Colour Conflict

Just to let you know that Color code; CCC0D8 (which for Ritual) and CDC0DA (which for Fusion) are exact same shape; if you think I am joking, try see my Collection for example. --FredCat 17:25, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

You can see more colour schemes Konami have used here. The one that's currently third on that list has a better distinction between Ritual and Fusion. -- Deltaneos (talk) 17:44, September 2, 2011 (UTC)

Template:Decklist

Are we supposed to use Template:Decklist in articles, and if so, why? BF2 Talk Deck Guides 16:34, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah. It's used on a few hundred character articles to list their Decks. This was its original purpose. It's also used in many episode, chapter film etc. articles to list featured cards. I personally think it also looks better on Deck type articles than long separate lists of Monster, Spell and Trap Cards. Although the title at the top needs to be changed from "Deck" when necessary to indicate the contents are not a Decklist. -- Deltaneos (talk) 20:07, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

Unnamed monsters

Say, I see you're uploading English manga scans. If you could, could you get some pictures of unnamed monsters for me? First, there's a bunch of monsters on the table when Duel Monsters is first introduced (the scene with the "Giant Sc-/Giant So-" that I still think is supposed to be Giant Soldier of Stone). Next there's a bunch more that get destroyed by Battle Ox during Yugi and Kaiba's first duel. Finally, there's one that the Ventriloquist of the Dead plays; it's a little black thing that's mostly eyeball. We already have one of that, but it's a scanlation so we can't use it. Thanks ahead of time! Rod (talkcontribs) 22:53, September 5, 2011 (UTC)

I've been getting most of my recent images online. They only have scanlations for those particular chapters, but I should hopefully be able to scan my own ones sometime this weekend. In the Japanese version "Giant S..." was called "岩男" (Rock Man). I'm not sure what the translators were aiming for. -- Deltaneos (talk) 21:21, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
Aren't we not supposed to use scanlations? They technically count as "fan-made," I think. I already chewed out WinterNightmare about that... Rod (talkcontribs) 22:13, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
Any I've used are either from the official English print or cropped to not include any scanlated text. -- Deltaneos (talk) 22:21, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
Eh, I'd still stay away from them. It's piracy, after all, and I wouldn't want you or the wiki to get in trouble. Do me a favor and wait until you can scan yours this weekend. I'm off to delete some scanlations myself. Rod (talkcontribs) 23:07, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
If it's the same image it shouldn't matter where it came from. It's no different if I scan the image myself, copy one from a fan who doesn't like other people using stuff he's scanned or get it from a site that's using it illegally. As far as copyright problems for the wiki go, what matters is how much of the copyright work is being used and for what purpose it's being used.
The scanlators are of course breaking the law by uploading the whole thing. Reading scanlations, as far as I know, is illegal too, but very rarely, if never, do people get punished for it. The logic behind it being illegal and immoral is that you're using something for free, when someone should be getting money from you using it. Since I already own and paid for the volumes, whose scanlations I've been browsing, I'm just using them to save myself re-inventing the wheel. I'm not doing anything at the expense of the copyright holder. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:47, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
If there's anything else you need. Let me know. It could be a while before I get another chance to scan stuff. I've already added a new Sound Pierrot image to the list. -- Deltaneos (talk) 21:24, September 6, 2011 (UTC)
I've also scanned the Labyrinth cards again. They're better than the previous batch in that they're not bluish. But worse in that they're just black and white, so the detail isn't as good. I'd say the current ones are better and I'd only be wasting time uploading the new ones. I'll choose a different colour setting on the scanner next time. Do you need anything else? -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:51, September 8, 2011 (UTC)
Jonouchi had an unnamed from, I believe, the Ryuzaki duel. It looked a bit like an M-Warrior. Rod (talkcontribs) 00:23, September 9, 2011 (UTC)

Character names on portals

So, I've been updating portals without actually having a clear idea of this... How exactly should character names on portals be handled? It seems that you prefer both a character's English and Japanese name be present if they differ (an idea that I support), but other than that, there is exactly no consistency in which gets put in the label, and which below the box. Thoughts? ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 17:34, September 10, 2011 (UTC)

English goes in the label and Japanese below it. If the character is unnamed in the English version, the Japanese name goes in the box. Are you sure it's not consistent? -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:18, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Not on the TF05 portal, no - there are plenty of characters with official English names whose Japanese names are used in the label and the English name isn't given at all (I looked through all of them when updating the page to use {{Portal}}), and I'm pretty sure I saw at least a few instances where the Japanese name was in the label and the English name below the box. I'll start fixing this as I edit Portal: pages now, too, though. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:21, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Are you referring to the purple ones? They are an odd case, where the game's translators made a mess. In the Japanese version, they are characters that were newly added for the 5D's Tag Force games. However the English translators seem to have tried to pass them off as characters from previous games by giving them names of characters from older Tag Force games. If you go by the English version, this means some characters de-age and one even changes sex. Those new characters' articles use their Japanese names.
If it's not those, the only other one could be Nanosa, who uses (half) her Japanese name in the English version of that game. Later video games give her a more original English version name. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:52, September 10, 2011 (UTC)
Hmm... That could be; I wasn't paying attention to whether the characters had purple frames while going through them (I was doing so to check for redirects, and happened to notice that some of them were using Japanese names while doing so), and I can't remember any particular characters now. I do remember that several characters whose Japanese names are used on the portal have an official English name from... the Capsule Monsters anime, I think (or maybe the DDM video game)? I may be talking nonsense; I'll have to check a few characters to refresh my memory. =P ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:54, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

You only messaged him less than two and a half hours beforehand. He might not have seen the message yet. From what I gather this in this Deck Guide section, people write their own guides and like user pages, other people shouldn't change the guides without their permission, unless fixing or removing something inappropriate. -- Deltaneos (talk) 23:15, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Manga lore problems again

Continuing the discussion we had about the "Masked HEROes", what do you suggest we do for cards like "Gem of Lycanthropy". The page gives a fake lore then disclaims it, saying what the card literally says. We need to track lores like this down and fix them. But I'm not sure how you'd word it. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 01:09, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

"Underworld Dragon Dragonecro" can be added to that list.
For "Gem of Lycanthropy", I'd do it the other way around, post the official lore first. And make note of an approximation of how it works afterwards. maybe use the footnote system. Negref can be applied to CardTable2 to stop the ref markup possibly interfering with SMW.
I wouldn't list the Types used in that explanation, unless the characters' dialogue indicated that was how it worked. I'd just say 1 monster whose effect includes being Special Summoned by the effect of "Gem of Lycanthropy". -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:41, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Superscript octothorpes?

So, I already know that we don't want superscript octothorpes in the various card name parameters, since that screws up SMW queries among other things. Do we want them for purely display parameters (such as cardgame2), or should we just completely abolish them? The fact that octothorpes in OCG/TCG card names are always superscript on the cards themselves seems to me merely a typographical nicety, as opposed to having any intrinsic meaning, so I personally don't see much reason to bother with them anywhere here. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 02:19, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

I agree they'e not needed. Like with the curly quotation marks, it just seems to be a messy styling preference. -- Deltaneos (talk) 18:23, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

They'll be released when Photon Shockwave comes out in the TCG. 5th and 6th of November for Sneak Previews and 15th of November for shops are the expected release dates. I'm not sure if they're the North American or European release dates, but they shouldn't be too far apart. The same as the others I'd imagine. Use animelore. Neither Bandai nor the first series anime used Attributes, so any Attributes you see posted in the appearances pages are most likely guesses. The anime didn't print Types on the cards, so they're probably guesses too, unless they're the same as the Bandai card. -- Deltaneos (talk) 13:13, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

Weird help question

Hi, as I am not familiar with the style that this Wiki's articles are supposed to be written in, I thought I'd ask before I did a major facelift to the articles. Many of them have differing tenses, but I learned that since it is fiction, it should all be written in present tense. Should I go ahead and do that, or do you guys have some sort of policy on this? Thanks and kind regards, {{SUBST:User:Ivystripe/sig}} 03:21, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

It depends on whether it's written from a real world or in-universe perspective.
  • Articles on episodes, chapters, series, video games, books etc. are real world articles, so they use present tense when talking about fiction.
  • Articles or characters, events, items etc. from within the series are in-universe articles. For the most part these articles are written as if the characters are real people, so use past tense. Exceptions would be the lead paragraph which acknowledges they're fictional and sections talking about how the writers created the character, item etc. -- Deltaneos (talk) 13:01, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

Preferred gallery tags

Most pages use this:

<gallery widths="175px" heights="250px">

Some pages use this:

<gallery widths="175px">

This seems to be superseded:

<gallery widths="175px" heights="250px" perrow="4">

And if I recall correctly, we don't like this:

<gallery widths="175" heights="250px" captionalign="left">

so why don't we remove the 'Add an image to this gallery' button?
That being said; which is the preferred way for doing the gallery tags? -Falzar FZ- (talk page|useful stuff) 02:41, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

I would say the one with just "widths" (that's the one I use when I edit a gallery, at least); specifying height is superfluous since the Gallery extension auto-scales images' heights to maintain their aspect ratio (and specifying it doesn't prevent the distortion bug from happening, either).
That being said, I've been giving some thought recently to the feasibility and possible implementation of a template to handle all that boilerplate code; I can't decide if the template would really be any simpler than the current system.
If Wikia has no problem with it, I'd be all for global disabling of the "Add" button on galleries. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 03:00, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

Can you also link me to perfect 'Set Card Gallery', 'Set Card Lists', 'Set Card Ratios',

To be honestly, that "Add" button in galleries are just annoy the hell out of me whenever I see them. So I must agree with Din- Phillip for them to begone. --FredCat 02:17, September 27, 2011 (UTC)
I have been maintaining and gradually improving preferred boilerplate for the Set Card namespaces at User:Dinoguy1000/boilerplate; I intended to also have boilerplate for the Card namespaces there but haven't gotten around to adding any. Eventually, almost all of this boilerplate will get replaced with one (or possibly more) template, but first I want to get {{OCG-TCG set table}} to a deployable state and figure out how to completely automate links between all the various Set Card namespace pages for a given set, without missing any or adding any inapplicable links (I could probably be talked into going ahead and making the template(s) now, though =) ). In the meantime, if you'd like to start working on missing boilerplates yourself, or see potential ways to improve the boilerplates I've already got there, feel free to edit the page as you see fit. =) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 04:09, September 27, 2011 (UTC)

That would be the preferable solution, but CSS hiding would be fine as a stopgap until one of us makes the request and Wikia acts on it. http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:K.O/Chat_Guidelines

Dark Paladin Attack!06:54, September 25, 2011 (UTC).

There isn't a "user blog" namespace on this wiki, so that page is in the main namespace, which is for the encyclopedic part of this site. I'd suggest moving it to "User:K.O/Chat Guidelines".
Wikis hosted by Wikia are licensed in the Creative Commons, so copying original non-trivial blocks of text from one usually requires you to give attribution. It might be worth linking to w:User blog:Randomtime/Chat Guidelines in an edit summary for that page, so it can be seen from the page history.
The content is fine. I'd suggest adding "racism" as an example to the "don't annoy people" or "don't talk about inappropriate things" sections, rather than give it a section of its own. I'm not sure what you mean by "anime dating". Was there meant to be a comma between the two or did you mean talking about dating-themed animes? -- Deltaneos (talk) 17:00, September 25, 2011 (UTC)

"Malefic Selector" is a apparently a Trap Card in Tag Force 6, while it was a Spell Card in the anime. What's the procedure for this situation? Do we just add the fact that it's a trap to that video game's lore, or do we change it to a Trap in CardTable2? Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 12:22, September 30, 2011 (UTC)

The logic behind video game card names being a higher priority than anime names was because the cards are playable in video games. I'd imagine that logic should be even more important when choosing which gameplay properties to use. So set CardTable2 to Trap in my opinion. -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:41, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
In that case, is there a way to open a specific video game lore parameter by default on a single page? If we could enable the Tag Force 6 lore parameter on that article by default (once the lore is added, mind you), I feel the page would be better off. Having the anime lore parameter open (which would mention that it's a Spell in the anime), but not the VG lore parameter is just confusing, IMO. What about using the main "lore" parameter for the Tag Force 6 lore? -- Deltaneos (talk) 14:55, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
I suppose that would work. And that should probably be the case on other pages like as well. The card search categories likely need to updated to use the video game effects as well. Assuming you have no issues with that, I'll start doing that if I happen to edit those pages (and will likely do a run at some point in the future to get them all that way). I've no issues with that. -- Deltaneos (talk) 19:44, September 30, 2011 (UTC)

ZEXAL Dub names

Articles are already being moved, due to advertisements for the ZEXAL dub and the facebook page. I wasn't around when 5D's was first dubbed (and actually didn't even start watching it until around the time the Arc Cradle arc started), so I'm not sure if this normal or not. I tend to consider the facebook page official enough to move the articles, but I'm not sold on using previews for stuff like this. It just seems like borderline-speculation to me (similiar to the whole Exceed-Xyz issue). They can easily enough change their minds before they episodes air and they could be called something else. However, I think if the articles were moved back, random "helpful" IPs would move them back quickly enough. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 20:20, September 30, 2011 (UTC)

IPs can't actually move pages.
I don't understand why the Facebook page is assumed to be more accurate than the the previews. Although it doesn't seem likely to me that they'll change their mind about the names, there have been a least two similar situations; a preview for the English 5D's used the term "D-Wheel" and the 4Kids website called Leo "Luka" at one point before the dub aired. -- Deltaneos (talk) 20:47, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
Well fair enough. Then make that random "helpful" autoconfirmed users.
The facebook page is from Toonzaki, I think. I'm wary of previews in general anymore to confirm anything since the whole "Stardust Dragon/Assault Mode" issue at the end of 5D's. Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 20:51, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
People are always going to want to be first to post new information, so it's pretty much all or nothing with previews. I can't see labelling some elements as facts and others as unconfirmed working. I'd still consider "Tori Meadows" and "Duel Gazer" to be official English names, even if they later get changed. One way of looking at it their the current official names, so it's okay to use them and if they get changed later, we rename pages to match the up-to-date names. Otherwise I'd say use the Japanese version names and mention on the articles that according to the preview or Facebook the English name is going to be whatever. -- Deltaneos (talk) 21:17, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I know. This reminds of my time on Wikipedia, really, since the area I worked always had unconfirmed (though almost always accurate) spoilers. I'll probably just leave them as are for now; just wanted to see your thoughts on it. Thanks, Cheesedude (talkcontribs) 21:29, September 30, 2011 (UTC)
