Summary[edit]

Yami Bakura has just captured the souls of Yugi, Joey, Tristan, and Téa and sealed them inside of Yugi's Deck, and Yami Yugi must now win them back in a Shadow Game. Yami Yugi expresses his surprise that Yami Bakura is a Shadow Game Duelist, but Yami Bakura reveals he is not the real Bakura. (In the dub, he refers to himself as a thief and a stealer of souls.) Yami Bakura says that whoever possesses all seven Millennium Items will have the power to rule the world. The pair start a Duel with Yami Yugi's Millennium Puzzle and his friends' souls at stake.

For Yami Yugi's first move, he Summons "Cyber Commander" in Defense Position, noting that it is Tristan's favorite card. To Yami Yugi's shock, Tristan emerges from the card, six inches tall and dressed as the "Cyber Commander" - he has become the card.

Before Tristan even has time to comprehend his predicament, Yami Bakura Summons "White Magical Hat" and uses it to attack and destroy "Cyber Commander". Yami Bakura says that now "Cyber Commander" and Tristan's soul are in the Graveyard. He says that the Reaper will arrive at the Graveyard soon and if it takes "Cyber Commander" away, Tristan's body will die. Meanwhile, in the Graveyard, Tristan is wandering around when he rubs some dust off a tombstone and, to his horror, finds that the tombstone has his name inscribed on it.

Yami Yugi thinks that he can't recklessly play his friends' soul cards, but at the moment, he only has one card that can defeat Yami Bakura's monster - Joey's "Flame Swordsman". He Summons it in Attack Position, and Joey emerges from the card, six inches tall and dressed as the "Flame Swordsman". Joey is surprised to see Yami Yugi. Yami Yugi explains the situation to Joey, who gets freaked out when Yami Yugi tells him about the Graveyard, but agrees to help in any way he can. Joey, without input from Yami Yugi, attacks "White Magical Hat" and destroys it, dropping Yami Bakura's Life Points to 1200.

On Yami Bakura's turn, he Sets a monster. Yami Yugi hesitates and wonders what the card is, but Joey charges forward to attack despite Yami Yugi's pleas for him to stop. The Set monster is revealed to be "Morphing Jar", which Joey slices through with his sword, but Yami Bakura and Yami Yugi reveal the Flip Effect of "Morphing Jar" - both players now must discard their hands and draw five new cards. Joey apologizes to Yami Yugi as the latter discards his hand. Yami Yugi is thankful that his discarded hand didn't contain any of his friends' soul cards, but inside his new hand is Yugi's soul card - "Dark Magician".

Yami Bakura Sets another monster as well as a face-down card. Yami Yugi thinks to himself that keeping Yugi's soul card in his hand is dangerous, so he Summons "Dark Magician" in Attack Position. Regular Yugi emerges from the card, dressed as "Dark Magician". Yami Yugi then uses "Monster Reborn" to bring back "Cyber Commander" from the Graveyard, and Tristan's soul along with it. Joey and Tristan express their confusion as to why there are two Yugis, and Yugi reveals that the one Dueling is the "other Yugi" who is a spirit dwelling inside the Millennium Puzzle. (In the dub, he's more vague, talking about how he can hear a strong voice from the Puzzle guiding him.) He apologizes for not telling the others. Joey says that it's okay - they're all friends anyway, so it doesn't matter. Yugi asks where Téa is, and Tristan says she must still be in the deck. Joey resolves to win the Duel before her card can get played. Yugi turns and uses his "Black Magic" to destroy Yami Bakura's Set monster, which is revealed to be another "Morphing Jar", which causes both Duelists to refresh their hands again. The last card in Yami Yugi's new hand is Téa's soul card - "Magician of Faith". Yami Bakura asks if Yami Yugi drew a good card. (In the dub, Yami Yugi reveals that he drew "Magician of Faith", causing Yami Bakura to taunt Yami Yugi.)

Yami Bakura Sets another monster, then activates his face-down Trap Card, "Just Desserts", which deals 500 effect damage to Yami Yugi for each monster on his field. Since there are three, Yami Yugi takes 1500 damage and his Life Points fall to 500, causing Yami Yugi to keel over in pain.

Yami Yugi thinks that Téa's soul card isn't safe in his hand, and so he Sets "Magician of Faith", feeling that Téa would be more safe on the field. Téa peeks out from under the face-down card, causing the other monsters to gather around her card and try to hide her from view. The gang explains the situation to Téa. During this, Joey tells Téa that there's a "cool" Yugi and a "regular" Yugi. (In the dub, the adjective "regular" is instead "puny".) In order to prove that he can be cool too, Yugi uses "Black Magic" to attack Yami Bakura's Set "Electric Lizard", but he soon regrets it when the card gives him an electric shock, causing his body to go numb. Yami Bakura explains that when a non-Zombie monster attacks "Electric Lizard", it will be unable to attack next turn. (In the dub, Yami Bakura is more vague, saying that little Yugi has learned a lesson he won't soon forget.) Yami Yugi Sets "Horn of Heaven" face-down.

Yami Bakura Sets another monster, which he declares to be "Man-Eater Bug". Yugi explains that when "Man-Eater Bug" is flipped face-up, it can destroy one monster on the opponent's field. Joey wants to attack it, but Yugi says it's worthless, as the card will flip face-up if it's attacked. Joey asks if there's any way they can stop it from being Flip Summoned, and Yugi says it's possible if they use "Horn of Heaven", but that the card requires a sacrifice to be used.

Tristan resolves to go, but Joey uses the hilt of the sword of "Flame Swordsman" to knock him over. He says that he'll be the one to face Yami Bakura, and charges in, to Yugi and Téa's objections. Joey lands on top of "Man-Eater Bug", which emerges from the card and the two begin to struggle. Joey calls to Yami Yugi, who uses "Horn of Heaven", sacrificing "Flame Swordsman" and Joey's soul to negate the Flip Summon of "Man-Eater Bug" and destroy it. "Flame Swordsman" and "Man-Eater Bug" are destroyed simultaneously. Yami Bakura laughs and says they'll all be sent there anyway soon enough.

In the Graveyard, Joey is chased by the "Reaper of the Cards", trips over a rock and falls to the ground. Téa begins to cry over losing Joey. A single tear drops to the ground, which activates her Flip Effect, allowing Yami Yugi to add a Spell Card from the Graveyard back to his hand. He adds back "Monster Reborn" and immediately activates it, bringing back "Flame Swordsman" and Joey's soul from the Graveyard, just as the "Reaper" was about to swipe Joey with his scythe. Yami Yugi says that the friendship the gang shares creates miracles, but Yami Bakura laughs and says that he'll show Yami Yugi that friendship never lasts forever.

Bakura as "Change of Heart"

Yami Bakura Summons "Lady of Faith" in Attack Position and then reveals a Spell in his hand - "Change of Heart", Bakura's favorite card. Yami Bakura says that when he activates it, he'll be able to turn "Dark Magician" Yugi against his friends. He declares that the gang's friendship is over and activates "Change of Heart". However, when "Change of Heart" is activated, normal Bakura emerges and appears as the angel on the card, as it is his favorite card. He flies over to "Lady of Faith" and uses the effect of "Change of Heart" to take control of it. He volunteers to be destroyed by Yugi, but Yugi doesn't want to attack his friend as that would send him to the Graveyard. However, Yami Yugi uses his Millennium Puzzle's power to switch the places of Bakura and Yami Bakura's souls, turning Yami Bakura into the "Lady of Faith" and normal Bakura into Yami Yugi's opponent. Yami Yugi orders "Dark Magician" to attack "Lady of Faith", and Yugi uses "Black Magic" to destroy "Lady of Faith", send Yami Bakura's soul to the Graveyard, and reduce Bakura's Life Points to 0, winning the Shadow Game. In the Graveyard, Yami Bakura curses the failure of his plan, and the "Reaper of the Cards" appears behind him, causing him to scream.

As the dust settles, everyone's souls return back where they belong. Yugi asks Bakura where he got his Millennium Ring, and Bakura reveals that the Ring was a gift from his father, who had bought it in Egypt from an unusual looking merchant. He says that the merchant was from the Shadow Realm. Joey, Tristan and Téa wake up, feeling like they were dreaming, only to see the real Bakura right in front of them, which momentarily freaks them out again.

Suddenly, everyone hears a loud scream in the distance and they run to see where it came from.

Right after "Change of Heart" is activated, it is revealed that Bakura Ryou's soul was locked inside "Change of Heart" as it is his favorite card. He then takes over "Lady of Faith" to prevent Yami Bakura from winning the Duel.

Bakura Ryou then tells his friends to attack him as they will be able to defeat Yami Bakura that way, but Little Yugi and his friends refuse because they don't want to send their friend to the Graveyard. This argument continues until Yami Yugi intervenes and uses his Millennium Puzzle to make Bakura Ryou and Yami Bakura swap places. This makes Bakura Ryou Yami Yugi's opponent while Yami Bakura becomes "Lady of Faith".

Turn 13: Yami Yugi
"Dark Magician"/Little Yugi attacks and destroys "Lady of Faith"/Yami Bakura, sending him to the Graveyard (Bakura Ryou: 1200 → 0 LP).

Differences in adaptions[edit]

  • In the dub, Yami Bakura takes everyone to the Shadow Realm before he traps them in the cards. In the Japanese version he creates a Shadow Game.
  • When Tristan finds his tombstone in the Graveyard, it says "Honda Hiroto" in Japanese. In the dub, the Japanese writing is first seen on it from a far-away scene, but when he lowers down in a close-up, the tombstone is blank until he wipes it and the Japanese words are replaced with TRISTAN TAYLOR in English writing in the dub.
  • The shot of Yami Bakura clutching his chest in pain as his life points go down is changed in the US version to show him frowning.
  • The words on the duel mat have been removed in the US version, though they can be briefly seen in the previous episode when the group collapses after having their souls removed.
  • In the Japanese version, the card dealer shows Bakura's father, "Seven-Armed Fiend", has an ATK and DEF of 666. Both were changed to 1000 for English audiences.
  • In the original, Yugi was consciously aware of The Other Yugi's existence and confessed he had kept his identity a secret from his friends. In the dub, Yugi was not aware of his existence and simply stated whenever he was dueling, he felt as if he was guided by someone.
  • When the first "Morphing Jar" was destroyed in the dub, Yami stated they were lucky Tea's soul card, "Magician of Faith" wasn't in his hand. In the original, he stated he was lucky he didn't have any soul cards in his hand.
  • In the Japanese dub, The Other Yugi explicitly states a player is allowed up to three copies of each card in a deck. Since this episode aired in the early days of the card game, players who never read the official rules or played a video game may not be aware of this. In the dub, Yami Yugi cryptically hints the rule when he said Tea's soul card isn't safe in his hand.

Errors[edit]

Magician of Faith with the incorrect stats
  • When Joey first turns around as the Flame Swordsman to see the "giant" Yugi, his card is turned around as well, with the attack and defense points pointing towards Yami Bakura. This happens again as Joey apologizes for attacking the morphing jar.
  • In the dub, "Reborn the Monster" has the usual altered artwork, but when it is activated the first time (to resurrect Tristan), the ankh of the original artwork can be briefly seen glowing.
  • In the dub, when Tea's tears activate Magician of Faith's special ability, the camera zooms out to show Tea's card with Dark Magician's card.
  • In the dub, when Yami drew "Dark Magician" he acted as if he was really Yugi and ponders what would happen if he played it.
