Toukouseki Tawashi 「佗鷲 剳鉱石, Tawashi Toukouseki」, known in the English dub as Jeanne Arnett is a female duelist in Duel Academy.

Her Japanese surname translates into “Lonely/Prideful Eagle” while her given name means "Crystal Sickle".

Character biography[edit]

Toukouseki always traveled on vacations throughout her life, and visited France over one summer when she was 14. There, she watched Raphael, the current European champion who succeeded Siegfried over the past nine years, and who was also the predecessor of the later famous Johan Andersen, duel Edo Phoenix, the current American champion who succeeded both Rebecca and Keith Howard. To her awe, Edo wins when "D-hero Dreadguy" destroys "Guardian Airtos", compelling Raphael to forfeit the duel to avoid summoning "Guardian Deathscythe".

Shortly after the duel, she falls into a well and nearly drowns when she’s saved by a mysterious stranger. The incident left her temporary blind, but she realizes it was Raphael that saved her. He christens her with his Guardian deck, deciding he can no longer bear to duel after realizing it was hurting others (i.e. Satou Kouji) and tells her that her payment is to help mankind in anyway she can.

Listening to Raphael's words, Toukouseki saves Saiou Takuma from a fire one night; ends up getting horrible burns on her stomach; when asked how he could repay her, she asks if she could learn to duel in hopes of being just like Raphael. Upon Saiou's' request, Edo has to teach her how to duel over the course of two weeks. Due to her arrogant and stubborn nature, she had a hard time getting along with Edo. After the first week, Toukouseki ends up clashing in a fight against Iwamaru and Honoumaru who have recently failed their entrance exams to Duel Academia; Toukouseki refuses to use Rafael’s deck so she filches Edo’s deck; halfway through the duel, he steps in and wins for her. Post this incident, she decides to go back home.

Two months later, she duels at the entrance exams at Duel Academia and is sent to Obelisk Blue. When given a school uniform a size too small because they ran out of supplies; Toukouseki gets angry and asks Midori Hibiki if she could have a trench coat just like hers, only to be rejected from it. First season, she's rather nasty. She bullies people, and plays by illegal ante rule. She meets Junko and Momoe and somehow become friends with them.

She also taunts Shou to the point where Ryou challenges her to a duel and ruthlessly crushes her. She later duels Mitsuru Ayanokouji and wins, and also meets Manjyome Jun for the first time this way. She ends up having to go to the nurse because of allergies from the rice balls, and then retakes the exam after a meeting with Chronos de Medici.

In the second season, Toukouseki meets up with Edo and repeatedly challenges him to duels, though she repeatedly loses. Afterwards, she bumps into Iwamaru and Honoumaru again at Domino city that leads to her self-title as the unofficial "wind monarch". Upon the start of the Genex tournament, she meets Kanda Tsugio, wins a duel against Ran Kochou, and then duels Ryou. Though Edo instructs her from the background, she still loses anyhow. She then asks Edo to give her the week’s worth of training she had missed the previous year; he refuses. After a confrontation with Edo Phoenix, she is discovers the truth about her ability as a duelist and abandons her Deck as a result. Later on, she befriends Ran and Kanda, in addition to developing a crush on Ryou. She gets depressed for a while and discovers that Ryou has a heart problem.

Toukouseki makes a small cameo in the third season, appearing initially moments before Satou-sensei seeks out Juudai for a duel. She is also one of the students inside Duel Academia when it was transported to the desert. She remains one of the few who is not transformed into a Duel Zombi and participates in the final battle between the students and Zombii. When Johan and Juudai defeat Yubel, she is transported back to the island with the rest of the school. There she meets up with Edo and confides in him her concerns on Ryou's heart condition. Toukouseki remains behind when Juudai and his friends open up the portal to the alternate dimension, though she feels strange sensations from Duel Academia when both Edo and Ryou die.

Voice/Mannerisms[edit]

In the Japanese anime, Toukouseki often finishes her sentences with ‘-aisu’ or '-mao'. (Japanese element onomatopoeia.) In addition, she follows a rule of addressing people with their surname followed by the polite suffix ‘-kun’. The exception to this rule is Edo; when questioned about this, she replies he was a "Gaijin" (a foreigner) and is therefore exempt. However, for a short while she calls him Phoenix-kun to subtly express her discontent. She also has a habit of saying “Toukouseki da!” whenever someone doesn’t address her by her full name, much like Manjyome does in the Japanese anime. She hates being called trash.

In the English anime, she has a mid-Atlantic accent and most of her dialogue ends with the question "yes?". She addresses people as "Mister", "Miss", or "Sir", and occasionally "dearest'. At the end of each victory, she says "that's fucking game".

Toukouseki has an unusual bond with "Necroface", initially the weakest card in her Deck in terms of ATK. She explains it was given to her by a childhood friend, but hasn't yet revealed who it is.
