Merced, Richie

Richie Merced (リーチー・マーセーッド, Rīchī Māsēddo) is the eleventh Card Professor and another of Pegasus' adopted sons. He wielded a Black Duel Disk, proof of being the strongest card professor.

Design[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Richie is a very tall young man, with long spiked hair featured flared-out bangs. Despite his age presumably being within the same range as Gekko and Yako, his face is noticeably worn, with eyebag-like markings underneath his eyes. Richie wears a buttoned-up jacket that ends around his midsection over a black shirt, that also features a furred-collar, along with long jeans.

An omake features Richie with his jacket opened, as well as a holstered pistol in a large belt.

Personality[edit]

Richie is a rather brutal and somewhat thuggish individual, at first greeting Bandit Keith somewhat genially before immediately moving to physically assault him despite Keith being unable to fight back, and being willing to inflict the same assault onto Yugi for daring to defend Keith. Like Yako and Depre, Richie is greatly devoted to Pegasus, and is willing to utilize whatever method possible to return Pegasus to life. This can be attributed to his life before meeting Pegasus, which gave him his harsh outlook on life.

Richie, like Yako, bears a deep grudge against Gekko for the latter's undefeated record, but even moreso in Richie's case with Gekko's perceived betrayal of them in fighting with Yugi instead of for Pegasus. During their duel, Richie lambasted Gekko for his dueling, proclaiming that his will was weak in comparison to Richie, as Gekko still had Yako, compared to Richie, who was fighting alone, an attitude that bewildered Yugi.

Despite his harsh demeanor and proclamations otherwise, Richie does feel a bit of a bond with fellow Card Professor and adopted brother Depre Scott, making sure that Depre was safely taken away after his loss to Yugi Mutou. At the same time, Richie, like the other Card Professors, is strictly professional; he feels no great bond of friendship with them as Yugi's companions have with each other and refused (albeit in a stoic and somewhat relaxed manner) to duel Yugi to avenge Depre.

Etymology[edit]

Merced was the codename for Itanium, an IA-64 microprocessor developed jointly by Intel and Hewlett-Packard.

Biography[edit]

History[edit]

In his youth, Richie was an orphan living in an unknown slum. According to him, he lived life as if he was barely alive. This changed when he was adopted by Maximillion Pegasus, who taught Richie how to duel, giving the young man purpose. Amongst the other adopted children of Pegasus, Richie developed a grudge against Gekko Tenma, who he was never able to defeat.

As he grew older, Richie became a member of the Card Professors Guild, rising up in the ranks until he became the #1 Card Professor, earning him the Guild's coveted Black Duel Disk.

He would later be complicit in Project R.A., joining Yako Tenma in the latter's attempt to resurrect their fallen mentor and father-figure alongside Depre.

Yu-Gi-Oh! R[edit]

Richie appears alongside Depre as one of the final three Card Professors. The duo confront Bandit Keith, Yugi Mutou, Gekko Tenma, and the projected spirit of Anzu Mazaki, where Richie assaults Keith for disobeying Yako's orders. Gekko is able to get Richie to stand down by pointing out that Keith is not Richie's true target, prompting everyone sans Keith to move to another arena-area within KaibaCorp.

After Depre is defeated by Yugi, Richie defeats Gekko Tenma, effectively halting their progress. He is informed by an Industrial Illusions employee about Jonouchi and Mokuba teaming up to take back control of the main control center, but before he can intercept them, he is attacked and later defeated by Keith as payback for before. Due to Richie's defeat, Keith takes his Black Disk from him. Richie is last seen with Depre watching Yugi and his friends reunited on the KaibaCorp rooftop.

Deck[edit]

Richie uses a Gunslinger Deck. He states that it is similar in composition to Gekko's Elf Deck in relying mostly on monsters with special effects as opposed to raw power. His strategies thus utilize a combination of stealing his opponent's cards and countering their own counters, whilst using the effects of his monsters to quickly reduce his opponent's LP.
