Fanslations

Hey, Delt. Not a bad job you and the others have done with the place.

A long time ago, there was a thread on Pojo that I consider the predecessor to things like this wiki - a thread that saw inaccurate fanlations abroad and decided "this doesn't make sense, the card actually says _______."

In that thread there were a few conventions laid down, and I found them quite practical - one that really stuck out was "Konami knows the intention it has for card names far better than we do."

I've been seeing this defied in various places on the wikia, and I was wondering what I could do to combat such.


I've also been seeing people treat Shriek as an "official source" more often as of late, and this itself distresses me, since I'm one of the guys who bothers to try to catch Shriek's mistakes. The guy's not perfect.


Got any reccomendations on how I might combat these misgivings?

Not everyone on an English site is going to know Japanese or have some understanding of how the language works. If the first translation they see is a mis- or alternate translation of the English name Konami/UDE/4Kids choose they assume it's the original name and the English version changed the name. e.g. "Revise Dragon"/"Leviath Dragon". It can be difficult to explain this when someone has become accustomed to an old translation and doesn't want to accept the new one.
We obviously can't educate every current and future user in enough basics of Japanese to tell when an English name is an intended translation of the Japanese. So there's not a lot of counter measures to stop them happening in the first place. You can still fix them as you find them though. If the same page frequently gets changed by different users to use a fan translation, you can add hidden text along the lines of <!--X and Y are both acceptable translations of Z. Y is the one used by Konami, therefore the only official one.--> and some similar message if it's a pure mistranslation that's constantly added. -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:02, June 12, 2011 (UTC)
A sober and effective means of handling it, as usual. I was right to come to you. I'll be informing you if anyone gives me any further flak about such matters.
One thought still occupies me - does the wiki have a decently dedicated listing of "users who actually know Japanese well enough to be taken as worthwhile authorities?" It may be useful for a team to organize and end disputes on matters of this sort, by putting down any old misguided fanlations that've somehow missed our ken, and I kind of am still a bit shaken by the few risky comments I've seen that drove me to you in the first place. (The suggestion that we ought take shriek as official really messed with me; it's as backward an idea as taking this wiki itself official, and as nice as a thing we have here, there are reasons wikis can't be trusted at all times, and those reasons are reasons that no wiki may escape, not even this one.)
In short, I think I'd like to assemble a crack team of people-able-to-correct-fanlators.EDavidR (talk • contribs) 13:42, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
Our main go-to guy for definitive answers on Japanese translations is III (talk • contribs); IIRC, he's a Japanese native. Other than that, I don't know anyone offhand, though maybe Delt does. 「ダイノガイ千？！」? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:57, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
III is the best Japanese speaker here that I'm aware of. Their English isn't as strong as most other users, but they're still very good at translating names and phrases, just not long sentences or paragraphs. I'd still trust III's translations over anyone on any Yu-Gi-Oh! fansite. No, I don't know for definitive if they're a native. They don't seem to want to give away much personal information. (Hence the gender-neutral pronouns.)
Deus Ex Machina knows enough to translate rulings, but admits he's not very good at translating much else.
After that there are some users with basic knowledge of the language, enough to translate katakana and know how to use a dictionary for hiragana and kanji words. -- Deltaneos (talk) 17:42, July 4, 2011 (UTC)

Material Monsters/Materials

I just wanna remind ya that the Expert Ruling article still has "Material Monsters" included the list of "Tournament Guidelines", except for "Xyz" name. Oh and for Elemental HERO list flaw; "Elemental HERO Inferno" was listed in that navibox twice. --FredCat 13:54, July 3, 2011 (UTC)

Watermarked Images

This is harassment from an editor, who didn't get their way, rather than pure vandalism. I think this falls slightly outside the scope of VSTF and is usually left to staff. But it has been passed on to them and someone has dealt with him now. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:15, July 4, 2011 (UTC)

Spell of Pentagram

Batch image download

I mean all. I want to back them up off site for one thing. For another once I have them sorted out I can go through them and see where we are really missing quality images. Going back and forth one page at a time is slow, tedius and repetitive. I am just jumping all over the place at times. Also once I know I have everything from a certain date back, I can just look for new images that have dates after that point to keep things up to date.

I'm not aware of any way of doing it using Wikia or MediaWiki functions. This Extreme Picture Finder program seems to be able to do it though. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:14, July 11, 2011 (UTC)
I've got something that seems to be working now. I am using "Picture Ripper 4" what I did was to Go to the Special Pages->File List and put it in File Name Order 500 entries to page and changed the limit to 50000 in the Browser's address bar and reloaded the page. )However 5000 was the max it would do.) I Wanted as few starting pages as possible) When that came up added that page to the Starting Pages List. Went to end of Page and hit the Next Page arrow and altered the offset to 5000. Went to the end of list and had about 10 Starting Addresses set the craw depth to 2 and now am downloading from about 16,000 links (It finds and ignores the links for the Talk Pages and that takes care of about half of the links. Article boilerplate

I've been working a bit on a Set Card Galleries boilerplate, and I think I have most of the needed functionality down (it still needs most of the flagicons to be added, and it still requires you to manually fill in the localized set name in the appropriate locations (and, obviously, you have to fill in all the card images/details yourself), but other than that, it should be pretty much feature-complete and is fully automated); do you see anything that should be added or changed? If you're wondering, I'm going to use this and similar boilerplates written for list and ratio pages as a basis for developing a template to do much of this automatically; feel free to start these boilerplates (or other ones for card info pages; I intend to add lots to this) if you'd like. =) 「ダイノガイ千？！」? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 07:11, July 8, 2011 (UTC)

Have you tried subst:#ask to get the local set name from the main set article?
I don't think more than one flag per language is needed. United Kingdom flag for English/English Worldwide, United States flag for North American English, Europe flag for European English and Australia flag for Australian/Oceanic English. -- Deltaneos (talk) 11:53, July 8, 2011 (UTC)
Not yet, but I'd been thinking about it. The main problem (one that's been holding up several other projects of mine, too) is that currently, property coverage of these names is spotty at best; the situation should improve considerably, though, when I finally get around to finishing {{OCG-TCG set table}} and we deploy it.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Rage

I'm sure there are thousands of fan made unofficial Yu-Gi-Oh! projects. This wiki is mostly for official stuff. Only very widely recognised unofficial stuff is documented. Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series is one of the biggest and very popular, so it qualifies.
It's hard to measure exactly how popular something unofficial must be before it's considered notable enough to have an article. I don't think 10,000 views would really be enough. Plus if the only people creating articles for a fan series are those somehow involved in making it, it's generally not considered notable enough. -- Deltaneos (talk) 20:24, July 8, 2011 (UTC)

I mean that article you have which covered each Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga "summary"... So for the "Box"; it's little hard to explain from what I have knowledge - I like to have a color code for each group of cards in my Collection Article. Like Yellow color code for Normal Monster, Brown (seemed to be correct color) for Effect Monster, Blue for Ritual, Purple for Fusion, etc. --FredCat 12:39, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I think I see what you mean. For pages like this, you want to colour code each row by the type of card? For example:

Click edit this section to see how I did it. It's basically adding bgcolor="whatever colour" after each |- before a row.
If you want to change the colour of the main heading, replace "class="wikitable" style="width:100%" with border="2" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" style="margin-top:1em; margin-bottom:1em; background:#FFFFFF; border:1px #aaa solid; width:100%" and replace #FFFFFF with the colour you want.

For some cards you've used the top colour and for others the bottom. The top ones are the colours of the borders of the cards, while the bottom ones are the colour of the text/lore area. I'd advise using the bottom ones for all, since they're lighter and easier to read black and blue text off. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:28, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

A few things

This card and "Time Travel" appear to have slightly different kanji. Would it be best to split the articles because of that? Also, I just stumbled across Deck Gallery:Pete Coppermine. It's not actually kanji, despite what the template parameter is called. Kanji are the characters borrowed from the Chinese alphabet. They're the more complicated ones: 機械改造工場. Kana are the characters which represent syllables. Kana consists of hirigana, used for Japanese words, and katakana, used for non-Japanese words. Katakana are straight-ish lines connect at angles: ブラック・マジシャン. Hirigana are curvier: きかいかいぞうこうじょう. It's katakana in this case.
I agree they should separate articles. (Turns out they do.) It looks like "Time Travel" (Worm Slip) is based on "Dimensionhole" (Worm Hole) and deliberately given a different name to be treated as a different card. And as TwoTailedFox pointed out in the page history, both cards appear in the same anime series, as different cards.
Bit of both about the Deck galleries. It's not something I'm really interested in anymore, but I don't mind if someone else works on them. -- Deltaneos (talk) 12:22, July 11, 2011 (UTC)

Edited Art Category

  • Hey Delta. Do you think an Edited Art Category would be a good idea? To add a category to cards whose art has been changed via censorship, revising, etc.? I know we have that one page that lists them all, but sometimes, it can be a bit difficult to notice new cards that have modified art.--YamiWheeler (talk • contribs) 13:54, July 11, 2011 (UTC)
You mean as a way of picking out cards whose artwork was edited as apposed to completely redrawn? Or cards that were censored as apposed to being given alternate artworks? (One way includes cards like "Ultimate Offering", the other doesn't.)
I've been thinking we should add a property to the artwork pages that say why the cards were changed; sex, religion, violence, etc. We could also add a property to make whichever distinction you're suggesting. This would let us add filters to Category:Card Artworks like on Category:OCG cards, so people can fliter the category down to cards matching the description they want. -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:32, July 11, 2011 (UTC)
  • That actually sounds a lot better than what I was thinking of, but something like that, definitely. I was originally saying that we just needed a category to show which cards have edited artwork (for whatever reason, for example, Ultimate Offering completely redrawn, or Mad Lobster's art being revised in the OCG/TCG, or even Don Zaloog's guns changed to swords, but not manga redraws, obviously.), so there's a way to find them more easily, but that property idea sounds a lot better. RE: Grey text

Your rite "This card can only be destroyed by battle with another "Number" monster" is not in gray text. But, whoever was the 1st person to make that gray that person must have a reason. "Watt King Cobra" card text says "...When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent by attacking directly: target 1 "Watt" monster from your Deck; add it to your hand." you'll notice there are 2 punctuations that aren't in the card's artwork: = : and ;. It's hard to tell who was the one who started that gray text. I don't think User:002517 did it; he hasn't edited any cards so far. It must be someone else. The 1st "Number" that was was "Utopia". Partner parameter

Can we split the "partner" parameter in Template:Infobox/Yu-Gi-Oh!/Character off into "spirit partner" and "video game partner", please. It's causing some confusion and we've even had a few additions of people to the parameter that a given character may have teamed with once in the anime or manga. I don't think teammates should be listed as partners either, which as far I know is what the video game partners are. Mentioning the team should be enough. The reader can go to the article to see who else was on the team. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:13, July 14, 2011 (UTC)

The template used to use [[Appears manga::x]], where x is whatever you enter.
  • When you used Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga){{!}}Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, you got [[Appears manga::Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga){{!}}Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]]. ({{!}} just adds a |, without the template thinking it's a new parameter.) So it's like a regular pipe link.
  • When you used [[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)]]{{!}}Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, you got [[Appears manga::[[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)]]{{!}}Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]], which is weird, but worked.
  • When you used [[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)|Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]], you got [[Appears manga::[[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)|Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]]]], which is weird, and doesn't work.
The template was changed to use strings to shave two characters off both the left and right of what you enter (i.e. the link brackets.) and then put that as the x in [[Appears manga::x]]. So [[Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)|Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]] is changed to Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)|Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and then to [[Appears manga::Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (manga)|Yu-Gi-Oh! GX]]

Actually, Spirit Partner only works one way. Yusuke Fujiwara can have |spirit partner = [[Honest (character)|Honest]]. What would be used on the Honest article to link him to Yusuke Fujiwara? -- Deltaneos (talk) 13:46, July 15, 2011 (UTC)
Ack, I didn't think of that. "human partner" just doesn't sound right, but it's the only thing I can think of that makes sense. And that would just cause more confusion, actually, since both could be used in the same infobox. I'll have to think about that some more.

Annoy User #3

Sorry to ring you in, but this conflict user, indeed with my bunch of curse, is having mental problem with trying to weigh the knowledge of "Red-Eyes Wyvern's" cost and "Light and Darkness Dragon" effect that activate and resolve in wherever. You could see them in the latest two Forums where I had my heat argue with him. I told him that Wyvern's "Banish" effect is cost and it cannot be stop; he denied it and called "Cost" an effect as further as ignored the explanation of "Cost". I also told him that "Light and Darkness Dragon" effect that activate and resolved in Graveyard, while he denied it, again, that it was a Spell while it was equipped under "Dragunity Arma L." effect and second time, considered that "Effect Monster" effect can be activate while equipped/being a continuous Spell Card. WRGP sponsors

Do you recall hearing that the WRGP was sponsored by the "Pegasus J. Crawford Memorial Foundation". Apparently, the same poster featured other sponsors - pretty much every company ever mentioned in YGO that's not KaibaCorp. The Garm Group, Schroeder Corp, Senrigan Group, Bolger & Company and the Manjoume Group. The full names of each company was also provided. However, I want to make sure this was actually featured. As much as trust most Janime forum users, I haven't seen these used in a sub, so I'm a bit wary. Do we happen to have an image of the poster that we can ask III to look at? Odd Sorting Bug

When you sort attack or defense, it sorts by biggest leading number instead of sorting by the whole number. Any clue as to why it's like that? --Xsamuraizx (talk • contribs) 18:43, July 19, 2011 (UTC)

I think it might have been that the numbers were being treated as text when there was also empty values in the column. I've separated the Spell and Trap Cards from the Monster Cards to fix this. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:57, July 19, 2011 (UTC)

Solemn Judgment Gallery

I just added in some missing entries in the gallery and a I noticed something weird when I was finished. All of the images based on the Structure Deck cards were stretched out of shape. I still don't get it. I've uploaded again the gallery and it's fixed for the english part. But if you look at the japanese one, the first image (volume 6) works. We miss the Metal raiders but yet, the next one (Duelist Legacy Volume.4) works fine though the Structure Deck 11: Wave of Flashing Light and the Structure Deck 14: Advent of the Emperor don't work because the Beginner's Edition 2 is missing. Videos

Just double checking; if a video already exists on youtube, it should be a direct link (using the <youtube></youtube> tags)? and any videos from youtube should not be reuploaded here, and should be deleted if they are? I tend to dislike both, but that's probably because I dislike how videos are often used here in general:
  • Articles made just to display a video and contain little or no other content.
  • Videos added because people like them rather than they're useful or encyclopedic.
  • Videos added by people who want to advertise the videos.
  • Copyright violations.
For legitimate usage, I suppose the Video namespace ones have more potential since it's easier to style them, like putting them in thumbnails and what-not and they have a page where licensing information can be added. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:48, July 20, 2011 (UTC)

Pretty much all of the abridged related videos that are uploaded here are unused. Maybe I'll try use examples:
1) For example, Leather Pants uses the video via the <youtube></youtube> tags; but the same video was uploaded here (Video:LEATHER PANTS REMIX - (FEAT. SHADYVOX)) and is unused. Should the unused video here be deleted?
2) For example, Yu-Gi-Oh: Season Zero Abridged - Episode 1, uses the video that is uploaded here. Should that be changed to a <youtube></youtube> tag, and the video here be deleted?

Summoning

What would happen if you combine a Monster Card and a Spell Card and a Trap Card = Monster? If the spell and trap were different than a normal Trap Card and a normal Spell Card, it would make a new kind of monster kind of like Xyz Summon? But, you still have to have normal spell cards and normal trap cards in your deck or else you will be in big trouble. Signed Kamishin

Falzar wasn't necessarily trying to stop this idea. He deleted the page because it was user-specific stuff posted in the template namespace rather than a user page and because a copyrighted image was being misused.
Anyway, about the speech bubbles. I've seen them used on other wikis. They are interesting, but I'm afraid I'm not really in favour of this idea. Sorry.
  • The images used are often copyright violations.
  • It clutters the "file links" section on image pages.
  • The images can be uploaded over, which can cause unnecessary server strain as potentially thousands of pages need to be changed when the image is replaced.
    • That can also be abused to put an offensive image in thousands of pages. And Wikia has often had problems with uploading new versions of images, where the newest version won't always get shown, so they could possible get "stuck" on an offensive version.
    • It's also possible that this could be abused to perform denial-of-service attacks.
  • It also requires that templates be used every time you leave a talk page message. This can also cause unnecessary server strain as pages need to be recached if the templates get changed.
    • And can be abused by vandals in a similar fashion to uploading over the images. (Although Wikia might be changing user page settings so they can only be edited by the associated user and admins.)
  • They make pages harder to read.
  • They're distracting from the actual message.
  • They often have a section for an extra comment/catchphrase which isn't part of the message, which can be distracting too.
  • I'm sure that there are other problems too.
I might be making some of those problems seem a bit bigger than they actually are. Anyway, I'm really not a fan of the word bubbles and I can't say I'm in favour. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:25, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

1) You created lots of templates on separate pages; most of which were unused or were random redirects. That is what I was cleaning up.
2) Fair use images aren't meant to be used in this manner anyways.

SMW off for a while

When a number of infobox templates were changed on the site a few hours ago, it flooded the caches on our network and caused massive load issues. I have turned off SMW on the site for at least the next 18 hours to let it sync back up correctly. Trap-Spell Article Trouble

I just witnessed that some user just put in the image of Keith aim a gun at Pegasus' head; complete replaced the article that was such to show the list of "Trap-Spell" card or something you knew. RE: WC Items

That a tough question, right now I am working on WC07. For 2009, 2010, and 2011, the hairstyle is indeed called Hair No.03. If we create a separate articles, it involved a lot of renaming and there is a problems. For 2007 and 2008, they have the same hairstyle, but 2008 have 11, while 2007 have 10. The same thing goes for 2009, 2010, 2011. 2009 have 9, 2010 have 13, and 2011 have 11 I think according to some of the videos I watch. I have never play 2011, might if no one is going to do WC11 characters. If you are going to rename, you are renaming 21 pages, so far in my knowledge, you can only rename three pages before your action is stop. I think it best to not rename, I will give you a example how it will look. Also, in 2011, there is a new items call skin color.

For example, Hair No.09 is the ninth hairstyle in the World Championship video games. It can be chosen by female or male players.
