Tribute is usually a way of Voluntarily discarding a card from the field, to the Graveyard, often used to unlock a card effect.
- Exiled Force can be tributed immediately, to destroy one monster on the field.
- Monsters are Tributed for a Tribute Summon.
- Ritual Monsters require their corresponding Ritual Spell Card and a tribute of monsters whose total Level equals the Level of the Ritual Monster in order for it to be summoned to the field. This is considered a Special Summon.
Monsters used in a Tribute Summon are treated slightly differently, and some cards speciflcally prohibit other cards from being used as Tribute for a Tribute Summon. Goat Tokens from Scapegoat are a notable example.
