"Yugi vs. Atem!!" (ゆう VSバーサスアテム!! Yūgi Bāsasu Atemu!!) is the 339th chapter of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga.

The kanji in the Japanese title is normally read as Yūgi Bāsasu Ō!!, meaning "Yugi vs. King!!" or "Game vs. King!!" and contains the two portions of the series name Yu-Gi-Oh! (Yūgiō!), literally Game King. The furigana makes the name of the chapter Yūgi Bāsasu Atemu!!, meaning "Yugi vs. Atem!!".

In its first English printing, it was numbered as the 61st chapter of Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium World. In the 3-in-1 edition, its number was changed to match the original Japanese printing.

Yugi Mutou's Ceremonial Duel with Atem begins to decide their fates. Both Duelists showcase a variety of new strategies, holding nothing back from the start of the match.

Summary[edit]

The Rite of the Duel is recited: "Place the seven ancient treasures in the slab of memory and speak the name of the king. Then the door to the afterlife will open and welcome the Pharaoh's soul. However...before the door opens, the Wadjet Eye must judge the worth of the Pharaoh...and the one who will take the king's sword and quiet his restless soul..."

Atem and Yugi face off before the glowing Millennium Stone. Atem silently thanks his partner for taking on this challenge, but Atem is a Duelist and no matter the cost he'll put everything into defeating his opponent - this is his pride. Yugi thinks that he has to be strong, because if he isn't Atem will never be free from his heart, and so he must defeat him. Jonouchi isn't sure who to root for and notes that the other Yugi will leave them if Yugi wins, and nothing will change if the other Yugi wins, but then Yugi will never stand alone. Anzu meanwhile thinks to herself that she wants the other Yugi - Atem - to stay with them, as she can't stand to see him go. Ishizu declares that this trial will decide both their fates because their two souls have always been joined in one heart and they are the only ones who can find the answer. Atem tells Yugi "Let's go!" and Yugi agrees with his silent signature "Yup!" before they both call "Duel!"

Atem takes the lead, drawing a card to make seven in his hand, including "Monster Reborn", and he sends a card from his hand to the Graveyard to Special Summon "The Tricky" in Attack Position, then Sets a card face-down and ends his turn.

Yugi declares his turn and draws, noting that Atem Special Summoned a 2000 ATK monster right off the bat, so in that case he activates a Spell Card, "Swords of Revealing Light". As the swords of light rain down, Jonouchi gasps that Yugi used the "Swords" on his first turn to prevent the other Yugi from attacking for three turns, noting that Yugi isn't holding back. Atem chuckles and Yugi also Summons "Green Gadget" in Attack Position, then Sets a card to end his turn.

Atem declares his turn, and as he draws he notes that Yugi's using a basic strategy, protecting himself from Atem's monsters until he can gather enough sacrifices to Summon a high-Level monster, but his partner should know that the "Swords of Revealing Light" can't block all attacks. He plays a Spell Card from his hand, "Rebellion", and Yugi is shocked to see that Atem had that card, which will force "Green Gadget" to attack Yugi. Marik gasps Yugi's name, but Yugi smiles that he knew Atem would do that, much to Atem's surprise. Yugi activates the Trap Field Monster "Stronghold the Moving Fortress", which shields him from the attack. Sugoroku cheers Yugi's move, which negated "Rebellion" and saved Yugi's Life Points, and Bakura wishes them both luck.

Atem ends his turn, and Yugi declares his turn and draws. Glancing at his draw in recognition, he thinks to his other self that he's coming; he already has all the cards in his hand for a special combo. He pays 1000 Life Points to activate the Spell Card "Ties of the Brethren", Summoning two monsters from his Deck with the same Type as one on the field. Yugi's Life Points fall to 3000 as he tells the "Gadgets" to come to him, "Red Gadget" and "Yellow Gadget". Atem notes that Yugi has three monsters, but they can't attack or be sacrificed, and he tells Yugi that he can't defeat him with mere defensive tactics. But Yugi replies that they aren't for defense and are all steps in his attack, much to Atem's surprise. Yugi tells the "Gadgets" to become the gears of the fort, and the three "Gadgets" fly into the air and each slot into the recesses on "Stronghold" as Atem watches in shock. With the three "Gadgets" fitted into "Stronghold", its gears begin to turn and the "Moving Fortress" awakens. Atem realizes that it's a fusion attack and Jonouchi gasps that Yugi's got his game going as Yugi explains that "Stronghold" is usually a Field card, but when joined with the three "Gadgets" he becomes "Stronghold" the fort monster, with 3000 ATK.

He orders "Stronghold" to get Atem, but Atem smiles and the "Swords of Revealing Light" suddenly appear to trap "Stronghold". Atem has played "Bounce", also known as "Magic Transfer", to switch the "Swords" to Yugi's monsters, and he admits that Yugi's strategy wasn't bad, it wasn't good enough.

Featured Duel: Yugi Mutou vs. Atem[edit]

During this Duel, both players start the game with six cards in their opening hands instead of five.

Turn 1: Atem
Atem's hand contains "Monster Reborn" and six unknown cards. Atem discards one card to Special Summon "The Tricky" (2000/1200) in Attack Position. Atem Sets a card.

Turn 2: Yugi
Yugi activates the Spell Card "Swords of Revealing Light", preventing Atem from attacking for three of his turns. Yugi Normal Summons "Green Gadget" (1400/600) in Attack Position. Yugi Sets a card.

Turn 3: Atem
Atem activates the Spell Card "Rebellion", allowing him to choose one monster Yugi controls to attack him. Atem chooses "Green Gadget", which attacks Yugi directly. As he was attacked directly, Yugi activates the Trap Field Monster "Stronghold the Moving Fortress", negating the attack and Special Summoning itself in Defense Position (0/2000).

Turn 4: Yugi
Yugi activates the Spell Card "Ties of the Brethren", paying 1000 Life Points (Yugi 4000 → 3000) to Special Summon two Level 4 or lower monsters from his Deck with the same Type, but they cannot attack or be Sacrificed. Yugi Special Summons "Yellow Gadget" (???/1200) and "Red Gadget" (???/1500) in Defense Position. As Yugi controls "Green Gadget", "Yellow Gadget" and "Red Gadget", "Stronghold the Moving Fortress" switches to Attack Position and gains 3000 ATK ("Stronghold": 0 → 3000). "Stronghold" attacks "The Tricky", but Atem activates his Set Spell Card "Bounce", allowing him to apply the effect of a Spell Card to another player's field. Atem transfers the effect of "Swords of Revealing Light" to Yugi, preventing "Stronghold" from attacking.

Duel continues in the next chapter.
