Summary[edit]

Maximillion Pegasus is sitting in the dining hall of Pegasus Castle, talking with The Big Five via video call. They inform him that Seto Kaiba is headed to Duelist Kingdom and that they will make sure he never reaches the island. However, Pegasus stops them, telling them not to lay a finger on Kaiba. Pegasus tells them that there will be no problems, as their contract will take effect when he defeats Yugi. (In the dub, the Big Five also worry that keeping Kaiba around will jeopardize Mokuba Kaiba's status as figurehead.) He says that once they take control of KaibaCorp, they will have access to not only the company's technology, but Kaiba's knowledge as well. Pegasus looks out the window of the castle and says that he looks forward to meeting Kaiba.

Meanwhile, Kaiba is in a helicopter, with Duelist Kingdom in sight. He thinks about his duel against Yugi and how Yugi told him afterwards that cards without heart are meaningless. Kaiba thinks that he wants to battle Yugi again — but first, there is someone else he must defeat, using his Duel Disk System — Pegasus, the man who plotted with traitors and kidnapped Mokuba. As his helicopter approaches the island, he vows to defeat Pegasus. (In the dub, his rage is also targeted at The Big Five, as they abandoned him after a single defeat and plotted against him.)

At the gang's campsite, Téa is fast asleep in the group's only tent, while Joey and Tristan sleep right outside. However, Yugi and Bakura are still awake and talking. Bakura shows Yugi how one of his Millennium Ring's spokes is pointing in the direction of Pegasus Castle. Bakura recounts the day he transferred into Domino High School and watched Yugi and Joey Dueling. His Millennium Ring's spoke began pointing at Yugi's Millennium Puzzle. Yugi hypothesizes that Bakura's Millennium Ring is able to detect other Millennium Items. Bakura says that he doesn't know what the Items are, or where they came from. Later on, after Bakura has drifted off to sleep, Yugi lies awake, thinking about how he wants to solve the mystery of his other self, and by doing so, he may be able to free his grandfather.

Suddenly, a helicopter rises above the cliff in which the gang is sleeping, shining a bright light onto the campsite. Joey, Tristan, Téa, and Bakura are all woken up by the noise. The helicopter lands, and out of it steps Kaiba, holding a briefcase. Yugi walks up to him, and Kaiba greets him. Yugi gives Kaiba his Deck back, which was stolen from him by Pegasus' goons. Kaiba takes the Deck and begins to walk off, but Yugi calls to him, asking if he learned about the Heart of the Cards. (In the dub, Yugi asks if Kaiba wants to tag along with the rest of the gang.) Kaiba says he does not have an answer yet, but he will do anything to defeat Pegasus and save Mokuba.

Joey is angered by Kaiba's response. He runs up to him and grabs him by the collar, lecturing him about how everyone on the island is fighting to achieve their dreams by collecting Star Chips to battle Pegasus, and Kaiba can't just cut in line. Kaiba grabs Joey's hand and yanks it forward, causing him to fall to the ground. Kaiba says that he can't believe that someone like Joey was able to enter the tournament, and that it must be pretty lame. (In the dub, Kaiba tells Joey to go find someone he can beat, like a monkey). Kaiba begins walking away again, but Joey calls to Kaiba and says that he is not as weak as before, with Yugi backing him up. He challenges Kaiba to a Duel, despite the gang's objections.

Kaiba turns around and says Joey's offer is interesting. He says that he will accept, on one condition — Joey will help Kaiba test his new Duel Disk System. He opens his briefcase, which contains plenty of rare cards and two circular devices. He tosses one to Joey, which the latter catches with one hand. Kaiba tells Joey that the Disk allows for virtual simulation Duels without the need for a Duel Arena. He tells Joey to put the deck holder on his left arm and to insert his deck in it. The pair will then take cards from the deck holder and play them by placing them on the Disk.

Kaiba demonstrates by placing his "Battle Ox" on the Duel Disk and throwing it onto the field. "Battle Ox" emerges from the Disk, with Kaiba explaining that the Disk's technology transforms the card into Solid Vision in real time. Yugi wonders at this new technology, saying that Kaiba has taken card battling to a whole new level, as "Battle Ox" stares down Joey. (In the dub, Tristan and Téa say that this is something out of a dream, and Kaiba claims that the Disk even simulates the odor of "Battle Ox"). Joey places a card on his Duel Disk and tosses it onto the field, and "Armored Lizard" emerges with a cry. Kaiba orders "Battle Ox" to attack with "Axe Slam Attack", and it hits the neck of "Armored Lizard" with its axe. Joey thinks that "Armored Lizard" survived, but Kaiba says otherwise as "Battle Ox" cuts through the neck of "Armored Lizard" and destroys it. Joey's Life Points fall to 1800 and "Armored Lizard" is ejected from the Disk, with Kaiba telling him to retrieve it.

Joey is angered at Kaiba's belittling of him, and Summons "Flame Swordsman", thinking that it has more ATK than "Battle Ox". He orders it to attack with "Flaming Sword of Battle", but Yugi cries out that it will not work, as "Battle Ox" is strong against FIRE monsters. "Flame Swordsman" is destroyed, Joey's LP falls to 1600, and Kaiba says that he knew Joey was the weakest Duelist in history. He places "Polymerization" and "Mystic Horseman" on his Duel Disk, Fusion Summoning a more powerful monster: "Rabid Horseman". Unafraid, Joey Summons "Swamp Battleguard", but it is quickly destroyed by the more powerful "Rabid Horseman". Joey keeps attacking with more monsters: "Axe Raider", "Battle Steer", "Garoozis", "Rock Ogre Grotto #1", and "Rude Kaiser", but "Rabid Horseman" destroys them all one by one, reducing Joey's LP down to a mere 500.

Joey is gasping for air, and slumps to the ground. Kaiba asks him if he is done already, and Joey despairs that he cannot win. However, Téa, Tristan and Bakura rouse Joey to his feet with words of encouragement, and Joey says that he is not giving up. (In the dub, Joey is simply strategizing, and Kaiba refers to him as a whimpering dog. Téa comments on Joey's comeback skills.)

Joey summons his "Red-Eyes Black Dragon", and Tristan exclaims that Joey's trump card is here. "Red-Eyes" attacks and destroys "Rabid Horseman" using "Inferno Fire Blast", and Kaiba's Life Points drop to 1600. However, Kaiba says that winning one battle is hardly a reason to celebrate, as he reveals his next card: "Blue-Eyes White Dragon". Joey is shocked, as Kaiba orders "Blue-Eyes" to attack with "White Lightning", wiping out "Red-Eyes" and with it the rest of Joey's Life Points.

Joey falls to his knees in despair as the rest of the gang rush over to help him. Kaiba says that their battle showed Joey how terrifying Dueling can be, and that he has no idea how an amateur like Joey won any Duels at all. He says that Joey looks good on his hands and knees. Téa takes offense to this, saying that Kaiba does not know what Joey is fighting for, and Yugi attempts to explain, but Joey tells them both to stop talking. Kaiba says that even the weakest of Duelists have reason to fight, and what is truly important is if the burden crushes you or if you keep fighting for it. He says that Joey has the eyes of a loser scared to fight, and that he will never be a Duelist again. (In the dub, Kaiba continues to refer to Joey as a dog, scrounging for scraps of mercy from real Duelists, and says that Pegasus would not have been any more merciful than he was.)

Yugi asks why Kaiba is the way he is, and Kaiba points to Pegasus Castle. He says that Pegasus is the creator of Duel Monsters and has limitless power, having invented the game's rules and all the cards. He says that the Duelists battling for Star Chips are all Pegasus' pawns. He tells Yugi that even his skills are not enough to defeat Pegasus. (In the dub, he says that to stand a chance against Pegasus, he will have to play by his own, ruthless rules.)

Kaiba flashes back to the one time he saw Pegasus Duel, at the United States The King of Duelists Championship held at New York Duel Stadium, to which Kaiba was invited as a guest (Pegasus' guest of honor in the dub). The final match was Pegasus facing the United States' top money earner, Bandit Keith, known as such because he walked away with the prize money from every tournament. Keith remarked that when he wins the Duel, he would be number one in the world. He celebrated his excellent draw, but soon realized Pegasus was not even paying attention to the Duel. Pegasus scribbled something on a piece of paper, and then invited a child from the audience named Sam to Duel in his place. Keith told Pegasus to stop messing around, as Sam asked Pegasus if he really thought he could win. Pegasus told Sam that if he followed the instructions Pegasus wrote down, his victory would be assured. Pegasus sat down next to Kaiba and started small talk about Kaiba's proposal for a new simulation system, proposing a partnership. Meanwhile, Keith thought that Pegasus had ran away scared, and Summoned a strong monster, "Garnecia Elefantis". Sam read Pegasus' instructions, which said that he should Summon "Flying Elephant" in Attack Position, which Sam says will stop Keith's "Fissure". (In the dub, "Fissure" is not mentioned and Sam instead says "Uh, I think I just took all your Life Points"). Keith is shocked that Sam knew his strategies, and grabs the sheet of paper, which agitates him even more as Pegasus chuckles. Sam won the Duel and Pegasus held his hand up to the audience as Keith remained on his hands and knees.

Kaiba says that he does not know what trick Pegasus used, but thinks that his trick might not work with Duel Disks. Yugi flashes back to when Pegasus used the same power against him. Kaiba says that he will invade Pegasus Castle and defeat Pegasus, no matter what, to get back what he has lost. Yugi quickly transforms into Yami Yugi and says that just like Kaiba, they have things they cannot afford to lose too. He says that he will defeat Pegasus. Kaiba responds that he will be the first one to invade the Castle, and walks away. (In the dub, Yugi never transforms, and they instead wish each other good luck, with Kaiba saying that he hopes their paths do not cross again.) Meanwhile, Pegasus looks out from his castle window, holding a glass of wine and chuckling.

Mistakes[edit]

  • For a split second you can see the Japanese Life Points counter the second time the Life Points screen appears after "Armored Lizard" is destroyed.
  • In the Japanese version, when Battle Ox is summoned, the graphic has its DEF at 900 instead of 1000.

Differences in adaptations[edit]

  • Shots of Kaiba's briefcase are cut out from the dub version.
  • Yami Yugi's image is added over the moon in the dub version.
  • A close-up of the axe that "Battle Ox" owned sinking then cutting into the neck of "Armored Lizard" is cut from the US version.
  • The writing scrolling across the bottom of the stadium display screens is removed from the US Version, even though it's unreadable.
  • Yami Yugi's appearances at the end of the episode are replaced with Yugi's.
  • When Kaiba throws Joey to the ground, Bakura tells Yugi to check Joey's pulse in the US adaptation.
  • In the Japanese version, Joey challenges Kaiba because he's angry that Kaiba wants to go to Pegasus' castle without having any Star Chips and to show him how much he progressed, while in the US adaptation, it's just because Kaiba is too pretentious and says that Joey and Yugi are just playing.

Featured cards[edit]

The following cards appeared in this episode. Cards in italics debuted here.

Notes[edit]
