Black fog surrounding a Shadow Game of Duel Monsters

A Shadow Game (闇のゲーム Yami no Gēmu, literally Game of Darkness or Dark Game) is a contest in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, series generally between two people that involves a Penalty Game for the loser. It is based on the Shadow Game concept from the manga.

Shadow Games are usually played via Games of Duel Monsters with one player using the power of a Millennium Item to change the nature of the game; A thick black fog typically surrounds the game, lifelike versions of Monster Cards appear when they are played, even without the use of Solid Vision, players may suffer in different ways during the game or by means of a Penalty Game should they lose. (In the English dub, the Duel is said to take place in the Shadow Realm when the fog appears.)

The term "Shadow Duel" is also used to describe a Shadow Games of Duel Monsters. This term is also used in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, and Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL, where Shadow Duels are not explicitly stated to be Shadow Games.

History[edit]

In ancient Egypt Shadow Games were magical ceremonies that determined the fate of citizens and Kings. When Yugi Muto solved the Millennium Puzzle in the twentieth century, he became heir to the Shadow Games and the guardian of justice.[1][2]

Yami Bakura turned a game of Duel Monsters that Yugi Muto, Joey Wheeler, Téa Gardner, and Tristan Taylor were about to play against Bakura Ryou into a Shadow Game. Each of the aforementioned characters had their soul sealed in their favorite card. Yami Yugi then took control of Yugi's body and played the Shadow Game with Yami Bakura to save his friends. When a person's favorite card was played, that person would be Summoned, dressed as the card and could act on their own violation rather than obey the commands of the person who played the card. If they were destroyed, they would go the Graveyard, where they would be pursued by the Reaper of the Cards. While most characters chose a Monster Card, Bakura Ryou choose the Magic Card, "Change of Heart". After it was used, his soul continued to embody the card targeted by the Magic Card. Yami Bakura lost the Duel when Yami Yugi swapped the places of the two Bakura's souls and destroyed the card Yami Bakura dwelled in.[3][4]
