Toys "R" Us Promo Proxies[edit]

I've found an old promotional tape sent out by Toys "R" Us from before the anime premiered in the US, promoting both the show and various merchandise (including a section dedicated to the card game). The cards shown in this section are clearly official proxies, as many cards went unreleased and had incorrect Levels. It's worth noting that all cards were in Ultra Rare printing and had the font of the OCG cards. The quality is pretty bad, and I can't make out the set prefixes. I also wouldn't know what to file the unreleased cards under. I want to get these shared, but I'm not sure where they should be listed.

P.S. One proxy was for the SDY artwork Dark Magician, except the card itself was green in the case of a Magic Card, and had the title of "Sword of Light Sealing", probably a translation of "Swords of Revealing Light". What card would that be classified as? Thanks -SlashMan (talkcontribs) 05:29, August 11, 2013 (UTC)

Is there any way you could upload the video to Youtube, or perhaps track down an extant copy already uploaded there or somewhere else? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 13:30, August 11, 2013 (UTC)
I found one on Dailymotion:
The card segment starts at around 7:06. The quality isn't great, though I might get a transfer up on YouTube sometime. Let me know what you think. -SlashMan (talkcontribs) 05:46, August 18, 2013 (UTC)

Importance of Proxies?[edit]

Sorry to start another discussion, but I have a new topic to talk about. In most official sources (such as Structure Deck pamphlets), Official Proxies are used in place of the real cards (the differences being subtle, but definite). Though I was wondering, how many of these are worthy of being uploaded if it's pretty much the same card in the end? The obvious exception I've made was when Blue-Eyes and Red-Eyes had completely different artworks than their release in Structure Deck: Dragons Collide. -SlashMan (talkcontribs) 05:54, August 18, 2013 (UTC)

Proxy Gallery[edit]

So, I thought about gathering all the proxies we have into one place. Some sort of gallery. It might be handy. What do you guys think?
Dinoguy1000 suggested splitting them by their source. My original idea was dividing them by set and, inside that, by language.
Dino's idea is not bad, but, Dino, I believe some of the proxies' source have been lost, either because no one noted them down or... I don't know, some reason. But if we do have the source for all proxies, yeah, might work.
I would like to hear more opinions on the matter, if someone has any ideas and interest. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 19:13, February 24, 2016 (UTC)

The source for all proxies needs to be determined (and, preferably, noted on their image description page), since we need to be able to confirm at-a-glance whether a given proxy is official. Note that some proxies have their source listed on the card's gallery page. (This isn't necessarily so important for proxies uploaded by trusted editors, but is definitely needed for those uploaded by random passersby.) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 20:12, February 24, 2016 (UTC)
True. Some of them have. But others don't. Like this one. How can anyone be sure about the origin of it? Though I bet with the help of the uploader (PhotonLegion, in this case), the source could be found. But what about this one?
But yes, I agree your idea is better. It not only "regularizes" all the proxies by giving them the source, it's probably a more organized way to gather them. I tried to give a life to my idea (though in a very poor way), just to see how it would look like, but nah, it would need lots of galleries and things would be scattered, or putting them in the same page wouldn't work, it would be too long and unorganized.
Concluding: Yeah, by source seems the best. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 20:51, February 24, 2016 (UTC)
What about something like this? -- Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 19:41, February 27, 2016 (UTC)
Tbh, I don't really see much in terms of practical use here. The only use of proxies that I can imagine is using their card artworks for stuff, and even then, I'd go to its card gallery to find the best artwork for that card. It's not bad for the Wiki, but not really useful imo... --UltimateKuriboh (talkcontribs) 06:54, March 3, 2016 (UTC)
I proposed this, because I'm tagging the Proxies with their edition, and it would have been good if I could have found them all gathered at some place. Since I'm running through all of them, I have the opportunity to do so. Maybe in the future it could be useful. Don't ask me how, I don't know how. But just in case, I prefer gather them at one place, even if it's just at one of my sub-pages and only with the their PAGENAME. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 09:27, March 3, 2016 (UTC)

I'm still not happy with the fact nothing had changed. I still think it's important to have all the proxies gathered into one place. If having a gallery/list with all of them isn't necessary, what about something like "Category:Official Proxy"? And since the proxies use the {{OCG-TCG card image}} template, if the | release = parameter is filled with "OP", the category could be automatically assigned to it. Though there are some proxies out there that have | edition = OP, but those need to be updated. But those could throw a (temporary) category warning they have the | edition = parameter filled incorrectly. Well, this last part isn't really necessary.
Summing up: I suggest a category to be added to all the proxies, in order for them to be gathered into one place. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 14:25, March 13, 2016 (UTC)

Categories have been a long-term goal of {{OCG-TCG card image}} since it was first created, and a category for OP images will definitely be one of them. As for putting them in galleries, I would support having them shown in the appropriate set galleries, in their own section perhaps (similar to how e.g. Ultimate Rare variants are shown). I do still like the idea of a dedicated gallery or set of galleries for OP images, but it sounds like you and I may be more-or-less alone in that regard. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:38, March 13, 2016 (UTC)
You know? The idea of having them on their respective set galleries is great! If a category is indeed created, then they would be all gathered by the category. I support that idea. Well, Dino, you are the template guy. If the majority doesn't oppose, could you make the {{OCG-TCG card image}} able to recognize proxies and stick them into that category?
As for having them all together in their own Proxy gallery, it would be useful for someone who wants to check them, yeah. But the lack of support on it is noticeable. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 18:47, March 13, 2016 (UTC)
While I'm still not a fan of marking Official Proxy images with dedicated pages (preferably a category instead), this seems like a decent idea. The only problem I have with it though is that there can be "Unlimited Edition" proxy images of cards that were only released in 1st Edition for a given product. I don't want to create Unlimited Edition galleries solely to host those proxy images. --UltimateKuriboh (talkcontribs) 19:25, March 14, 2016 (UTC)
Hum, that's one heck of a good point. I wouldn't mind creating a gallery specifically for proxies, but creating Edition galleries on a set main page just to host the proxies is something I wouldn't like to make either.
Why don't we go solely with a category for now? Independently of creating a gallery/list for proxies, I think we should go with some category. It would be an automatic way to gather all of them. We do have a category for posters (despite the page being presented as deleted), and it serves the purpose I was asking for: gathering all of that type of files into one space. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 19:35, March 14, 2016 (UTC)
OP images aren't the only "non-standard" card images; there are also, for example, Giant Cards and Case Toppers, both of which sometimes seem to get UE releases even when the set itself only had a 1E release. Anything we decide on for OP images should really also be applied to GC and CT images (and any other weird cases that might be floating around). And we have no problem creating e.g. a dozen set galleries for one-card sets; I hardly see why there should be a problem with creating an additional set gallery or three in cases where it would only be OP/GC/CT images in the new galleries. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:18, March 14, 2016 (UTC)
It can be misleading in instances where an Unlimited Edition of a product is only made available in 1 language. For example, Structure Deck: Machine Re-Volt and Duelist Pack: Kaiba have Unlimited Editions that were released in English-only bundles (Machine Madness Value Box and Silver Dragon Value Box, respectively). If one were to create Unlimited Edition galleries for foreign-language proxies, it can lead another to assume that those 2 products had TCG-wide Unlimited Edition releases, upon seeing the blue links for those UE galleries on the product pages. I don't believe the average viewer is going to be skeptical and examine each of the UE galleries to confirm there is a real-life UE release of those cards in different languages. --UltimateKuriboh (talkcontribs) 22:32, March 14, 2016 (UTC)
I'm on UltiK's side here, in the sense I usually do galleries and I just need to go to the product page and see if the links are there, without the need to actually check the gallery.
But, UltiK, I still think some sort of gallery would be useful. Maybe a different gallery that appears on the product main page, that contains all Proxies (and CT and GC) from that set, divided by language and each language divided by edition? Though the Proxies usually only have one edition among the same language for a specific set. Though there are exceptions like this 1st Edition and this Unlimited Edition for the same pack, in the same language. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 22:57, March 14, 2016 (UTC)
Well, I have had an idea for a long time (and have suggested it once or twice) for "general" gallery pages for sets, where packs, boxes, posters, etc. would be shown; OP/CT/GC images could also go on these pages (and would provide a good excuse to start rolling these pages out, if no one objects to the idea). ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:36, March 15, 2016 (UTC)

(resetting indentation (do you think it would be worth it to import the {{Outdent}} template?)) Hum, you got my interest. But I would like to see it. Have you tried an excerpt of it somewhere? And what do you mean with "general"? Real card pics included, or will those keep their galleries?
A page to insert booster boxes and stuff would be good, yeah, since we have some pics floating around with no use. However, I still think a Category for Proxies would be important. And yes, I'm aware I'm insisting on this. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 22:50, March 15, 2016 (UTC)

I can create an example or two; are there any sets you'd like to see right away?
The current set galleries would remain untouched (well, in the long run their headers would be adjusted to link to the general gallery, but that would happen alongside also linking to the set's other galleries and possibly its lists, too, and the general change is something I've wanted to do for a while regardless).
Galleries and categories are separate systems that serve separate purposes; having one doesn't prevent us from also having the other. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 00:23, March 16, 2016 (UTC)
Well, no rush on it. But since you give me the opportunity to choose, I think I'll pick Clash of Rebellions. It's a recent set that has Posters, Proxies, Giant Cards, etc., so it might be a good example.
Yep. I just wanted to make clear that I vehemently support a Category heh. Becasita Pendulum (talkcontribs) 00:37, March 16, 2016 (UTC)
