Yu-Gi-Oh Highlander[edit]

First and foremost, I would like to say that I did not come up with the idea for this format, I am only looking to further popularity in this format. This page is devoted to the EDH/Commander format for Yu-gi-oh. Commander or Elder Dragon Highlander is a format made popular by the Magic The Gathering TCG. The format involves choosing a Legendary Creature to use as your Commander or general of your deck. This format varies from traditional deck building in some key areas. The main deck is increased from 60 to 100 cards and there can only be one copy of each card in your deck. The Commander can be played from the Command Zone by paying the mana cost for that creature. The rest of the game is played in much the same way as a standard game of Magic. To win a player must either bring the opponents life total to 0 or by doing 20 commander damage in one turn by the commander. Other changes include increasing life totals from 20 to 40. Being a multiplayer format there can be more than two players and this makes player interactions very important.

Why do I bring this up? I find it interesting as to why this format or play style has not caught on in the Yugioh community. It is possible to play old-school formats and draft or cube formats so why not Commander also. Just like in Magic, Yugioh game play would have rule changes, such as life points increasing to 16,000 and deck sizes increasing to 60. Just like in Magic, there can only be one copy of a card in the deck. Cards with similar effects are still allowed. Due to the nature of the format, banned cards such as Change of Heart and Pot of Greed are allowed as the chance of drawing into them is lower than in a 40 card deck.

Another difference is that in MTG there is a creature type known as "Legendary Creature" Yugioh has no such creature type.So how do you distinguish who your commander would be? The way I have made the distinction is that your Commander can be any non extra deck monster that can be normal summoned. So if a card states "This card cannot be normal summoned except by..." will not work as a commander. This includes tribute summons. Extra deck monsters are still allowed however there can only be one copy of each in the extra deck. Special summoned monsters cannot be used, Black Luster Soldier, Dark Necrofear for example. The other monsters in the deck must be the same attribute or type as the selected commander. Example: If your commander is Honest, then the rest of your deck can be made with either Light attribute or Fairy type monsters.

The Commander is placed in the Command zone. This zone is a separate space different from the other zones on the field, it is a combination of an extension to the hand and field. The Commander cannot attack, defend or activate effects from the Command Zone, it must first be summoned. In MTG the Commander can be summoned for the first time by paying the mana cost, each successive summon costs an additional 2 mana, in Yu-GI-Oh there is no mana. Instead counters will be used, first summon would be for free, if the commander would be destroyed, a time counter is placed on it, and the player must wait an additional 2 turns before it can be summoned again, and it goes up by two each time.

A player wins when they reduce their opponents lifepoints to 0 or would do more than 8,000 damage in one turn by your commander. Below is a summarized list of the rules.
