Sky Scourge, known as Sky Demon God (てんしん Tenmashin) in Japanese, is a series of Fairy and Fiend monsters.

Design[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The Japanese names of "Sky Scourge" monsters are references to airborne ships or characters from Final Fantasy III.

Sky Scourge Level Attribute Type Origin
Enrise 8 LIGHT Fairy Enterprise
Norleras DARK Fiend Nautilus
Invicil 6 EARTH Fairy Invincible
Cidhels Fiend Cid Haze

The Japanese version of the "Sky Scourge" name, tenmashin, is a reference to the airborne ships from Final Fantasy III; mashin is partially homophonous with "machine", and ten means "sky", which combines with mashin to form "sky machine".

Playing style[edit]

The Sky Scourge series can be divided into two sub-series by their properties and effects.

The Level 6 Sky Scourge monsters, "Invicil" and "Cidhels", cannot be Special Summoned, and can apply one of two different effects depending on whether they are Tribute Summoned using a LIGHT Fairy or a DARK Fiend monster.

L6 Sky Scourge Tribute effect
LIGHT Fairy DARK Fiend
Invicil Negate the effects of all Spell Cards. Negate the effects of all Trap Cards.
Cidhels Add from Deck to hand, 1 LIGHT Fairy or 1 DARK Fiend. Send from Deck to GY, 1 LIGHT Fairy and/or 1 DARK Fiend.

The Level 8 Sky Scourge monsters, "Enrise" and "Norleras", cannot be Normal Summoned/Set, and must be Special Summoned by banishing 1 or 3 LIGHT Fairy monsters and 1 or 3 DARK Fiend monsters from the player's GY. Their individual effects, as well as their summoning procedures, are references to two famous Chaos monsters, "Chaos Sorcerer" and "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End".

L8 Sky Scourge Summon procedure GY banish requirement Effect Effect origin
Enrise 3 LIGHT Fairy + 1 DARK Fiend Once per turn, you can banish 1 face-up monster on the field. This card cannot attack the turn you activate this effect. Chaos Sorcerer
Norleras 1 LIGHT Fairy + 3 DARK Fiend You can pay 1000 LP; send all cards in both players' hands and field to the GY, then draw 1 card. Chaos Emperor Dragon

The series by itself does not form a functional Deck, as the monsters have individual effects that only tangentially support each other. Individual Sky Scourge monsters can be played as combo pieces or boss monsters in Decks with the LIGHT Fairy and DARK Fiend resources to support them.

Historically, "Norleras" is the most prominent Sky Scourge monster due to its powerful effect. It found use in historical Decks such as Hopeless Dragon and "Dark Armed Dragon" Decks, where it would be sent to the GY (with the effects of "Foolish Burial", "Dark Grepher", or "Armageddon Knight") and have its effects copied by "Phantom of Chaos" for a board and hand wipe. It also saw use in "Burning Abyss" and "Fluffal", who can provide the 1 LIGHT Fairy + 3 DARK Fiend GY setup requirements to summon the monster. Later variations would employ "Doomdog Octhros" to search "Norleras" and make summoning the monster more consistent.

Recommended cards[edit]

Weaknesses[edit]

As any Graveyard dependent deck that needs monster effects, this deck has major issues with stun decks with cards like "Macro Cosmos" and "Skill Drain". This will prove even more difficult to deal with than normal because you will need to play massive amounts of monsters in order to play your Sky Scourge Monsters. Which will leave only a small amount of room to deal with problem cards that hinder your monsters or your Graveyard.

Trivia[edit]

  • Each "Sky Scourge", being Super Rare, has minimal Holographic foil. This is evident on "Norleras", who only has foil on his talons and spikes.
  • The poses of "Norleras" and "Invicil" suggest that they are flanking "Enrise" ("Invicil" is looking right, our left, and "Norleras" is looking left, our right).
  • The Sky Scourges seem to be on a battlefield of some sort; "Enrise" seems to be wearing part of a military uniform, and all three have barbed wire in the background.
