation of the effect of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is negated. Playmaker activates the effect of "Link Restart" in his GY, banishing it, then targeting a Link Monster in his GY to Special Summon it. He targets and Special Summons "Decode Talker" (2300/↙↑↘). During the End Phase, Playmaker Special Summons a "Dragonoid Token" (300/300) to his field in Attack Position.
Turn 4: Playmaker
At this point, Playmaker enters the Data Storm. As Playmaker's LP is 1000 or less, he activates his Skill "Storm Access", accessing a Cyberse Link Monster at random from a nearby Data Storm and adding it to his Extra Deck. He obtains "Firewall Dragon" and adds it to his Extra Deck.
Varis activates his face-down Trap "Remote Rebirth", targeting a monster in Playmaker's GY and Special Summoning it to Playmaker's Main Monster Zone Varis' Link Monster points to. He targets and Special Summons "Capacitor Stalker" (2000/1000) to the zone the top-center Link Arrow of "Topologic Bomber Dragon" points to. As another monster was Special Summoned to a zone a Link Monster points to, while "Topologic Bomber Dragon" is on the field, its effect activates, destroying all monsters in the Main Monster Zones, also Varis' other monsters cannot attack for the rest of this turn. A "Dragonoid Token", "Decode Talker", and "Capacitor Stalker" are destroyed. As "Capacitor Stalker" in the Monster Zone was destroyed by a card effect and sent to the GY, its effect activates, inflicting 800 damage to each player (Playmaker: 300 → 0 LP, Varis: 100 → 0 LP).
Aftermath[edit]
During the Duel, Playmaker and Varis obtained "Firewall Dragon", and "Topologic Bomber Dragon" respectively using Storm Access, allowing them to use these monsters again in future Duels. As their Duel ended in a DRAW and they were drawn into the eye of the Data Storm, Playmaker and Varis conducted a Master Duel within the Data Storm to settle the score.
