A Pendulum Scale (Japanese: ペンデュラムスケール Pendyuramu Sukēru, abbreviated Pスケール in card text) is a set of indicators unique to Pendulum Monsters. Two of them are located above the "Monster Effect" text box of the Pendulum Monster, with the "Pendulum Effect" of the Pendulum Monster placed between them. All Pendulum Monster have two Pendulum Scale values, signified by the blue symbol and the red symbol.

On Pendulum Monster Cards, the Pendulum Scale is printed twice, on either side of the Pendulum Effect text box. On the left side it is printed with a blue marker, while on the right side it is printed with a red marker. Despite being printed twice, the two values are always equal, as monsters only have one Pendulum Scale.
Pendulum Scales are used in Pendulum Summoning. You can Pendulum Summon monsters from the hand and/or Pendulum Monsters that have been sent face-up to the Extra Deck whose Levels are in between the Pendulum Scale values. In the anime, the Pendulum Scale appears as a glowing number below the Pendulum Monster when it is in the Pendulum Zone.

The official rulebook states that a Pendulum Monster placed in the left Pendulum Zone uses its left Pendulum Scale value and a Pendulum Monster placed in the right Pendulum Zone uses its right Pendulum Scale value, implying that monsters may have different Pendulum Scale values written on the card. However, all currently known Pendulum Monsters have the same value in both of their Pendulum Scales.

As with a monster's Level/Rank, ATK, and DEF, there appear to be some unofficial 'rules' that govern how high or low a monster's Pendulum Scale values may be. A monster's Pendulum Scales may be as low as 2 or as high as 7 normally; having a Scale of 1 or lower or a Scale of 8 or higher requires that the monster's Pendulum Effect have negative conditions that restrict its use.

Pendulum Scale symbols

A Pendulum Scale (Japanese: ペンデュラムスケール Pendyuramu Sukēru, abbreviated ペンデュラムスケール in card text) (abbreviated as "PS" or "PSC" in the manga), is a property possessed by Pendulum Monsters. When performing a Pendulum Summon, the Pendulum Scales of the Pendulum Monsters in the Pendulum Zones determine the possible Levels of monsters that can be Summoned.

In the anime, the Pendulum Scale appears as a glowing number below the Pendulum Monster when it is in the Pendulum Zone.

Mechanics[edit]

The Pendulum Scales of "Stargazer Magician" and "Timegazer Magician"

If a player has Pendulum Monsters in both of their Pendulum Zones, once per turn they can perform a Pendulum Summon. A Pendulum Summon allows the player to Summon any number of monsters from their hand and face-up Extra Deck whose Levels are strictly between the Pendulum Scales of the two Pendulum Monsters in the Pendulum Zones. (Therefore, monsters cannot be Pendulum Summoned if the monsters in the two Pendulum Zones have the same Scale, or Scales that differ by one.)

A monster's Pendulum Scale may change from its printed number during a Duel due to other card effects. Currently in the OCG/TCG, a monster's original Pendulum Scale may range from 0 to 13; no effects can currently reduce a Pendulum Scale to below 1, but effects can raise the Pendulum Scale to any number above 10 (e.g. "Yosenju Shinchu R", "Performapal Guitartle").

Trivia[edit]

  • Early Legal Pendulum Monsters with very high or very low Pendulum Scales usually had negative Pendulum Effects that reduced their ability to be used generically, though this has been relaxed over time.
    • Usually, the negative Pendulum Effects involved preventing the player from Pendulum Summoning monsters that do not have a particular property, and the additional condition that the effect cannot be negated.
  • Scale 4 effectively functions as the 'worst' Pendulum Scale, used as a balancing downside as it prevents players from Pendulum Summoning Level 4 monsters (arguably the most versatile Level) while also forcing them to Pendulum Summon only high-Level or low-Level monsters, greatly restricting the range of Levels that can be Pendulum Summon.
  • The pair of "Supreme King Gate Zero" and "Supreme King Gate Infinity" were the respectively first Scale 0 and 13 cards to be released.
