"The Reason They're After Us!" (狙われる理由! Nerawareru Riyū!) is the twenty-fourth chapter of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V manga.

This chapter was first printed in Japanese in the September 2017 issue of V Jump, released on July 21, 2017, and in English in the July 24, 2017 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump.

Yuya and Reiji slowly get closer to learning the truth behind Eve and the G.O.D. card, as her assassins go after them - this time, Isaac, who confronts Reiji in a Duel between scientists.

Summary[edit]

After finally learning the secret to the divine power of Ren's White Aura Biphamet, Yuya Sakaki unleashes his last trick - using the particle accelerator the Duel is taking place to turbo charge his own Duel Runner - to take the lead in their Duel. Using the combined power of his Odd-Eyes Phantasma Dragon and Yugo's Clearwing Fast Dragon, Yuya destroys both heads of his opponent's monster, finally destroying it and reducing Ren's LP to 0. However, even as Yuya defeats one of the mysterious Eve's allies, in the first battle for Genesis Omega Dragon, another has located Reiji Akaba, and moves to confront him. In a Leo Corporation space station far above the Earth, a sensor informs Reiji that a new presence has come aboard, and he notes that they've finally showed up.

Back on Earth, Yuzu Hiiragi celebrates Yuya's victory from the control room of the abandoned particle accelerator. She's soon cut short by one of the screens very suddenly crackling to life. Meanwhile, Yuya approaches Ren, who has been thrown from his Duel Runner. Even with the damage he took from the Duel, both from the crash and the sickness eating away at him, Ren commends Yuya for his brilliant Dueling, and asks that he tell Yugo, his ancestor, that he enjoyed riding with him. Yuya says he can tell Yugo himself, but Ren states that he doesn't have that sort of strength now.

When G.O.D. granted them the power to surpass time and space, it also ceased their aging, putting the aged Ren back at the prime of his life; however, that same power has also been eating away at their bodies, causing the dark, burn-like scars that is covering half his face now. This is the price they've had to pay, for the power to see their dreams to reality. Yuya demands to know exactly what this Adam Factor is, and Ren explains that it is an illusion that Eve is chasing. An illusion of her lost lover, Adam, whose soul was scattered across time and space when G.O.D. appeared. The fragments of his soul, the Adam Factor, now reside in Yuya Sakaki in Reiji Akaba.

When the completed Adam Factor and the Eve Factor possessed by Eve herself come together, G.O.D. will awaken completely, and use its power to control time itself. When it does, it will control everyone - past, present, and future - without them ever knowing it. Yuya demands that Ren explain more, but at that moment, a portal begins to open beneath Ren, and he tells Yuya that he's out of time for that. Ren tells Yuya instead that he sold his fate to G.O.D. just so he could live his dream. But Adam, he chose Yuya, and so he may be able to resist the temptation of G.O.D.'s power, and take control of his own destiny. Yuya is confused by what Ren means by that, but Ren simply says that he'll see soon enough, as the portal carries him away.

In a distant place, Ren lies in a deep sleep inside Eve's base, watched over by Sora Shiunin. Sora says sadly that this means his collection of Duel Runners is going to start collecting dust now, since he's accomplished his life's work. But Sora hasn't reached his goal yet, not until he defeats Yuya Sakaki. He may have lost last time, but now that his true memories have returned, he's different. Ren gave up his fate for his dreams, but for Sora, the world that G.O.D. will create is his dream.

Back at the course, Yuzu approaches Yuya, who thanks her for noticing the button he had set up earlier. Yuzu asks what happened to that guy who looked like Yugo, and Yuya explains that he's disappeared just like Sora did a few weeks ago, back to his base. Yuzu points out that he said he was Yugo's descendant, and asks how that could be possible, if Yugo is one of Yuya's other personalities. Yuya is about to explain, but Yuzu interjects by asking if that meant that Ren was Yuya's ancestor, which Yuya is sure isn't the case. Yuzu (who still hasn't been filled in on what's happening) admits that would be crazy, as that would mean that Ren was from the future.

As Yuzu tries to figure this out, Yuya thinks back to the things he saw when Yugo pushed him to the depths of his heart - his true memories, and memories of his childhood. Pushing aside the implications of those memories, Yuya simply tells Yuzu that it will all make sense eventually. But if Yuya doesn't know (from her perspective), then Yuzu concludes that that Ren guy must have just been crazy. At that moment, Yuzu remembers why she came out here, and tells Yuya that something's appeared in the control room.

There, Yuzu shows Yuya the monitor, where live footage of Reiji Akaba is on-screen. Yuya thinks to himself that Reiji intended for them to see this. Yuzu points out that the object in the background looks like a planet, and Yuya, equally shocked, realizes that it's the Earth. And that would mean that Reiji is in space.

Inside the Leo Corporation space station, a voice calls out to Reiji, remarking that this is quite the odd venue, but the view is magnificent. No matter the era, the Earth is quite the shining gem in space. A man with a large, burnlike scar covering his face approaches Reiji, surprised that Reiji has a place such as this. Reiji remarks that in his hands, the Solid Vision system has unlimited potential. The stranger looks out on the station, and wonders if all the bulidings he sees - thousands and thousands of them - are all test facilities. With all this room to work with, in this massive station, the contributions that Reiji could make to humanity would be incalculable.

Reiji agrees, saying that that is in fact what this facility is for. Yet, despite that, he must now use it as a battleground. Speaking of which, Reiji notes that it's surprising that the stranger made it here. The stranger remarks that there is no place that they, who can travel space and time, cannot reach. Aside from that though, the stranger is grateful to have the oppurtunity to discuss matters with his target calmly. Reiji asks if that would make him another of Eve's agents.

The stranger confirms this, and realizes that he never introduced himself. He is Isaac, a scientist like Reiji. Reiji points out that the one sent after Yuya failed in his task, but Isaac doubts that Ren would have regrets about losing. Ren's quest was more for a certain peace of mind. Reiji questions why exactly their faction is targeting him and Yuya Sakaki, but Isaac says that Reiji already knows - the Adam Factor, a force that is limiting G.O.D.'s power. Adam's curse, or rather, his soul, if that would be easier for Reiji to process.

Reiji notes that "Adam" sounds like someone's name, and Isaac tells him that Adam was the first person to discover G.O.D.. Reiji and Yuya believe that their fathers, Leo Akaba and Yusho Sakaki, did the deed, but they're incorrect. Leo and Yusho merely resurrected G.O.D. into their own time. In short, G.O.D. manipulated them for its own purposes. Reiji roars at Isaac to shut up. Isaac notes that Reiji's fist is trembling, and Reiji's stony look has turned into a baleful glare. He continues that it would be unpleasant to hear the achievements of one's father denied, even if it is the truth. Alas, he spends most of his days in a lab, so he's rather bad at reading others' feelings, and so he apologizes to Reiji.

Ignoring him, Reiji asks what will happen to him, if Isaac takes the Adam Factor he possesses. Isaac, however, doesn't know the answer to that. What he does know is that, for certain reasons, Adam manifested the power of G.O.D. in the form of a card, and so the Adam Factor must be extracted through a Duel. And the prevailing theory is that, if Reiji is defeated, G.O.D. will most likely infuse the Adam Factor, with Reiji attached, into itself. Reiji asks if "infuse" means "destruction", but Isaac coughs and admits he doesn't know that either. With all the gaps in his knowledge, he's perhaps not the greatest scientist in the world.

Isaac readies his Duel Disk. He apologizes to Reiji, but no matter what happens to them, he must defeat them for Eve's sake. He swore to her that he would make her dreams a reality, by any means. Reiji readies his own Disk, accepting this challenge, and warns Isaac that he'll never learn what will happen to him if he loses, because neither him nor his allies will ever beat him in a Duel. Isaac laughs and wonders if Reiji is making a joke. He does enjoy a good joke.

The Duel begins, and Reiji takes the first turn. To begin, he Sets all five cards in his hand, then ends his turn. Isaac is quite entertained by the intimidating mystery of Reiji's move as he begins his own turn. Isaac sets the Scale 6 Mirror Imagine Primary 6 and the Scale 9 Mirror Imagine Secondary 9 in his Pendulum Zones. With his Scale set, he can Pendulum Summon monsters from his hand or face-up Extra Deck from Level 7 to 8 at the same time. To end his turn, Isaac sets the four remaining cards in his hand.

Isaac remarks that the scene looks like a pair of gunslingers about to start a shootout. Reiji prepares to begin his turn, remarking that he's starting to enjoy this situation as well.
